how do you not believe me, I posted a damn video showing it happen, What other proof do you need, even on my way to work I dropped a call in testing it again. I am getting a case to avoid this but it does happen

Why has Apple not been incline to fix this "issue", because as much as people complain about it, not many people seem to be as affected by the "issue" enough to get a refund and Apple has gone on to sell 30 Million+ iPhone 4's in the last 8 months. So to them, it is a non issue and not worth fixing.

Are some people affected, I believe it was made quite clear last summer that Yes, some are.

Is everyone affected, I believe it was made quite clear last summer that No, not everyone.

Are the affected people more vocal about this issue, I believe it was made quite clear last summer that Yes they are.

Also, if the Verizon stories are true about having record first day sales in just the first 2 hours (for existing customers only), and with possibly more records to be broken for the official launch on Thursday, I feel that this continues to be a non "issue" and people are happy enough to have an iPhone that they will just put up with it, case in point, the OP is just going to buy a case (not get a refund).

well put, I am the OP, and yes I will get a case for the iPhone which is part of the problem, because I am going to deal with it, Apple won't change it. Oh well, My wife is taking over this phone in a month anyway and then ill wait till June :)

This, of course, would be no excuse for them not to fix it by the time the iPhone 5 comes around.

Threads about preorders selling out, long lines, Android sucks, complaints about dropped calls, hatred toward carriers, and spawning both happy and unhappy new customers alike.

Oh wait, another iPhone for new buyers has recently been released. I can't wait when that white iPhone 4 gets released and more bitching and fanboyism start to happen. Same old crap, different day.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

it could be a location problem.

i would get dropped calls in certain areas in my apartment on my env touch. looks like im running into the same issue with my iphone :(

That's because of your network provider......you're in a crap network area buddy

Has NOTHING to do with the design of the antenna in the iPhone

Never had an issue with service with my iPhone 3G, so it's not completely the area I live in. It's the iPhone 4's stupid placement of the antenna gap.

Like I said, the iPhone 3G always had great service in the same area. I've been living here all my life. AT&T is the best carrier in my town.

I love Apple but I think you're ignoring their faults and defending them too much.

Even with the antenna problem though, the iPhone 4 is still the best phone you can get from any company (as far as I'm concerned).

So I don't hate it.

With the amount of force it takes to make my iPhone drop one bar, it would crush a Blackberry or other plastic phone. I don't think I'd be inclined to hold any other phone that way... Maybe it's just my phone, who knows. The way people describe it, it's like if my parakeet laid her little toe on the line, it would immediately go dead and drop all service. Not so.

I am trying everything but I cant reproduce it.

I am holding my phone in every orientation possible and it doesnt seem to loose any signal strength. Maybe I'm not holding it wrong enough but even when I cover the entire band using both hands I don't loose signal. Kicks the ****** out of my BlackBerry.

It depends on the strength of signal you have in the first place. I can make a low to fair signal strength go to nothing on the iPhone 4. I can't achieve the same result on any other phone I've tried, so it's definitely something wrong with the iP4 in that respect. Basically, by making the antenna external, Apple have exposed a really big weakness in the antenna design. I guess this is why it's called a design flaw or fault, because they made a concious decision to make the antenna external without noticing the massive effect that can have on the signal.

i'm gonna have to agree with the other poster.

i don't have the death grip issue here in Canada, on Rogers.

Just use a skin or a bumper... problem solved.

no crap but that doesn't fix the issue.

Picture buying a brand new Mercedes but the car wont work properly unless you cover the body with a car cover the whole time, Now it just looks like every other car.

Isn't one of the many reasons in buying the iPhone 4 because of how nice it looks, now we have to cover it up though in order to use it if you do not have excellent service everywhere I drive to

Oh, since you don't have an issue where you live, that means there's no issue. I see.

No other phone or iPhone has done this to me.

I've had 3 iPhone 4s already and each of them had the same issue.

My original iPhone and iPhone 3G did not have an issue with the antenna. They were slow as heck, but no reception problem.

Exactly. I'm not going to put a case on my phone. I have learned how to hold it "right" so it's not much of an issue anymore.

The iPhone 4 is the first phone I ever had to make an effort to remember how to hold it in order for it to work as it's intended. Just touching that black line will stop my 3G data from working at all.

I suggest just doing what I did and remember how to hold it. Stop and think to yourself "How would Steve Jobs hold this?".

I'd put a Bra on the front of my Mercedes, if I owned one. :apple:

I had my first dropped call ever on Verizon. When it happened, I was really confused because I didn't know what happened until I looked on my phone. I noticed that I had no bars when before I had at least 4. My phone also has the antenna issue. I can easily reproduce the problem. Thankfully though my case is going to arrive tomorrow so at least the antenna is going to be covered. I'm just a bit surprised that it actually happened to me. Oh well.. Doesn't stop me from using the phone.

Side note: I love the keyboard. It's better than the one on my Droid X even though it's smaller. I find it much easier to type on it and easy to type quickly. This post was typed out quickly and all on the phone. Hooray iPhone!

Some people experience antenna problems
Others don't

Just because someone DOES, does not mean everyone does and denies it
Just because someone DOESN'T, does not mean that nobody does and makes it up

Anyone who DOES experience problems has a few choices:

1. Use a bumper/case and see if that fixes the issue
2. Take it back to Apple for exchange to see if a new iPhone is better
3. Take it back to Apple and get a refund or sell it and get a different phone

What does not do anything to solve the problem is trying to convince everyone that does not have a problem that the problem exists, and calling them names because they don't agree

Nor does it help when those who do not have a problem try to convince someone with the problem that they really don't have a problem

Neither of these two options are productive

This! What we can all agree on is that we hope Apple fix the issue by the time the iPhone 5 comes along.

I have the problem when I'm further away from the city, but a company like Apple that prides itself on its reliability as a product, this isn't a good sign.

That said, should I have to carry my iPhone a certain way, or pay more money to get it to work more?

To say "oh just return the iPhone" is a BS answer to avoid the problem. It doesn't get rid of the issue, you just avoid it.

"You're not holding it right" is great because I think Jobs meant you're holding it left. J/k

On a side note. I think there is a fine line between where the power lies between the consumer and the provider. Some see the consumer as the powerholder, and if they pay for something, the provider must provide correctly. Some see the provider as doing a favor for us consumers and we must play by their rules.

There's no regulation that the antenna must be at the bottom.

It's just usually easier to meet the legal limits that way, when tested held up against the head phantom (dummy head).

With enough room in the phone, for instance, you can make the antenna more directional so that it always radiates away from the head. Then the antenna can be anywhere.

ah, thanks for correcting me. i remember there was some regulating regarding something, and i guess it was just regulation limits to your head.

fyi guys, I just activated my new iPhone, called my wife, held the phone in my left hand to my ear as I normally do with the Incredible, signal dropped down to 1 bar and dropped call, I "may" get a bumper or simply return it and wait to see if they fix this in June.... So disappointed in Apple

The Verizon version was an adaptation to the new network, not a redesign. Look for the solution to the bumper fix to come out in the iPhone 4Gs late summer.

Interesting point, and I've often thought this myself. I'm very much in the first camp. I hold the power as all the different companies are competing for my money, and it's ultimately my choice who gets it. I see this as a very European view.

I can't understand how anyone can follow the second mantra though. It seems absurd to me to be thankful to a manufacturer for a certain product. They should be thankful that we deem it good enough to spend our money on! I see this as an American view.

I am not trying to scare anyone, you people are unreal, I simply came on here to let people know the issue I was having so people are aware that were on the fence based on this specific issue.

OK, you did. Now leave.
