I’ve seen maybe one or two galaxy notes in my day. Never once have I seen someone using the stylus.

Right. I’ll be a “fanboy”. You can keep your app drawer and useless settings for all your apps and customization. That’s about the only half interesting thing on an android.

I have not seen iPhones at all in my place that doesn't mean iphones are not popular or their features are useless. Our personal count has very little meaning when it comes to mobile market across big geography and regions

If the iphone get a pencil , it will be a wrong choice... Apple took years to say "better a phone you can use with only your finger .. "

A MacBook Pro can easily support multiple monitors; the 13” model supports two 4K, while the 15” supports two 5K or four 4K monitors. All at 60 Hz and billions of colors (30 bit).

True. You can use a MacBook in clamshell mode with multiple monitors.. But, you probably wouldn’t do large scale spreadsheet development while mobile in laptop mode with just the 13in or 15in screen. That’s just too cramped.

“Who wants a stylus?”
As always, it is out of context ;)
Steve's "Who wants a stylus?" comment was referring to a stylus as the only possible way to interact with the display, not as an optional input method.
Watch the clip again.

The context is 'who wants to have to use a stylus in order to operate a phone? You've got to get them out, put them away, you lose them - yeurgh. So we designed a phone you can use with your fingers'

An iPhone with Pencil support doesn't detract from Jobs' stance as it is not essential to operate the device.

Thank you!

Sometimes it's not about being first but offering the best experience. Newton was a POS that failed. Galaxy Note has been thriving with professionals and creators since 2011.
I like the look of the Note 9 and think Samsung are bringing some great things to the table and being more creative than Apple of late. I say that as a long time phone user and one that has no intention of moving away from iOS.

I have to say I see very few Note’s however in my industry and I’m a mechanical design engineer who works and meets with some very creative people. It’s very much an iPhone dominated industry for me and mostly iPhone 7’s and 7 Pluses.

I think the note has always been a niche product.

Everyone wins. You can use the pencil if you want to, if you don't then don't! No reason for anyone to complain.
Nope - everyone LOSES
Steve knew why pencil makes no sense.
Apple is very short on developers, as they have to shift everything in the future, so why spending precious developer ressources on a "dead on arrival" feature?

I even doubt the if the always bigger phones make really sense as the fonts get larger and larger.

I would be highly interested in a small pro phone in the size of the 4s which was perfect for many of us. Repairable and even wireless charging would have been possible with the glass back.

It’s never sold particularly well here either i do believe. I seem to remember one of the Notes not even being offered in Europe a couple of years ago but could be wrong there?

I see the odd one here and there but not around the office or at conferences.
Think it was the note 5 that never came to Europe. I do see them occasionally but not that often. Where I live it’s mostly iPhones though.

He was talking about controlling the interface for which you most definitely don't need a stylus. There are however some uses cases for a stylus (like drawing) or even to control the interface, but that's not the norm, but rather an exception.

Agree.
Remaining question: And will you enjoy drawing on the iPhone or on an iPad?
[doublepost=1534491910][/doublepost]This will be interesting:
So far, Apples wise decisions were made by courageous decision-makers: Pencil only for iPad Pro (because it's the only place where it's really fun to draw), and never for a small phone screen.
If competitors do not make this reasonable decision in order to generate arguments or unique selling points for marketing, this is not in the user's interest. He always has to pay for the hardware.

I hope Apple doesn't stupidly copy the absurd, marketing-driven decisions of other companies.

People that want a stylus must realize they are already available. Apple is not going to add Apple Pencil support to iPhones. Just not worth the manufacturing cost, doesn’t make device thinner, or in-line with recent Apple design philosophy... and definitely will not have an internal slot like the Note.

Personally, I never understood the appeal of scribbling handwritten notes into a digital device. I remember one of those Samsung ads where the “savvy” Samsung user digs out the stylus to write down someone’s phone number while the iPhone user simply typed in the new contact and just had to tap contact to call/message.

The ones available are not very good.

For me I’d want the stylus mainly for marking up screen shots, colouring on the go and quick photo editing.

Came here to say that I'm seriously bothered by the lack of a shadow underneath the finger. Sloppy Photoshop work.

I think the scale is really funky too. That phone must be closer in size to an iPad compared to the hand.

I have no interest in the pencil working on the phone... unless it can be kept inside the phone like the Samsung Note.

Even then, I don’t care for a pencil. Give mouse support on iPad!
There would be plenty of 3rd party case manufacturers who would build a pen/pencil stylus holder right into the case.

Apple makes an accessory called the the Apple Pencil. Why shouldn’t they make it compatible with as many products as possible in order to increase the utility of the accessory.

OK, now make the Apple Watch 4 so that it can pair with the iPad Pro.

It will if there apps that need a stylus to work properly.

As a main input?
Nobody

Before iPhone, the devices used stylus for typing. Glad that time is behind us

As for doodling and casual notes, I would like a stylus
Before iPhone the devices (like 98% of them) used physical keys for typing.
The devices you are referring was the exception and not the rule.

Sure, but they were mostly not touch screen.
The lovely PDA, with touch screens, were always poked by stick

It's true. For sheer dicking around and drawing funny faces. Then surely the Apple Pencil will be a number one hit.. Especially for those who enjoy such 'skills'. And who doesn't know someone who is renowned for being "that dick with the funny face". So definitely a huge market base then. Sadly however no matter how many of such personage gravitate towards the 'doodle stick', just like the Bring and Buy sale at a nudist colony. Its not so much the buying that is the problem. But what you're going to bring it in. In other words. Where will you store the aforementioned 'scribbling novelty' when you're not using it to write your fast food order or add comments to the HDR of your cat? Maybe a piece of iVelcro on the back of the phone case? Fantastic. I've just discovered a nifty wee sideline to invest in there, readers!
