We're so far past the point of diminishing returns with smartphones that, for the first time, I'm completely uninterested in upgrading. A slightly faster processor? It's not like any of us have been tapping our feet, waiting for our phone to solve some complex mathematical equation. A new camera? Great, but each successive generation is just an incremental improvement over the last — and none of them can truly replace a decent MILC or DSLR. Further, it's not like the screen sizes can get a whole lot bigger without completely compromising pocketability. Maybe they could improve battery life, but I don't really have any issues getting through a day with plenty of juice to spare now. While I would never buy another Android phone (been burned twice by that impulse), I at least give props to Samsung for aiming for something truly different with the Galaxy Fold, premature though that effort may have been.
Honestly, Apple should just skip releasing a phone for a year or two and come up with something genuinely revolutionary, instead of just slapping more lenses and a faster processor on the existing model. Maybe I'm wrong and there WILL be something truly amazing inside the next iPhone. But I'm skeptical. And the sad thing is, all they'd really have to do to convince me to upgrade would be to ditch the lightning cable for USB-C.
