Toshiba are about to realease their "iPhone-killer", the TG01
I must say that it has some pretty impressive specs:

- 1 GHz processor
- It's 0.39 inches thick compared to the iPhone's 0.48
- 800-by-480 resolution. The iPhone’s screen has a resolution of 480-by-320
- The user can at all times change the micro SD to up to 32 GB.
- Flash-support

Otherwise it's comes with most of the same features: camera, gps, wifi, "accelorometer" - but bear in mind that it's a windows-based gadget, and we all know what that means.

It's probably less restricted, as most other devices are, but I bet the 3rd gen. iPhone will beat the heck out of it on all levels.

I hope that an unlocked unsubsidized android phone comes out soon. That'd be a pretty sweet backup phone for my iPhone, who knows maybe it'd become my full time phone.

Yeah that would be a great idea. I was hoping to get some kind of backup phone that is unlocked directly through the manufacturer so I don't have any trouble using it.

The G1 is better than the iPhone, not because the phone itself is perticually amazing but because of Android. As soon as it's available on pay as you go, I'm ditching my 3G and getting one of them instead.

Alternatively, I'll wait until any Android phone that's on pay as you go comes out and get one of them.

At least, everyone should read Intomobile every day. (There are tons of other mobile device sites, but that one's usually got the most interesting stuff for light reading.)

For example, I see that Samsung is coming out with the Acme, which can record and output HD video.

And there are other phones with very nice cameras and xenon flash (yay!).

There's a LOT of neat phones coming down the pipes. Just a matter of time.

Thanks for that link, looks like a cool site *adds it to bookmarks*

I agree totally with this. I DO love my iPhone 3G, but I definetly use my G1 alot more. I'm keeping my iPhone - hoping good stuff will get released.

+1

IntoMobile is on my daily check list. Great site updated all day long with a lot of new stuff and news.

;)

And I believe if that TG01 had Android.....woah boy, that would be a killer right there! Well.....that, and if it comes subsidized with a carrier contract. I don't believe a $6-800 unlocked smartphone is going to outsell the iPhone, whether it have a 1ghz or a 2ghz proc. with 100mp camera. :D

The thing is, the G1 and any Android phone for that matter will always be able to do things that the iPhone will never do because of Apple's own artificial limits.

Android is the opposite of the iPhone OS. While the iPhone is all shiny, polished and sealed up, Android is customisable, accessible and open for anyone to tinker and code without stupid restrictions.

It is for that reason why I prefer the G1 to the iPhone. Had it been available on pay as you go at the time I got my iPhone, I would have certainly got it instead.

Give android another year, and it will over take all over phone OS's. It's so much more advanced then any other phone OS ever made- yet one of the most user friendly.

I like my iphone, but my android G1 destroys it when it comes to actual productivity. My iphone is my 'fun' phone i take to work and thrash. My G1 is the phone I use at home. Android will only get better.

Wow! Really? I hope so. I'm not trying to come down on Apple or the iPhone, but this sounds great. I'm new to "smartphones" & when I first bought the iPhone I thought it was the be all, end all. Until my company gave us G1's. The only thing I absolutely HATE about the G1 is the sliding out keyboard with the jutting lower chin of the phone - it kills my right wrist after awhile.

Hopefully a more ergonomical phone comes out soon.

Palm Pre is the only one I see. I've seen some reviews and hands on demonstrations and it is quite the "snappy" fella

Time will tell.

Edit: Forgot about android..although I think the G1 is a bit bulky and cheap looking.

Looks like im going with the Voyager. Nobody can give me a name of a phone for Verizon. You know I wouldnt switch with a more expensive company.

The Blackberry Storm is pretty mediocre and just wait till you try and sync it (or any other Blackberry) with your Mac

Sorry, we did get off track. (This sounds much more like a question for the HoFo boys, but okay.)

What about the Touch Pro or Omnia? Both are nice phones, with tons of UI tweaks available since they're WinMo.

Or since you like texting, the Saga has both touchscreen and front keyboard... so you can do everything one-handed.

if we're talking Verizon here the title should be more of a "best Verizon phone to compare with AT&T's iPhone", in my opinion the only good phones for Verizon at the moment are the LG Dare, LG Voyager, Blackberry Storm (almost all of Verizon's Blackberry's honestly). i don't know though i'm kind of just rattling these off...

Also Engadget has a post today that Pre will have Flash support. Looks like the Pre will have everything the iPhone can't do.

Copy and paste, data tethering, and now Flash -- it looks like the Pre's going to fill in a lot of unchecked iPhone feature boxes, doesn't it? Yep, Palm's just joined Adobe's Open Screen Project, and there's no two bones about what that means: the press release flat out says "the Open Screen Project will help deliver Adobe Flash Player for smartphones on the new Palm webOS platform." That's especially interesting since the webOS SDK is so heavily based on web technologies and native player support potentially opens the door for Flash-based apps, which would instantly bring a ton of new devs to the Pre. That's not a bad thing. We'll find out more at the end of the year, when the mobile Flash player is due to arrive.

Expect a lot more anti-iPhone / "we <3 iPhone but have some better features" as the Mobile World Congress rolls on.

For me, i'd go with "As it currently stands, the only real relevance Flash has anymore is for web video. The FLV video format remains so ubiquitous, that until something comes along that catches on faster, with better quality, Flash will stick around. Apple is pushing their H.264 format hard, and a deal with Youtube last year proved that other major players aren’t married to Flash. As we’ve previously explained, if the iPhone’s mobile Safari gets Flash, it better have an “off” setting."

That new Toshiba and the Samsung Omnia have Windows Mobile. WinMob completely sucks in my opinion. This is because of Microsoft's complete inability to keep any OS simple, instead opting for layers and layers of powerful but difficult-to-use submenus for even the simplest tasks.

I have yet to see anything that has come close to the iPhone's simplicity. We've had touchscreen phones for years but notice how everyone is only scrambling around to make an iPhone killer now that Apple has showed the way.

I do agree though that as an iPhone user we need all the competition we can get some Apple will deliver the things we want. :)

By the time the Pre is released and in the hands of most users, Apple will release the next generation iPhone. The same goes for phones announced at MWC.

I think it is safe to say that Apple is aware of the competition and will be prepared to offer something that will blow them away...again.

If we look at all the deals/purchases Apple has made over the years PA Semi, etc, Apple is coming up with a hardware structure that will compete heavily with other phone manufacturers.

There was an announcement that Adobe was working with Apple with Flash for the iphone. So that should be there soon.

To be honest, while other manufacturers can come up with pretty UI's and sexy bodies with nice hardware upgrades for the camera etc. None of them can touch Apple in terms of usability, the SDK, and the App/iTunes store.

Pre is nice, but their SDK is flawed and will limit what type of apps can be released. To be honest, bloated Flash apps and limited javascript apps can't touch what you can do with a true SDK and Objective C. That's why we have very interesting apps in the App store (as well as jailbroken) that can run intensely sophisticated games and programs.

Apple's distribution of these Apps and music is not perfect, but it is years ahead of everyone else.

With the faster processor and added hardware graphics support in the future we will see more UI enhancements to the OS. I relate it to the early years of OS X. The first versions were usable, it wasn't until Tiger and Leopard where Apple took off and made the operating system rock solid.

I have a feeling the reason the iphone 3G wasn't such a leap over the first generation was because Apple was concentrating on the next version with the new technologies they were working with.

Apple seems more content to compete in the mobile arena than their typical desktop/notebook space.

t will be interesting to see what Apple will do with the new iPhone.
