I can tell you guys without a doubt the two operating systems are quite comparative. There are nice touches on both that make you feel great to use them.

Google isn’t a hardware company. It’s nice I can grab an iPhone and load it up with google drive, google photos, google news, Allo, hangouts...etc etc... google doesn’t care because I’m the product, not the pixel they are selling.

I now have a really expensive jewel of a phone that runs just as smooth as my pixel and has all of the google goodies. However, if I wanted to, I could forego the jewel like build quality and grab a pixel 3 saving some money. It’s a good time to enjoy smartphones and have a pocket of cash to burn. The market is quite mature.

Well myself and wife NEVER have this problems on our Android phones.

But we're a Pixel / Nexus phone family for many years.

No force closes ever
No battery issues ever
No freeze ups ever
No screen issues ever
No lag or slow down ever

Maybe going back 5+ years ago stuff like that would happen, but never on anything like a Nexus 6P or Pixel 2 XL .

Can't speak for Samsung phones, haven't owned a Galaxy phone in a few years, not a big fan of TouchWiz.

I have used Samsung and Pixel, what you describe above for the Pixel was my experience with Samsung phones as well. I agree, 5 years ago that stuff would happen.

I recently traded in my Pixel 2 for an XS, tbh, I'm delighted, but as I have said before, both can do some things better or worse than the other. One bit I never mentioned is that (in my opinion) the Pixel looks a little dated in comparison (forehead and chin) but, I may have jumped the gun slightly as the Pixel 3 will probably rectify this.

You are telling old story stuck in past.
Seems like you never use a recent android phone for an extended period.

Android has built in mechanism to ensure apps dont go haywire.
Samsung (and many others) even have added software that check for rogue apps that consume battery and close them automatically.

In iPhone you have to manually disable apps from running in background. If not those apps keep consuming battery. So iPhone requires more maintenance.

It works for me.

Then don't go install rouge apps and blame the phone. At least the phone is intelligent enough to tell you what apps are problematic. If you install a rouge app on your xs max it will drain battery too. But you won't be so quick to say the iPhone is crap :p

For me once the phone notify me of rogue apps, i either see whether there are alternatives or I just put those apps into "Always Sleeping Apps". You didn't do that?

Your contradicting yourself. First you claim that it’s not happening and a thing of the past. Then admit it does happen to you but rationalize it by labeling it “rogue apps” and feebly attempt to justify it by saying but it happens on iOS as well.

It doesn’t.

I think the one hand operation+ gesture of the Samsung is so much more useful.
Firstly it is at left and right side which is much better when using phone one handed. (And you can have 12 different gestures - 6 gestures per side)

With it using my note9 one handed is no issue at all. You can never effectively use XS Max one handed.

Then you try desperately to move the goal post by showing and discussing a Samsung feature.

What’s the point of that in the context of this thread?

Very little.

That may very well be true but that is not what other pixel 2 owners are reporting. It’s a compromise due to qc issues regarding the pixel2.

Case in point.

My 2xl is the most smooth of my android phones but I can’t be bothered to use it just due to QC issues. Went through 8 in 4 months. I have so many 2xl boxes in my drawers LOL

It is contradictory only because you don't know what is happening or you just want to nitpick.

In earlier versions of android, the user has to find and prevent apps that run wild themselves. Newer versions android have built in mechanisms to prevent these apps that consume lots of battery. You will be informed of those apps. If you chose to keep those apps then just blame yourself.

And I didn't move any goalpost. Samsung phones are still android phone. You just being selective, maybe because you don't have anything to counter. :p

You just admitted to being contradictory.

Don’t really have to much to say after that.

So you realised you have just admitted that you don't know anything and being nitpicking :p

I will say this. If you have $600 to buy a brand new phone in 2018, the Oneplus 6 and upcoming 6T are impossible to beat. Dash charge is the best charging tech ever created. The op6 runs oxygen os, which is like stock android on steroids. If an iPhone performed like that for $600, people would be losing their minds. As it is, many people don’t trust Oneplus due to their sketchy history and lying on benchmarks. All that aside, for $600 you will not find a better brand new phone on android or iOS. A lot of android haters might change their tune after 14 days using a 6/6T. Then again, they might feel like google is spying on them and miss the features only iOS provides.

Let’s be clear here, Google IS spying on you. They give android away for a reason. Both iOS and Android work fine. iOS gets better dev support due to fragmentation issues, but that isn’t as much of an issue these days.

If you don’t care about privacy, and some don’t, then go with a OnePlus. If you do, then go with Apple.

Keep telling yourself that in your dream. All my iPhones I have owned, I have never once had a rogue app. So no, I don't need something to tell me I have one when it never happens in the first place. It happens too often on Android devices sadly. Every device I have owned that was Android has done this.

MKHD already said he had to stop using his Pixel XL 2 as it has become laggy. So again, it still happens.

You definitely move the goal post just to satisfy your agenda. Android still has the issue where iOS does not. Many complain on AndroidCentral about battery issues on the current flagships. They always ask, how can I get more battery life. You never see that on iOS.

I guess someone made the decision to axe you. Glad, we were getting tired of your one sided opinion.

Former S9+ owner here. I had the device earlier this year and felt it wasn't worth owning. The iteration was barely an upgrade over the Note 8 or S8+. The only real welcomed changes were stereo speakers, relocated FP sensor, 2gb extra RAM, and dual camera apertures. I thought the device was a severe disappointment though. Touch screen issues galore with tremendous bloat, gimmicky curved edges, and a very minimal update. Samsung did nothing to take advantage of project treble and still continues with its horrible update schedule. I felt the software was still the bad part of Samsung's past.

I used the iPhone 8+ as a stop gap between the S9+ and my iPhone XS Max. iOS 11 was crappy and created issues on the 8+, but I really dealt with that rather than owning an Android device that didn't feel worthy of my $. iOS 12 was a great update and I was set on the XR. However, I thought it over and decided to go with the XS Max on a BOGO deal w/ T-Mobile. It was a great decision.

I absolutely love the iPhone XS Max. The display is phenomenal. Battery is just as good as the iPhone 8+ to me. Camera is really superb too. Performance is probably the best on the market since the OS feels buttery smooth and reliable. Apple really managed to rework the device's optimization to make iOS reach fluidity we saw on much older iterations. The gold is a very nice color too. Price was a little high, but I get what I want in a phone: long term support, reliable software, top notch hardware (no pun intended), silky smooth performance, a renowned camera, etc.

Glad I made the switch and I am officially off the market from smartphones for at least 2-3 years.

Good post :) Yeah Lagwiz is still present and real. The U.S. carrier versions have insane bloat, and Samsung has too many copy duplicate Google apps for no reason. That's why for Android I think Pixel / OnePlus are truly the only phones to get.

The iPhone XS Max is a sweet super cool phone. I am sort of tempted almsot to get one, and I am on T-Mobile as well. hat specific deal did you go with ? I was in the T-mobile store downtown Chicago last night, girl there said it's a $400 down payment to get the Max, is that true ?

I did a $180 down payment for the XS Max myself. It depends on what type of qualified buyer you are when they run your credit. I went with the $700 off via bill credits special they have, but it requires two phones to be purchased on EIP.

Costco has a better deal, $1049 for the XS Max 64gb in any color plus $700 back on a prepaid MasterCard. Issue is that Costco doesn't have stock anywhere and their deal could expire soon. I went to Costco last Friday for launch and waited about 30 minutes in front of the store to see if they had it in stock. They took down info to call people, but they haven't even called since.

Idk why Samsung cannot be like Motorola and have features with performance go hand in hand? I love Samsung hardware and think some of their features are insanely good (Samsung Pay, smart alert, display resolution tuning, etc), but the cost to use the hardware isn't worth it in software.

I would only recommend a Pixel or OnePlus to people too. However, I cringe with OnePlus' software since they can be sending stuff back to China with backdoors or having exposed bootloaders out of the box. The 6T is going to be a popular Android purist phone.

As for the Pixel 3, the leaks really cemented my decision to stay on iOS. No dual camera with optical zoom is surprising. The design language is pretty bad and mixes old/new school ideas. Their quality control is non-existent either. How could you have a $700 Android device with 4gb RAM on the horizon? Then you have MKBHD say 4gb RAM isn't enough and causes lag regardless of Oreo or Pie. If they have a 6gb RAM model, that's the only one that has 2-3 years worth of usage in it.

If I am in the $700+ territory, I might as well go for an iPhone XR or better. I will end up paying $650 for my XS Max overall.

I had a Samsung s5 pair that I bought for my wife and I - it was our first smartphone purchase coming from a Motorola W385:eek: The Moto was a REALLY good phone in it's day, and I always liked the old Motorolas because they were the best RADIO device in the business. When the world moved from voice to "nobody answers their phones anymore" we finally decided to do a sort of "smartphone trial" and see how we liked those. And since I bought two new for $600 cash as the s6 was hitting the market - thus owning the hardware outright - I didn't have a ton of money invested, and I could let the "user experience" guide me as to whether it was a worthy version or not.

I'm no tech newbie (although let's not talk about coding, hehe) - I have been on broadband internet since 1998, and went through all of the windoze headaches back when that stuff (and viruses) were an unbelievable painindeazz, and I had a couple comps that had to go through some serious techwork to bring them back from virocalypse. So it's not like I can't learn to use any of these various platforms, windoze and droid being no exception, and that I haven't been through the wars - but android seems like bad marriages people talk about - lots of maintenance, and lots of arguing :)

I did OK with SamDroid. My wife - not so much. She had more unintended customizations than one could count, and we both found the interfaces (TouchCheezWhiz) to be tedious. My phone developed an issue where it wouldn't receive random texts, and after doing testing with my carrier determined it was a phone issue. This being six months after the last software update was issued for the phone - another reason I had to move on.

With an NYC holiday trip in the works and in need of a new phone, I took a leap of faith and bought an 8 Plus (as the X wasn't enough screen for me). Had the carrier's salespeople umbilical the old Sammy to the 8 Plus and transfer pics and contacts, did some basic setup (I had iTunes on the comp already so I added iCloud) and added a few key apps and password account setups and trials, and off to NYC I go, new phone with only a few hours prep on it.

That weekend blew up on me like a nuke. Ticket deals gone bad, ticket courier brings wrong tix, meetings getting missed from delayed flights - an absolute mess - where when I need that phone to WORK, it better.

That phone sold me over those four days. It bailed me out of so much stuff and completely changed the trajectory of the weekend. The fact that I was able to do what I did and never used an Apple product since the IIe it was plainly evident why people swear by this stuff.

With Apple the idea is "let me do this for you". With Android, it's more like "build the tools you like to do your work". "Customize Me." It's a different thing, and both have absolute merit. Hell, I held off buying Apple phones because they wouldn't make a BIG SCREEN. So I've had my issues with "things Apple left out" for a LONG time now. But the things they always did well - making things EASY for the user, is what I need out of a phone. When I'm on the road and the "s^&%$*()$ hits the fan, it's not just "who ya gonna call", it's whatcha gonna call with". At home, when I have time to deliberate, research, plan, set up, etc with respect to my personal affairs or anything I do on a comp or phone, I like the "tweakable" of the mainframe computer. I am investigating about what my next comp should be. I'm not sold it's Apple (although Win 10 makes me wanna try to make Apple work). But on a MOBILE device the Apple phone clearly sets itself apart for that user who appreciates the "let me do this for you" as opposed to "OK, you're gonna have to tweak me....."

With my wife NOT being technically inclined, it's a plus that she can have an Apple phone and I can too, and yet BOTH of us have it deliver what we need. I would rather have her stuff speaking the same language as mine, so if she has issues with anything I know well the language.

Soooooo....

With respect to the PHONE, I am rather pleased with the switch. That 8 month experiment with the 8 plus turned into a preorder for the Xs Max - the phone I have wanted Apple to build ever since I had time on that Samsung.

Reservations:

If I have a complaint on Apple, it's the MUSIC files. I don't like "proprietary" anything when it comes to music, books, and so forth. I like PAPER books and VINYL and CD and DVD so I actually OWN the physical copy. Not with ANY company who if an error is made my collection goes "bye-bye". I won't buy kindle or anything similar....I want it PERMANENT, PHYSICAL, and MINE. I don't have issue with streaming (Apple Music) or renting flicks through iTunes. I had iTunes just for those independent documentaries and such that weren't oft available other places, so I do stream movie rentals. But buying the files? No thanks.

If I were to have to go back to Android, it would be a Google Pixel most likely. In hindsight, I would have probably appreciated it more if I had bought a Nexus/Google phone back then. Didn't know better, just figured Samsung was a reputable manufacturer that had a foothold in the marketplace. No way would I buy one of those now.

.....and I got a $300 rebate-through-financing (interest free) offer from my carrier on my Xs Max, so I'm getting the phone for $950 - not too hard to take, and considering the Xr with a 256gb hard drive will be $899 (and even with incentive-to-be-named later doubt it's $300) the Xs Max seems an even better deal.

And OMG is it ever a beauuuuutiful beast. Mine's working really well (although some of them have had issues) and am every bit impressed with the phone overall. I think there's a slight edge in voice quality through the 8 Plus, although not extreme - but it just seems a little "fuller bodied"/rich in tone. The Max sounds better than the Samsung and others I've used, so it's not substantial.

Probably since that could be standard pricing for new accounts. Each account is different, so I would always say "we have it starting at X down, but I could check your account for you to see if we can offer you a lower rate" just to CYOA with that and avoid giving customers grief about paying a huge down payment.

Whew, that was a long long post. Glad you enjoy your iPhone. The S5 was the worst phone I have ever owned because of constant overheating, lag, flimsy water gasket covers, low RAM, terrible design, and crappy customer service. I went through about 10 of them trying to get a working phone.

If there was a phone that epitomizes Samsung's "Lagwhiz" and junky software, it was the S5.

I switched from a S9 to the iPhone X, and I bought it slightly used right after the XS was announced which saved a lot of money. In general it seems that sometimes Android has the edge over the iPhone and other times the iPhone has the edge.

The iPhone X combined with iOS 12 seems to be really solid and buttery smooth and an improvement from previous iPhones. My last iPhone was the iPhone 7 Plus and I like the X a lot better. My main gripe is that the static grid of icons gets boring and it seems like Apple has polished every aspect of their operating system except that lol. FaceID is a bit wonky at times but mostly works, ApplePay is a lot better, the widgets are more useful, raise and tap to wake are really useful, and it seems like Apple is back to the way it was...

It was around iOS 7 and the iPhone 6 that I really lost interest in Apple. It just seemed a bit sloppy and i did not like the design of the 6 and especially the plus model. That trend of sloppiness seemed to continue with iOS 11 being readily reported as buggy. I read that Apple made the decision to slow down and stop adding as many features, so I think that decision has paid off with the Iphone X and iOS 12. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the iPhone.

Yes i did from a note 8 and not all my songs or ringtones are downloaded onto my iphone. Does anyone know a mp3 player i can download on here to get my songs back again

Anyone else move from a high end Android phone to the iPhone XS Max ? What are your thoughts ?

Going from a Note 9 to the Max myself, the Max is much better imho. I may not have a spen that i rarely used anyways, but the build quality, battery life, eco system, imessage, facetime, picture quality, not picky wireless charging (charges no matter where I place it on the wireless charger where Samsungs is picky as heck even on their own chargers). The phone is fast, and the battery just lasts hours and hours more than my Note 9 ever did with the same usage. I owned all Notes except the first, and am a Note fan, just Samsungs software needs work for a 4000 mah battery, it should last way longer than it does. I also had Camera freeze up issues that Samsung still has not fixed and is a huge problem on Samsung Community.
