I'm happy. Wife gets a 3 month old iPad 3, and I get an upgrade. Just need to figure out what to do with her iPad 1. Maybe have her use it as an alarm clock. :D

I'm all for technological advances and improvements to products. I fully expected them to update the iPad. Just not so soon. I do feel a little duped. One of the things that drew me away from Android toward Apple was their typical one-year lifecycle. As a consumer, it actually makes you feel like you're getting your moneys worth out of a piece of technology (for once). ...and we all know Apple sure does squeeze the money out of you for their products.

It's almost a strategic advantage in my opinion. You want bleeding edge, new gadgets every 2 weeks with as much flexibility as a 16-year-old russian contortionist? Buy an Android device. I like a lot of aspects of Android but ultimately, I chose an Apple phone and an Apple tablet as our family devices. If they keep up the trend, I might as well go back to Android.

I don't think this will be a trend at all. I think they wanted to get the Mini out before Christmas, wanted to get the new lightning connector into the iPad 3, and it worked well to do it at the same time. This will likely be the new timing for the iPad event each year. It makes sense to have it before the holidays. I really think this was just a fluke...a readjustment of the schedule. I wouldn't expect another update in the Spring.

Say you break your ipad 3 with applecare in a few months and you pay $50 for the replacement, do you think they would give you the ipad 4 or the ipad 3?

I bet this did this to phase out the 30-pin dock connector completely from their lineup. Now I think all the iDevices (except the iPod shuffle) use the Lightning connector.

im a little annoyed about the 4th gen ipad 4. As I have the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 so I know how much faster it is. but the other thing the iPhone 5 has done is make my iPad 3 seem like a bag of cement. so im going to wait for the 5th gen because it will be a completely new design, lighter, thinner and probably quad core a6. so for once im going to wait. I am going to snatch up an ipad mini for my aunt for christmas tho.

My iPad 3 was lovely to use this morning before the event & it's still just as lovely after the event. Apple changing their cycle to release new products just prior to the holiday shopping season makes good business sense.

how does a complete processor jump make it a partial model upgrade?

Um, isn't that was the iPhone 4S was? New CPU + Siri. The iPad 4 is a minor upgrade and is more like an "S" version of an iPhone upgrade. The new CPU is faster, yes. But in most day to day usage, that won't really make a difference. The iPad 3 is already incredibly fast. The only thing I can see benefiting greatly from the A6X are graphics intensive games such as Real Racing 3, Infinity Blade Dungeons, etc.

I'm a little pissed that they've refreshed a product so soon. It really sucks for the early adopters, but that's the price we pay. This is just a marketing strategy. The iPad Mini was just announced. It's a new product in a slightly different market. That's what the spotlight was on. The iPad 3 would have taken a back burner spot and probably have under performed this holiday season. Now that it's the iPad 4 with some new specs, it puts it back in the spotlight with it's little brother.

This makes a lot of sense, but what people aren't thinking about is this...

With the iPhone/iPod/iPad release schedules now seemingly all in the fall, isn't it going to be a LONG time between iOS-device releases? Sure, you're gonna get a deluge of new iOS devices every September-October-November, but man, that's a long time to be off-the-map if you're Apple.

I know their typical update cycles have been a year apart, but now ALL iOS devices are in the fall, so there's nothing to take up the other 9-11 months of the year. I don't use Macs, so those announcements don't excite me.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I'm sure you're right. It just takes Apple down a notch in my book. Not solely from an "I'm pissed cause I bought an iPad 3 and was one-upped within 6 months" perspective.

Going into today, I have bought (launch day) an iPad 3 and also didn't really see the appeal of the iPad mini.

Apple did two things today:

Introduced a lackluster "we need to use up these spare iPad 2 parts so let's come out with an iPad mini" device charging way more than the competition which is somewhat a slap in the face to anyone who knows... a half-assed iPad mini in my opinion.

Made obsolete (for lack of a better term) the iPad 3 and it's now old-tech internals.

Honestly, it's been said a million times just joking but I really do wonder what Steve Jobs would have said about all of this.

Interesting point.

You would think that if they want the average consumer to purchase more than one iOS device for themselves, that they would stagger the introductions. I can afford a new $400 iPhone in the fall. I can probably afford a new $500 iPad in the spring... but I CAN'T justify a $900 "toy" expenditure all at once...

I would think this would drive people to only owning one iOS device... or at least waiting more time in between buying them. Seems like Marketing 101

So sell it straight away and you will get most of the money back.

I'm trying right now.

I posted it on my local forums minute the keynote ended.

The prices are being pushed to incredibly low.

I just got offered SGD$650 for my Mint condition iPad 3 32GB Cellular version which I bought for SGD$958 in March.

Tempted to just flog my iPad and get a Microsoft Surface. Apple lost a ton of respect from me today.

So is your iPad 3 worthless.. of course not.

I can't believe the amount of complaints this is getting. Sure, the camera is better, the processor is better and it has the new port but surely your iPad 3 isn't outdated that much.

Literally yes.

It is worth less.
though it is not worth zero.

Resale values will fall a bit.

As an iPad 3 owner, I'm fine with the update. There are no killer features that compel me to upgrade. In fact, I'm happy that Apple is revving up their release cycle rates. Makes it easier to get good technology sooner...

This, Knocked £100-£200 off the value of my iPad in one foul swoop.

In the UK at least, resale of Apple products is a major thing, you can sell for large amount of the value as long as you sell quickly before or just after an announcement, now we either have to upgrade now 5 months early or loose £100-£200 further down the line.

you know what would suck even more if this was like an iPad "3.5" and in the spring is when they release the real iPad "4"

Riots from ipad 3.5 and 3 users at the apple store would happen :D

Why would they keep the iPad 2 over the iPad 3 (new) iPad? Price point is the only reason that I can think of right now.

In all seriousness your iPad works just as well as it did last night. It is not obsolete. When you bought it, you could expect it would work for several years, get iOS updates for a few years, and work with all apps made for the next few years.

I think you all you whiners should form a group called "Citizens Against Technological Advance". You can argue about how much slower Apple should be. Maybe 2 years between updates? 5 years? 20?

I agree with everyone that is annoyed, 6m is too short a time.

Clearly apple dont think the ipad 3 is good enough. So have fast tracked a replacement. They must have known when the 3 was released it wasnt up to scratch. Thats lame.

I bought an ipad 3 for xmas for my wife, 2 weeks ago. Now i found out its been superseded by a better version, before i even give it to her? Thats lame.

So the ipad will be returned, and i will buy 2 nexus's. this was my 1st apple product and will be my last. I dont appreciate having the piss ripped out of me by companies.

cause this new iPad "4" is really an iPad 3.5.

when spring comes the real iPad "4" will be announced and you will hear the screams of terror in this iPad 4th gen owners.

hahah from the updates so far I wouldnt be surprised if this is really just an update for the iPad 3 rather than a completely new generation

I own practically everything apple from router to mouse. I bought my $900+ tablet thinking it will be the "best" for at least the next year. Apple announcing this new ipad just killed ipad 3 values, shows that the iPad 3 wasn't really that great of a gen if they scrapped it so quickly, if there were updates to the device this quickly they should've postponed ipad 3 until it was better, not screw loyal customers over by half assing a release and then tweaking It literally months later . It is what it is, if apple continues to be a company that's more interested in staying fresh over producing quality products that they back 100% I may just look to other alternatives like android that's so eagerly waiting to take my money and loyalty

i can just imagine the bitching and moaning people would be doing if Apple waited until next spring to announce a new full iPad. People are never satisfied. The best part of this is people upset about the resale value going down. Do people really expect to get a device, use it for 6 months and get a 90% return on it? You people are out of your damn minds.

In your opinion. Apple will sell millions of them. There's a huge market for a smaller iPad. The A5 chip will be fine for the smaller screen, and the resolution is close enough to retina for the people that are the most likely market for it. I don't understand why that would cause you to lose respect for Apple. Yes, they could have priced it lower, but its still going to sell like hotcakes. It's the perfect size for a child or someone who likes to do a lot of reading. Apple saw that it was a market they needed to get into, so they did. I don't understand why that takes them down a notch for you. Personally, I thought taking the discreet graphics out of the Mac Mini was much worse than what they did with either of the iPads. But we all have our own opinions.

As I've said...if they release stuff to slowly, everyone screams. If they release it too quickly, everyone screams. Yes, your iPad 3 lost a little value. It's still perfectly functional, just as it was a couple hours ago. You're upset because you want to have the newest item, not because what you have doesn't actually meet your needs.

People complain about Apple being greedy..Apple is a company, there to make money. And everyone that gets angry when their item is no longer the newest and "best" is greedy in a different way. It's mostly just for bragging rights, whether or not they like to admit it. Why does it matter if it was the best for 7 months or for 12 months? You've used it, enjoyed it and can continue to do so. It's just the way you're thinking about it that has changed.

So my iPad 3 that I purchased 4 months ago has already been super-seeded by the iPad 4.

Can't believe how pissed of I am that the update has come so quickly. I feel like selling my iPad and telling them to stick it up their arses!!

The faster processor and better front camera is ideal for the iPad 3 retina display. This is what the iPad 3 should of been!
