Why not just make the whole phone that thick at this point? You would have more room for a larger battery, or Apple could buy Light and make 26 camera phone that emulates zoom, macro, and shallow DOF. It would cost a fortune, but iPhones were never cheap.

Honestly, Apple should just skip releasing a phone for a year or two and come up with something genuinely revolutionary, instead of just slapping more lenses and a faster processor on the existing model. Maybe I'm wrong and there WILL be something truly amazing inside the next iPhone. But I'm skeptical. And the sad thing is, all they'd really have to do to convince me to upgrade would be to ditch the lightning cable for USB-C.

Yeah, their shareholder probably wouldn't be cool with them skipping billions of dollars of revenue just because some people aren't impressed.

Just four months ahead of September, when Apple typically unveils new iPhones, leaks and rumors are starting to surface fast and frequently.

Render of 2019 iPhone with triple-lens rear camera via OnLeaks

The latest comes courtesy of Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who tweeted a photo of alleged case molds for a trio of upcoming iPhones over the weekend. If accurate, the molds suggest that all three 2019 models will feature a large square camera bump, as seen in many leaks to date.

iPhone molds like these are typically created based on design specifications and dimensions that leak out of the factories of Apple manufacturing partners such as Foxconn, allowing third-party accessory makers to prepare properly-fitting cases ahead of time, but they are not always accurate.

The rumored design of the camera bump has proven quite controversial since it was first leaked by OnLeaks in January, with many criticizing the look of both the bump itself and the positioning of the camera lenses within the bump.

It is unclear why Apple would use the square bump for the next iPhone XR if rumors about it having a dual-lens rear camera are accurate, as the existing pill-shaped bump used on the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max would seem sufficient, but perhaps it is merely for consistency.

It's worth noting that the camera design might end up being not quite as polarizing as seen in renders, as rumors suggest that Apple plans to apply a special black coating on some of the lenses that could help them blend into the bezel.

Last week, Gurman said the third camera on the next iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be an ultra-wide-angle lens that enables a broader range of zoom. The second lens on the next iPhone XR is expected to enable increased zoom as well. The new cameras are also expected to power new augmented reality capabilities.

I think we can fairly say that iPhones are now uglier than most Android flagships. So weird. iPhones are still made better and feel higher quality, but sweet baby jesus, what is going on? It's like Apple has done a complete 180 from it's glory days, where aesthetic design was as important as functionality. Today, quite clearly, it's form follows function with these ridiculous camera bumps and notched screen. On the positive side, I love Apple's commitment to privacy, and the upcoming return to best cellular modems. ...but, couldn't they do all this and at least not make a phone that's uglier than what most Android makers are doing?

This will tank sales more than any industry “experts” even see coming - watch.

People underestimate how many Apple fans only became Apple fans because of the incredible design.

Want to know who is buying those LG phones for a 13% marketshare? People who care about design.

Release that ugly, square camera bump and LG’s marketshare just went to 17%.

Sales will tank like never before seen or expected. Nobody wants that camera design and it will put off hundreds of thousands of upgraders, millions...instantly.

It will be heavily mocked and memed as well. It will be deemed uncool to have that iPhone.

This is really slowly becoming to be the beginning of the end for Apple, and almost nobody sees it coming. Pretty sad stuff

Customers aren’t still buying it. That’s why they had a 19% drop off in sales and it’s only the beginning.

It is POOR DESIGN. Apple is literally built - their entire reputation - on being a design leader. That’s what sells their image, that’s what helps move their ridiculous price points and profit margins.

They are taking away the appeal and “cool” societal factor of owning a well-designed piece of equipment.

That camera bump will be all over the meme Instagram accounts, Facebook pages, might even be mocked by Samsung in ads (wouldn’t surprise me).

Once the public opinion begins shifting from “cool” to “uncool” to own something, *YOU NEVER GET IT BACK*. This marketshare dip should not be taken lightly.

These words are so true.

Yeah, their shareholder probably wouldn't be cool with them skipping billions of dollars of revenue just because some people aren't impressed.
Apparently they feel like they have to follow popular opinion rather than lead by example as they used to, just look at their iPhone product line now. Rather than a single phone that's the best they can make, there's a small phone and a large phone...even a cheaper one that's right in the middle. Then there's even a budget one too. And if you don't like the new home-buttonless screen, you can still buy a newly made old iphone 8.

All of which to say is that you're quite right, Apple clearly isn't going to risk angering investors, even if it means changing everything.

Ultimately, you can’t blame them. People have to vote with their dollars. They complain about iPhones, and then... they buy the latest iPhone.

Imagine how much Apple could improve the iPhone by increasing the thickness of the phone to match the bump. Bigger battery, they could bring back the headphone jack alongside the sweet camera.

I struggle to think of a practical reason why this is a bad idea.

Not buying this POS design. Wow that's hideous. iPhone 6 camera is good enough for most idiots posting their narcissistic selfies to social media sites. Smartphone filters and simulations requiring sophisticated software and huge camera bumps are laughable to those of us who engage in real photography with real cameras. The best photography on Instagram isn't made with smartphones. The platform's entire raison d'être has been undermined with professional photo shoots using tens of thousands of dollars in real photographic equipment with a talented photographer behind the lens.

Yeah.
A talented photographer could take a great photo with a pinhole camera.
There goes most of your argument.
Agree, though, about the narcissistic selfies on any social media site.

its really not all that bad looking. i would hope for a more refined look when it actually appears but if it means better cameras, im ok with it.
Agreed. This looks to be basically double the size of the current camera bump, which to be honest or forgot how big it was before looking. If I didn't use a case on my iPhone this might be more annoying to me, but as it is, with a case the camera bump is flush with the case so I never notice it. And like you say, if it means a better camera/photos, bring it on.

I highly doubt they’d leave XS/MAX available to purchase. Not with Tim Cook’s crooked strategies.
I see no reason why they wouldn’t continue selling the XS/Max at a discounted price.

At any rate, I wouldn’t be purchasing from Apple anyway. I was referring to the price drops that spread throughout private sale sites (such as the MR marketplace and Swappa) after a new phone is released.

I can appreciate people like a good camera, but when does a camera get beyond the point that it is already good enough for all but the few? Yeah, I think we are already there. Either Apple is building iPhones for the few now or there is nothing else they can think of to get people buying.

I guess that is where smartphones are now. Well, for Apple at least.

Personally I would like for Apple to lower the price of the phones. This would allow them to stay relevant, while selling a ton. Imagine XI starting at $699 and XI Max at $799. Wishful thinking, but they would sell at ton at the price.

Yeah exactly, because we all spend time looking at the camera any day, it’s the purpose of the device and the camera are forward facing... these are all silly shallow critiques by people that spends any day looking for everything they can use to criticize a company they obviously don’t like. I hope for them they will grow up and realize life is short and we should focus on what we love, like and want not wasting it repeating the same useless critique and corny nerd jokes.

Your living subject is looking at that X pill :p

Same was said about the X camera module. It was mocked for looking like a traffic light , now it's a non issue.
it's a "non issue" because people who don't like it just didn't buy it.

just like me with pregnant iPhone battery case.
