Feels like she's making a lot of mistakes since taking over. The watch online only at launch, macbook online only at launch, no lines outside stores that many fans enjoy for new products, delayed back to school program etc

Feel like she's making mistakes because she's changing a couple of very specific things (which clearly would have to be approved by Tim anyway)? Perhaps you can apply for the job then.

She sends weekly videos to the apple store employees?
If I was working at the store I'd find that really odd/patronising.
Doesn't seem very 'Apple like'

Pretty sure I read about the same thing happening under Browett's disastrous reign, so it's not something she brought in.

As for the promotion, they seem to have cut back on free stuff, such as the 12 days of christmas, since people got all moany about the free U2 album. Maybe coincidence, maybe connected, who knows?

So doing things in any way other than the way it's always been done is a mistake?
Mistake is your arrival at such conclusion. @Quu didn't say that "any other way" of doing things is a mistake, he mentioned exactly things he believes are mistakes.

Oh lord. People are being "forced" to do something by being given something for free? Christ.

You've totally missed the point. If Apple is going to do any kind of promotion, the "prize" has to be something that everyone deems valuable for themselves. I would argue that not everyone sees value in free music streaming, but everyone could easily recognize the value of a gift card to the AppStore.

Lol, likely nobody can explain these things to you.
If you're dense enough to think that initial orders of Apple Watch was limited to online only because of a decision she made and NOT because of scarcity, then I doubt any amount of words could convince you of the intellect behind this hire.

Wait, so why wasn't it a choice that Apple restricted the ability to purchase the watch to online only? Were no watches made at all? Are you saying she wasn't involved in the decision making that led the product being only available online? Do you think all of the little watches just refused to be shipped to the retail store?

I'm sure many of you are thinking also 'but is there anything else for Back to School'? Well, I need you to wait until next week's video and I'll share a little bit more insight with you then.

Anything else? Else?

I'm thinking this is a positive remark, but let's get on with the announcement.

I always thought Browett got paid a load of money for doing nothing, looking at the companies he worked for, it still makes me laugh that Apple thought he could be any good... ( he used to work for Tesco, ffs

She was more than likely behind it. But, remember, if there's demand there's gonna be supply... just because supply is "limited" doesn't mean they can't make more.

She is doing basically the same, except she is better dressed. Delivering the image to those image driven Chinese... Burberry and stuff, you know...

I don't care as long as it's announced in the next week and a few days. I went ahead and bought my iPad Mini and resigned to my fate of only $20 off. I was slightly encouraged when I saw the article title, yet now I'm discouraged having read the actual contents.

As we noted earlier this week, Apple has yet to launch its annual "Back to School" promotion that in recent years has launched in early July and offered educational customers free $50-$100 Apple Store or iTunes/App Store gift cards with the purchase of a Mac or iOS device, in addition to the usual educational discount available on some products.

With the usual timeframe having come and gone and no signs of an imminent launch for the promotion, many have speculated Apple has decided to end the long-running program.

According to Consomac.fr [Google Translation], however, Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts in her latest video message to store employees this week revealed that she will "share a little bit more insight" on the Back to School situation with them in next week's video.Ahrendts' comment does not confirm that the usual Back to School promotion will be launching in the near future, but the report notes her "enthusiastic tone" suggests the company will be offering something for customers.

Ahrendts is in Tokyo this week and recorded her weekly message from there, but the reason for her trip is unknown.

No, the way it went was supply. Your really reaching if you think otherwise. The retail rollout had to be adjusted. Not only that. The very type of product it was (and number of choices), in which she had nothing to say at all (the gold watch existed way before she came in) also limited the way this product could be rolled out.

It's the middle of the summer. Not close to the start of the school semester. Maybe she wanted to delay the program a bit so it tied in more with actual back to school shopping? Or maybe they are working on something better than years' past and it took a little longer? I am going to give her and the retail folks some slack before declaring they've screwed up or it was a mistake to hire her or anything.

Apple went out and spent a ton of money to hire her. Obviously her background and her interviews convinced them she was the right person to take the retail division of the company and move it forward. Like someone else said, it's about the customer experience. Me? I just want to buy what I need to buy and get the hell out of the store. But there are plenty of people who enjoy lining up, waiting around, and standing around in there playing on computers, phones, and tablets. I wouldn't dissuade any of them from doing what they enjoy.

AA came from high end retail where it is all about the customer experience. Obviously the buck stops at Tim and the board, but she has plenty of decision making ability. Launching the watch the way they did was a cross-functional decision.

"This year, we have a revolutionary system for school children getting the educational tools they need. All back-to-school products will be available exclusively through three exclusive boutiques around the world. One in Paris, one in Rodeo Drive, and one location in Subsaharan Africa accessible only by Rhinoceros."

Pre-announce translation: "We have been so busy trying to handle the Apple Watch sales drop, everything else has been neglected. We even had an intern handle the iPod Touch launch this summer."

I think the online-only launches of the Watch and MacBook were mostly functions of low supply, which isn't her fault.

There is away to transition from one marketing success to another. Keeping the old ways is not a good long term solution. The key is moving the process forward. Not an easy task. Apple to this point receives a failing grade. Maybe a change in staff or corporate direction. Either way Apple needs a better transition strategy.
