Just four months ahead of September, when Apple typically unveils new iPhones, leaks and rumors are starting to surface fast and frequently.

Render of 2019 iPhone with triple-lens rear camera via OnLeaks

The latest comes courtesy of Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who tweeted a photo of alleged case molds for a trio of upcoming iPhones over the weekend. If accurate, the molds suggest that all three 2019 models will feature a large square camera bump, as seen in many leaks to date.

iPhone molds like these are typically created based on design specifications and dimensions that leak out of the factories of Apple manufacturing partners such as Foxconn, allowing third-party accessory makers to prepare properly-fitting cases ahead of time, but they are not always accurate.

The rumored design of the camera bump has proven quite controversial since it was first leaked by OnLeaks in January, with many criticizing the look of both the bump itself and the positioning of the camera lenses within the bump.

It is unclear why Apple would use the square bump for the next iPhone XR if rumors about it having a dual-lens rear camera are accurate, as the existing pill-shaped bump used on the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max would seem sufficient, but perhaps it is merely for consistency.

It's worth noting that the camera design might end up being not quite as polarizing as seen in renders, as rumors suggest that Apple plans to apply a special black coating on some of the lenses that could help them blend into the bezel.

Last week, Gurman said the third camera on the next iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be an ultra-wide-angle lens that enables a broader range of zoom. The second lens on the next iPhone XR is expected to enable increased zoom as well. The new cameras are also expected to power new augmented reality capabilities.

GUYS!! Look

Its a possible mold for the 2024 iPhone STxrS - with the rumored 24 camera system!! Which we all know is going to be SO MUCH BETTER than the 2023 model with only 23 cameras...

can we PLEASE stop this....

Lets be honest... for all the designers out there... you have to admit this is a horrible design. Aesthetically speaking, Apple could have handled a triple camera format in a much better way. This design just looks lazy.

This will tank sales more than any industry “experts” even see coming - watch.

People underestimate how many Apple fans only became Apple fans because of the incredible design.

Want to know who is buying those LG phones for a 13% marketshare? People who care about design.

Release that ugly, square camera bump and LG’s marketshare just went to 17%.

Sales will tank like never before seen or expected. Nobody wants that camera design and it will put off hundreds of thousands of upgraders, millions...instantly.

It will be heavily mocked and memed as well. It will be deemed uncool to have that iPhone.

This is really slowly becoming to be the beginning of the end for Apple, and almost nobody sees it coming. Pretty sad stuff

Such silly "controversy." People said the same thing about the original camera bump, then about the dual-cam setup, and despite all the protestations about how Apple was doomed and it was time to sell their stock, consumers still bought it. Now people are complaining about something that, frankly, they never really look at and never will.

When you buy an iPhone you almost certainly also buy a case, and the case makes the whole camera set flush with the case, so you don't notice it. In fact, no one really cares, day to day, about the positioning of the multiple cameras. If you don't want the cameras, don't buy the phone. If you don't use instagram but see value in the rest of the package, then buy what works for you. Getting agitated over something so silly is ridiculous.

Customers aren’t still buying it. That’s why they had a 19% drop off in sales and it’s only the beginning.

It is POOR DESIGN. Apple is literally built - their entire reputation - on being a design leader. That’s what sells their image, that’s what helps move their ridiculous price points and profit margins.

They are taking away the appeal and “cool” societal factor of owning a well-designed piece of equipment.

That camera bump will be all over the meme Instagram accounts, Facebook pages, might even be mocked by Samsung in ads (wouldn’t surprise me).

Once the public opinion begins shifting from “cool” to “uncool” to own something, *YOU NEVER GET IT BACK*. This marketshare dip should not be taken lightly.

It's time to replace Jony Ive.
I'd place money if Jony had the final say he'd make a smooth black slab of glass with no ports, buttons, speaker holes, logos etc. But all the design team have to play with the marketing department who have to push upgrades and showroom bells and whistle to get the consumer to keep buying. They also have to compete with the competition and current trends. All this in a very small window of time in order to start testing and manufacturing.

It's not like Jony has carte blanche to design what he likes and Apple just makes it.

Also all camera bumps are fugly.

Honestly I would take an iPhone XI with no sensor housing and no camera protrusion. I dont think the cameras on my phone are important at all and face id doesnt seem like a system seller. Typing in a passcode is fine enough tbh
I would love it if Apple would let us spec our own iPhones even if it meant a month or two build time and increased price. Pick the storage you want, pick the battery size (which would dictate the body thickness), wireless charging or not (no for me, give me a 7000-series aluminum unibody), etc.

I might be the only one but I really like camera layout, it feels fresh. Here is hoping nobody copies this years apple design.

I know the same thing was said about the iPhone X and the notch...then suddenly almost every android oem cloned it.

The camera area of the XR looks better than the X any day

Yeah exactly, because we all spend time looking at the camera any day, it’s the purpose of the device and the camera are forward facing... these are all silly shallow critiques by people that spends any day looking for everything they can use to criticize a company they obviously don’t like. I hope for them they will grow up and realize life is short and we should focus on what we love, like and want not wasting it repeating the same useless critique and corny nerd jokes.

This will have just been released when my phone contract is up for renewal- and I get the option for a new handset. And I can say hands down this WILL NOT be it. Ugly, Ugly device.

It's not the bump, it's the phone that's gotten too thin. Apple crossed the line with the "and now it's ...% thinner" cult few models ago! Now even the new cases must be thicker to cover the higher bump, and also probably more expensive. As it's been said numerous times - make it thicker, ffs!
iPhone's cameras have always been the best, and I'm sure the 11th won't disappoint as well, but it's the designer that needs to go.

Same was said about the X camera module. It was mocked for looking like a traffic light , now it's a non issue.

I refuse to get any of the X models. If this is the future of iPhone I may have to turn to the dark side. I’ve been with iPhone since the beginning and upgraded every year until last. #updateThe8

Not buying this POS design. Wow that's hideous. iPhone 6 camera is good enough for most idiots posting their narcissistic selfies to social media sites. Smartphone filters and simulations requiring sophisticated software and huge camera bumps are laughable to those of us who engage in real photography with real cameras. The best photography on Instagram isn't made with smartphones. The platform's entire raison d'être has been undermined with professional photo shoots using tens of thousands of dollars in real photographic equipment with a talented photographer behind the lens.

Yeah, but what do you REALLY think?

Everyone comparing this to the bump on the iPhone 8/X etc. Whilst a nit annoying, they don't look straight up ugly and out of symmetry as this. I cannot believe this is actually even a candidate for a final design. Aesthetically this is just incredible unpleasing, if not downright hideous.

What’s a real camera? Can you post a link to your work?

Yeah, apparently we have a number of amateur industrial designers/engineers weighing in here. As most of these phones will end up in cases, to your point the camera will sit flush.

I cannot wait for this phone to come out so that the XS Max drops in price!

In all seriousness, I’ll reserve my judgment for September but it’s looking like it’ll be a lackluster update so far.
I highly doubt they’d leave XS/MAX available to purchase. Not with Tim Cook’s crooked strategies.
