Are there any new phones competing to the iPhone? How about the new blackberry that Verizon has? Is that any good? I need some good offers as where there could be good phones since my plan is going to end by the end of the Spring...with Verizon.

Kind of a silly question. All one has to do is open up a newspaper or turn on the TV and see there is all kinds of competition to the i-phone. It all depends on what you want. Good is subjective. From my point of view, they are all good. The best one will do what you want and need for a reasonable cost.

I have looked at a lot of the other phones to help friends/family who wanted to stay with Verizon. In my opinion no other phone comes close to the iPhone "yet".

My daughter, son and his wife just switched to AT&T (from Verizon) to get the iPhone.

My busness partner and his wife just switched to AT&T (from Verizon) to get the iPhone.

My wife and I were with Verizon waiting for a WM Phone to come out but when I spent 1 hour with the iPhone I was convinced it was the phone for me. This was when it first came out and I had to pay the full price for 2 of them. Upgraded my 2G to the 3G. No regrets.

Everything goes back to OS, which right now iPhone is the clear front runner.

It doesn't matter who's making the phone or what kind of spec it has, it cannot go beyond what the OS is able to provide.

yah. a wonderful os that can't run more than one app at once (besides mail/mp3/etc whatever default apps that already run in the bg) because it has no memory handling and a phone that doesn't even have push notification to make up for it yet.

backgrounder for jailbroken iphones would be nice but most your backgrounded apps just close anyway due to lack of memory.

Has anyone else seen the new BB Curve 8900???? It looks really sweet!!! :D Way better than the current version and it's the thinnest full QWERTY keyboard BB. So ya I'd probably get that on TMobile and unlock it so I can use it on AT&T. Either that or a Moto Q. TBH the BB Bold looks a bit cheap with the faux leather back and plastic everywhere.

I'm happy with the iPhone and am really excited to see where its features and design improve in the future, but I am open to other devices. :)

I agree. I believe everything is top notch on the iPhone except for the OS. The iPhone OS is still a work in process and is missing many basic features (just exactly why is the iPhone the only premium cellphone on the market that isn't allowed to run background apps?). However, it's the Apps and the touchscreen's responsiveness that make the iPhone for what it is. Sure, Apple made the App Store, but App Store ≠ iPhone OS. Without the App Store and its developers, the iPhone OS is laughable and would have been dead in the water by now.

That said, I think the G1 (or next phone to come out running Android), BB Bold, and the Palm Pre are just as good right now. I would have went with the G1 if it wasn't for T Mobile. You can do a lot with that phone and it's ease of use is comparable to the iPhone. I can exactly comment on the BB Bold because I have never used it - but have heard nothing but great things. And of course, we're still all waiting for the Pre.

Oh Jeez. It gives me a little bit of hope that there is a chance of the Palm Pre to go to Verizon. But I don't know if it is worth waiting 3-4 months to see it go to other companies because my contract is up in May. I dont know if a phone works while you have no contract.

Hopefully you have registered online at vzw.com and are able to look at your account, to see when your new-every-two discounts are available. I believe starting Feb 15 they are being lowered, for new accounts, at least.

Spoken like someone who doesn't know much about OS's. I'll bite anyway:

What do you think mobile OSX has, that other mobile OS's do not, or cannot with a software library? And vice versa: what do others have that OSX could not?

They're all pretty equal as regards location APIs, 3D support, etc. They all have nice SDKs and IDEs. The main difference I see is, some others support more languages, but that's a company managerial decision, not an inherent limitation.

I think it's you who doesn't know anything about OSs. The iPhone apps can't read/write to a file system, they all have their own. Therefore you can't use ANY good productivity or Office apps on the phone. Also the iPhone can't multitask, so you have to close an app just to answer a call or send a text message.
You've obviously never used Android. Its a glass of water after being in iPhone hell.

the question is my friend...

what do you look for in a phone? I could name a few hundred phones that'd be good for you but I can't make it specific when you won't even tell us what you're looking for.

I think it's you who doesn't know anything about OSs.

Quite the contrary. I have been an embedded OS and app programmer for decades.

Agreed. My point was, the iPhone's OS is not any better than any other. As I said, it could be just as good as others, but is restricted by Apple's internal decisions.

Cheers.

After I read all the bad reviews about the Storm online when it first came out, I needed to see one in person and decide for myself. We went to Best Buy and the service rep started showing us how the Storm works, then true to form the Storm froze up. I told the rep the Storm was as bad in person as the online reviews had said, he just shook his head in agreement. I am sure recent firmware upgrades make the Storm function better now but we have since gotten our iPhones. So if they had released a phone that worked correctly from the start, then Verizon would still have our business. But after using our iPhones for several weeks I think we make the right choice.

While I am not happy with the pricing structure for smart phones and think texting should be included in the data plan, I do like AT&T's roll over minutes.

Android is awesome. Google seems to be giving people exactly what they want - and doing it very well. I love my iPhone, but I'm getting to the point where I really would like my phone to do just a little more. Maybe I'll be surprised by the next firmware.

Kdarling, I think TuffLoveJimmy was a little upset by your post because you were giving the iPhone's OS a bit too much credit.

I know. It's also a first, someone taking me for a mobile OSX lover ;)

But fair is fair. Many phone OS's have artificial restrictions. It's not the fault of the OS (I am an OS lover in general), but often of the management or carriers. Give it a few years (and especially Jobs stepping down as CEO), and perhaps the iPhone's will be set free.

I hope that an unlocked unsubsidized android phone comes out soon. That'd be a pretty sweet backup phone for my iPhone, who knows maybe it'd become my full time phone.

Rumors say that Dell will soon get into the smartphone business (I always liked their PDAs)... by offering user-customized devices for sale.

In other words, you get to decide the features and the OS, whether WM or Android.

Let's hope so!

Well, I have stated that I wanted qwerty board. You should read the entire thread. I have the EnV2 and the Voyager as my best/favorite options right now.

I tried typing texts on many phones with actual QWERTY keyboards. Voyager, Viewty, Insite, BlackJack, Q, etc. I tried typing on the iPhone soft keyboard, and I typed much faster. I'm not typing 100+ wpm or anything but fast enough to reply texts quicker than any other phone. Honestly, the only addition a QWERTY phone has is the added thickness. Real keyboards don't do squat and I prefer a soft keyboard over pea sized keys.

I'm perfectly fine with the iPhone "keyboard." I think it scares people at first, but you really get used to it. The only drawback of this type of keyboard is that it takes up so much screen real estate sometimes, especially in landscape. Sometimes you just have this centimeter sliver of screen where you can see what you are typing.

Totally agree. Sometimes I also find myself looking at maybe 1-2cm of screen space but it's just too brief to be of a big issue.

Yeah, it'll keep working. A carrier would never automatically cancel the contract, or so I believe. Only way to cancel is to call and give them a written request to cancel as confirmation, in the UK anyway.

Toshiba TG01

Hey Guys!!! There is another new contender for iPhone from Toshiba and claiming to be an "ikiller" . just launched recently , not seen/used though.
Here are the features mentioned on a website:-

Toshiba has also gone with a customized 3D UI to add a little pizzazz to the mix. The Mobile Internet Device is powered by a 1GHz mobile CPU. Aside from its extremely large display and a slim 9.9mm thick body, this GSM handset is quite well equipped too with features that include -

Internal GPS with A-GPS
Bluetooth 2.0
Wi-Fi
EDGE/GPRS and 3G with HSDPA support
512MB internal memory with up to 32GB for external via MicroSD cards
3.2 megapixel camera
Support for DivX video playback.
Internet Explorer Mobile 6 with full support for Flash and a virtual track pad for web navigation
Shake control for specific features as well as an accelerometer for screen rotation

Other than that the company and Qualcomm have claimed that the TG01 will actually be able to go for a whole day without recharging thanks to the CPU’s dynamic speed control.

The TG01 mobile will be available in two colors according to the images making the rounds - black and white. It’ll hit Europe later this year through exclusive operator deals. There’s no pricing mentioned yet so stay tuned.

Looks beautiful. Can I get one with Android loaded on it?
