Aside from a few apps (most of which aren't really doing anything on the iPhone that would make them impossible to implement on a different platform if the developer felt it would be worth porting it over to say Android or WebOS), the only thing I really need for an "iPhone-killer" to have is the ability to sync with my Address Book and iCal on my Mac. Perhaps I'm missing something, but that seems like something not available on anything other than the iPhone (I'm fully prepared to be told I'm an idiot for not realizing other phones can do this too, though :) ).

Naw, I don't think theres any competition for the iPhone atm. Other phones just don't have that attraction which the iPhone holds.

It depends what you want. The iPhone hits the consumer market rather well, however there are clearly flaws. I would suggest waiting perhaps for the Palm Pre, or the new ANdroid phones being released later this year.

Saw this article today, a bit late I know, and I agree mostly with what their saying...

http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/20200/

"Apple is widely expected to debut the next-gen iPhone approximately 4 months from now, in June; right when 1st-gen iPhone owners' contracts begin to lapse. So, the debatable statement that rivals are "getting closer" applies to an iPhone that will soon be 'killed' by the only company that can actually do it: Apple. The fact is, even now, none of these fake iPhones are really all that close. The ones that aren't likely infringing on Apple's patents have uni-touch or screwy, limited, often nonsensical multi-touch gestures, goofy designs, usually with antique physical keyboards, and all of them lack a real iPod and have no iTunes App Store access. Most of them are far from their release dates; they'll launch well after iPhone 3.0. Hastily-launched fake app stores with 13 - or even 1,300 - apps available just aren't in the same league. None of these iPhony makers is in the same universe when it comes to third-party accessories; just like iPod, Apple's iPhone boasts a diverse, thriving economy that's simply unmatched. Plus, many of theses iPhone also-rans offer crap support to Mac users, if they even support us at all. The iPhone remains multiple years ahead of woefully outclassed rivals."

Dont get the storm

I have several friends that have the iPhone...and I have two friends that have the storm. Compared to the iphone I would not get the storm. The storm lags too much, takes forever to switch screens or load a widget. I also dont like that it is a touch screen but the whole screen is a button so you still have to push it. Kinda of annoying and weird to get used to.

The Samsung Omnia is looking pretty appealing though and its cheaper than the iPhone. Right now its $99.99 with a new two year contract but its only $49.99 for your new every two.

I guess the Samsung and Palms are the biggest 'competition', but with all the apps and potential for updates that iphones have, it's hard to say they are really competition. I know most people go with iPhones for the apps; I know I did.

Missing Sync

Aside from a few apps (most of which aren't really doing anything on the iPhone that would make them impossible to implement on a different platform if the developer felt it would be worth porting it over to say Android or WebOS), the only thing I really need for an "iPhone-killer" to have is the ability to sync with my Address Book and iCal on my Mac. Perhaps I'm missing something, but that seems like something not available on anything other than the iPhone (I'm fully prepared to be told I'm an idiot for not realizing other phones can do this too, though :) ).

Check out the program Missing Sync. Its fairly inexpensive and allows you to sync with your Mac. Im still trying to figure out though if I can sync with my MobileMe account. I know it doesnt sync to mac mail, only entourage but Im not sure if I go that rout if it means that I have to use entourage on my mac as my default mail. Anyone know the answer to that? Im fond of mac mail.

Nokia provide a free iSync plugin to sync between Address Book and iCal.

No real competition as far as sales figures,

RIM's smartphone market share jumped to 47% of the US in 4Q08, while Apple dropped to 22%.

Even the poor Storm sold a million units in the same amount of time that the iPhone 3G sold 1.3 million units in the U.S.

and software depth.

Quantity of apps does not equal depth. The iPhone is also restricted by its paucity of programming languages.

let alone UI.

Any chump can make a simple icon grid, and allow just one user program at a time to run. However, other phone makers strive for much more capability.

This phone is suppose to be out in 2 months. Another reason I believe the iphone be upgraded soon.
