Uhhhh, you do realize that video chat has been available on most phones for about....ohh, I don't know... 6, maybe 7 years???

What competitors never seem to understand is that it's not a matter of having a checklist item, but rather it's a matter of doing it well. I'll bet those video chats on a phone 6 years ago were just wonderful...

Apple appears to be committed to AT&T exclusively for the long haul so I expect Android will take a large and permanent lead over the next couple of years in the US anyhow. It is possible that Apple doesn't care though. They have never cared much about market share when it comes to computers.

Indeed, that is a good point about Apple. At the rate they are raking in the cash, they are happy with the market. So if eventually a splintered Android market overtakes iPhones in market share, all the Android fanboys will scream and shout "We win!" while Apple will sail along contentedly selling to people who want the most refined and user friendly experience.

The fanboys will continue to yell about "freedom," while the Apple users will enjoy the freedom of using the most refined and user friendly experience. The "freedom" boys will struggle with their interfaces, all while convinced it's the best UI ever, not noticing how much of it was copied from Apple because, hey, some researcher thought of it first in college twenty years ago and thus Apple is the copier!

It will never end. Mac user boards will be overrun by folks who want to lecture them about their stupid choices, while Apple users will quietly enjoy their lives.

I agree with most things but this. Apple users can be some of the most obnoxious of all, you think they're any better than Android users?? You just posted a long statement about how much better your phone is. Ever visited the comments section of engadget or gizmodo?

I Don't consider myself obnoxious however im 30 years old and im not going to take a lecture from someone about products that i choose to spend my money on.

People who hate apple tend to be obnoxious because they make it their mission to attempt to "Convert" people like myself. But lest we forget that people are just as passionate if not more about Sports ( See Green bay Packers) for example, Cars (BMW's,Prius's,Honda Civics,Mustangs,Scions), Politics,Video Games Consoles,Comic books, ETC.

Apple Didn't invent the term Fanboy. And it's normal to be a fan of things and what is percieved as "Ignorance" by people who hate apple on their attempt to get "Apple Fanboys" To convert over to their point of view. IS not ignorance. IT's the fact that most people like what they like and nothings gonna change it.

But i suppose it makes me chuckle knowing that me loving a product tends to drive people mad. What fools those mortals be!

For me, it's simply what I've seen. I have an app with Lite/Pro versions in both the AppStore and the Android Marketplace.

In the AppStore, my the lite version has been downloaded almost 2000 times. The pro version less but still a nice iPad sized chunk of change.

In the Android marketplace, the lite app has been about downloaded 1200 times. The pro version has been purchased exactly twice.

It's already been shown that iPhone users tend to spend a lot more on apps. Guess what that means for developers? ;)

And it's never been done right.

Cut and paste has been available for years. Then came Apple's implementation of it. ;)

Same deal with touchscreen technology. It takes Apple to fix everything and make things attractive and usable.

I know what you mean, but we're talking about two different things. Let me explain what I meant in greater detail. I said that Apple users will just go on quietly enjoying their lives. They do. They like their technology choice and most would never want to change they like it so much.

In fact, they like it so much, they want it to be better and they expect better. A driver of a clunker doesn't expect great service for his car, but oh man, you'd better believe the Porsche owner expects great things. The more you care about something, the more you whine and moan about the details. The beige box PC owner sticks the ugly box on the floor and tries not to look at it. The Apple owner polishes their machines because they look so good.

So yes, you see lots of whining online about Apple products. Part of that is you don't usually hear from the happy users, and part of it is because they love their products and want it to be perfect, and yes, part of it is because of the religious wars in place that cause some troublemakers to come here and whine and moan about Apple products in an attempt to make Apple look bad.

But just try and get an Apple owner to switch to Windows and see how far you get. That's what I mean about Apple users enjoying their devices. They do, no matter how many trolls tell us we are making bad decisions. All that talk makes us do is wonder why trolls are so obsessed with bad-mouthing Apple.

So hang on, when a competitor, be they anyone, releases something new but Apple put a better finish on it afterwards , it's kudos Apple?

But when a competitor does something a bit better after Apple introduce it, it's sacrilege? ;)

As for Copy and Paste, Winmo 6.1 has a very similar way of C&P that the iPhone has, except with a stylus (you can do it with your pinky finger, though the input was never designed for it) but that 6.1 was released a full year before Apple's implementation of it.

Uh huh.

O RLY? So video chat has been available on most phones for 6 or 7 years?

Uh huh.

Apologies, I worded that awkwardly.

What I meant was that video conferencing was wide spread available, 6- 7 years ago. Even before the first Gen iPhone was released market penetration of video conferencing mobiles was on the rise. (I think the first phone I had with video conferencing was the old Nokia N97)

FWIW, a friend of my just got a Droid and was showing it off to me. I was really surprised how clunky it was, and how unresponsive the OS was. He'd swipe his icons to move between screens and the icons would stutter and lag. Bringing up apps usually took an inordinate amount of time. And the onscreen keyboard is nearly unusable. Now I know why so many manufacturers include a slide-out keyboard. Seeing Android in action made me appreciate my iPhone.

Funny you should bring this up. I've had a lot of respect for droid over the last few months, reading about it in tech blogs, the commercials etc... I was cruising through Wal-Mart yesterday and for the first time I actually picked one up and held it.... wow, IMHO, Apple is still five years ahead.

That's not usually how it goes though. A competitor introduces a new idea, but typically in a manner that is 1.0-type quality. Nice idea, not the best implementation. Apple comes along and rethinks the issue and comes out with the same idea, but conceptually more elegantly. Yes, they deserve kudos. They didn't rip anyone off, for you cannot control concepts, only implementations.

Now the competitor sees what Apple did, realizes it is a more elegant solution, rips off the implementation, and that's when you see the sacrilege comments. If they could be creative and come up with an even more elegant solution than Apple's, but uniquely their own, you'd see the market praise them. Instead what typically happens is slavish copying of what Apple came up with. Not creative, possibly illegal.

The same idea but conceptually more elegant for Apple? But then when the competitor makes it even more elegant, its an illegal IP? Thats like saying Version 1, Version 2 is better, but Version 3 is not allowed to be better again? And I think I would be slightly more aggrieved if someone stole an idea rather then an ergonomic implementation.

And where do you draw the line with conceptually progressive and one that is simply successful? I mean, the Prada LG was the worlds first fully touch screen mobile phone and has the same physical look and feel as the iPhone. Does that mean the iPhone ripped it off because it was not now completely and totally revolutionary? Of course not. Just as when the next gen of smart phones coming out are not ripping off the iPhone.

These companies (and I mean all of them) to some extent or other will follow each other and their implementations. I have no doubt that Apple have borrowed idea's from other organizations, and vice versa.

Do I care? No.

I love the last pages of every MacRUmors thread haha.

Anyway, this was expected, the Android army is gaining steam...the iPhone is limited in device numbers and carriers comparatively.

btw...whats with people forgetting that the HTC Evo already was shown with a front facing camera....sure it may not use "iChat" but i'd suspect Skype to be updating their android app.

You cannot patent an idea.

Hey, if competitors come up with more elegant concepts than Apple, more power to them. It does happen, but it's a problem because the hardware and software vendors are typically separate. More often than not, you get concepts that are not more elegant, and that's the problem. So they start to just copy Apple instead.

Look at the smart phone market pre-iPhone and one year post-iPhone. Before the iPhone they looked one way, and after the iPhone they started to look like iPhones. That's the copying that annoys people. They need to be more creative.

The new Win 7 mobile software is a good example of doing the right thing. I think there are some awful choices Microsoft made, but at least they had their own ideas for once.

Android has some excellent features, and I like the fact that it exists because there needs to be a market for free and open.

But more often than not, it's Apple with the elegantly unique ways of doing things, and the competitors with a checklist of items that sorta work together.

Android is "poor man's iPhone"

Android is a just a passing phase for poor people.

The world wants iTunes and the App Store, but not everyone can afford iPhone/ATT, but as newer generations are released and more iPhones into circulation, poor people will also be able to have iPhones with the help of sites like eBay and Craigslist... Eventually, there will be enough iPhones out there for everyone.

Seriously... what apps does Google have?
what songs does Google have? are there any? These people can't seems to find any.

The 1st Gen iPhone & iPod Touch 2% numbers pretty much discount this survey in my opinion.

You mean seriously, only 2% of people are STILL using those devices?

Laughable. Sorry. Next...

Clearly, Google fudged these numbers.

It's as if Google wanted to clearly make the point that the original iPhone is just passe now! LOL

(Just because the takeover of Admob has not been approved does not mean Google is not exerting control over the company or decisions aren't being made in their favor, DUH!)

i wonder what people are saying in an alternate universe where Android is called Apple iPhone OS3 and OS3 is called Google Android... and i wonder if the alternate version of me is asking this exact same question...
