Oh no a company raising their prices. If only we printed more money and handed that out to people who don’t work, then I’m sure prices wouldn’t go up. I mean it’s not like we’ve experienced 200% inflation over the last 4 years. In this case the company will most likely sell less, which means they will either be ok that or lower prices to sell more products.

So be it. Cheap stuff from China is made cheaply because it's either garbage or is done by utilizing near or actual slave labor. These sorts of things will work out and eventually find balance and I'm glad to pay more if it means we can be rid of the drop shippers, knock offs, and other garbage.
You are aware that Apple products are made in China? Please buy American made phones and computers and leave this forum. Thank you.

Is America winning yet?

Hold on, let me go on Amazon to find an American-made iPhone accessory similar to Anker…

Oh wait, there are none.

That’s why the tariffs are stupid. We don’t even have a competitor to prop up!

I'm not going to get into whether Trump's tariff strategy is stupid (it seems poorly thought out to me so far), but the fact that China is the manufacturing hub of the world is because of the way they applied tariffs and barriers, including technology trade agreements.

Good move. It IS stupid.

but the fact that China is the manufacturing hub of the world is because of the way they applied tariffs and barriers, including technology trade agreements.

Has nothing to do with labor costs, favorable business environment, and large skilled workforce? China is no 'saint' but to suggest the current tariff situation has any similarities to the past is ludicrous and definitely puts you in the minority of economists.

My experience with Anker products has been good. My seven-year-old USB hub and an iPhone charger have never given me a lick of trouble. If there is another Chinese brand that enjoys a better reputation, please post its name as I feel certain we'd all like to know about it. Thx.
Or indeed, any brand that makes equivalent products....

Wait until you need a washing machine or a TV or refrigerator etc.
There's always Samsung and LG. Korea got a 90 day reprieve. Hurry!

Would we have been better off kicking that can further down the road?
Why is a bull in a china shop the only alternative to kicking the can down the road?

While greed is likely a factor, don't forget that in the US there is 1 year warranty vs. 2 years in the EU and the UK.
Guarantee, not warranty. One is not like the other. It's six years in the UK (except for Scotland, 5 years). In practice, you get usually get a one year manufacturer's warranty to go along with your sales guarantee. If you want longer, you have to pay for an extended warranty. 2 years is the minimum sales guarantee in the EU, although individual members can set more favourable consumer guarantee periods. It has been 5/6 years in the UK since 1979.

Economists generally agree that China has and still is significantly subsidizing its manufacturing sector though. While this means cheap products available for exports, it also arguably means unfair competition for manufacturers in other countries.

Trump is not entirely wrong in imposing tariffs against China as there are reasons to support that decision. The issue is him imposing at the same time tariffs against the whole World without regards for the reasons of a trade deficit (which is not always a consequence of unfair competition), not to mention the magnitude of those tariffs being far beyond what was expected.

Just don’t buy anything just wait for whatever sale. Amazon is gonna have next and they’ll be back down to the normal prices.

It's definitely stupid.

Do people not realize that the US is #2 in manufacturing in the world? The US also has a trade surplus in services with most countries. The reality is, it doesn't make sense to be in low margin manufacturing like $3 t-shirts. Even the iPhone manufacturing is low margin for Foxconn (estimated ~$8/phone), because the margin comes from the work done here in the US (software and hardware design).

Trump's limited knowledge on how the US economy works is literally 40 years out of date. You know, he has managed to bring back measles though. Maybe he can bring back coal mining while he's at it since people love some black lung.

My beef is not political. If you’re doing a tariff, it’s to make it economically viable to produce things domestically. This is why it’s hard to buy a BYD electric vehicle in the US. But we don’t have a domestic electronics manufacturing market. Off the top of my head I’m struggling to remember the last big electronics manufacturing company we had here. I’d have to go back to a company like Gateway Computers making machines in South Dakota, but I don’t know if the materials were American made.
