Sorry Apple, but it is definitely a "NO" if touch ID is on the back. I've used Android phones that are like that and it is a pain.

I'm hoping that Apple is just trying to flood the market with false specs of different variations to keep people guessing right up to the official announcement.
the problem is this.. that's very likely not a 'fool the internet' model.

it's far too detailed on the inside and not just a rendering/schematic of the outside.. the former is weeks worth of work and the latter is hours worth.

this model, while maybe not being the one that's eventually released, has almost certainly made it through the design/manufacturing process to where an actual physical working prototype has been built.

the last time we saw renderings in which the internals were modeled as well as the outer shell, it turned out to be the actual iPhone 7 which was released to public.

iPhone 7 leaked rendering which turned out to be real.. notice internal details:

I'd love to see Tim Cook come out and show the fingerprint sensor working underneath a bezel-less display and say, "What? You didn't think we were going to put it on the back did you?"
I was just going to ask if there are any other phones on the market with Touch ID on the back and what user's experiences are with it. Thanks for posting.

If users are complacent enough to buy an iPhone with that back pregnant camera I can see them being ok with a rear sensor ID.

Apart from the phone not sitting on the table flat the camera bump has no affect, trying to locate the touch sensor on the rear of the phone every time you want to unlock or use Apple Pay will be a major pain in the arse

Apple suppliers have so far struggled to reliably produce heavily curved glass in mass quantities, so the company is more likely to ship the version with more subdued curves, the person added.
Xiaomi just released a phone with identical design, heavily curved glass... How it could do it but Apple can't?...
By the time Apple releases the new phone, it will look boring and unoriginal. Everyone beats Apple...

The power button.
thanks

it's real. Those same deniers who said apple wouldn't make an iphone with seams still bought the iphone.

Now it comes down to marketing. Apple will tell you we did so much research on the placement of Touch ID - it works even better! we call it Touch ID Plus! and you'll love it.

Then you're going to believe it and tell your friends that oh it works great! etc etc.

It's called drinking the Apple Koolaid man

If it's gonna be on the back from now on, which I really doubt, it's practically like removing it all together, because I'll be damned to use a multi-hundred dollar phone without a case for 2 years or more.

Calling it now. Here's my guess:

iPhone 7S/7S+ (2017) - TouchID on the back
iPhone Edition (2017) - TouchID on the front under the display

iPhone 8 (2018) - TouchID on the front under the display

This could be the wildcard indeed.
When i think of the earlier leaked evt screenshot photo and look at the dimensions, a 5.5 inch traditional screen would fit in there. The other thing that struck me with that leak: they made comparisons in dimensions with the iphone 7 plus.
So this could be the next 7s plus that has touchid on the back, smaller bezels and chins, alu unibody, antenne lines, dual camera' s, and a regular ips lcd screen.

Personally, I don't see an issue with a slightly taller iPhone. The button is useful and it would let them put in a slightly bigger battery.

I think the larger battery will certainly be a factor with a 5.8 OLED model. I would just be interested to see if we have a touch ID on the back of the iPhone, which would I agree a larger battery would be likely if this was the case.

Looks like crap
A well educated post. A sheet of paper with a drawing of what is supposed to be the back cover of an iPhone 8 from the inside looks like crap.

Fortunately, Apple will add a front case, fill it with electronics, battery and screen, hide the innards from you, and add a bit of paint on the outside as well. It will look lovely.

Touch ID on the back seems very unlikely... unless it's a second one so it's easy to use Apple Pay from either side. But for unlocking... I don't see it. It would be very awkward.

If they have to put the touch id on the back (which I hope they don't) they should embed it in the apple logo so it is hidden and cosmetically the phone would not look any different.

I would normally dismiss these rumours but boy... yet another alleged Touch ID on the back is really getting me worried. That would be a colossal design failure if Apple go this route. If Touch ID on the screen isn't possible yet, I'd much rather they waited until it was.
Here's a thought. Someone in the design team said "Maybe we should have Touch ID on the back". Everyone says "that's ugly and ergonomically horrible, but let's make sure and build a prototype". They build a prototype and everyone says "it's just as ugly and horrible as we thought.". So now what to do with the prototype? "Let's have a bit of fun and leak it..."

PS. I always get some cheap, transparent gel case for my phones, so the back is protected, and the screen is a bit protected because these gel covers go about 1mm above the screen. That wouldn't work well with TouchID on the back.

It's called disinformation people :p Keep the rumor mills focused on something else so they don't see the actual product coming until it's launched.

I'm betting this is the design of the 7s, and the "Edition" will be the phone getting the fancier stainless steel/glass design with virtually no bezels.

People seem to have forgotten that the fancy "Edition" is supposed to be a new premium tier, and not the successor to the 7

That phone still has a chin and forehead
