I feel like it’s inevitable. Maybe “Apple Pen” Lol.
I propose that the current Apple Pencil be renamed Apple Pen. It has no eraser, so it's a pen!
I have no interest in the pencil working on the phone... unless it can be kept inside the phone like the Samsung Note.
Even then, I don’t care for a pencil. Give mouse support on iPad!
I too would prefer internal storage for the pencil/pen device. Hey, maybe they could use the space they saved from getting rid of the headphone jack!
Buy a samsung then. Hang out on forums dedicated to samsung. I have now solved your problem. You're welcome.
It's not fair and it's not right to chase somebody away just because they're not a
current user. We shouldn't do that, even if it DOES feel that they're a troll (which I didn't think is the case here; just saying).
And that leads me to this: I've noticed in this thread a lot of people are just dissing each other for not agreeing. And that thing several people said, "Apple people laughed hard when..." "Samsung people made fun of..."
My God, stop that, people! This tribalism is dumb. I hope for great products from BOTH Apple and Samsung, and from other makers too. So should you.

There is no way that the pencil would be kept inside the phone. Just no way, even though I would like it that way. It's just opposite of Apple's design philosophy. On the other hand, they might make a case that would hold a (new, smaller) pencil, and third parties certainly would.
Actually, the Airpods are stored in their case, which doubles as an auxiliary battery. Storing the Apple Pencil inside of the device would allow for the possibility that the pencil could be charged by the main battery of the device, WITHOUT requiring that the pencil be plugged into the Lightning Port.
I have an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil. I don't like having to plug the pencil into the Lightning port...always afraid I'll snap it off or break the port.
The main challenge, I would think, would be making room for the inductive charging components inside of the phone or iPad, and reducing the girth of the pencil so that it isn't thicker than the device it would have to slide into.
