….upgrading to the 8 Plus might be a worthwhile move for a drastically better camera system, processing power and the addition of wireless charging.

i hate all this gimmicky crap….can I not charge a iPhone 8 or 8+ with a wire?

You can. But it's also equipped for wireless charging for those interested.

I'm also highly annoyed that Apple got rid of the 128GB option, forcing customers to pay $150 more for $5 in flash ram since 64 isn't enough for a lot of people. What a joke.

Pulling the cost of 192GB worth of flash storage modules out of your ass. What a joke.

what about the no headphone jack thing….so i have to buy wireless headphones for the 8?

It has a

Glass back
True tone
Portrait features
Better 4k recording
Better flash
Wireless charging
64gb rather than 32gb
25% louder than the 7
Faster charging

The 7 is old tech. Can't believe how many want to keep the 7. Fair enough you can't afford an X but the 8 is affordable.

iPhone 8 will flop. There's no difference between the 7 and this '7s'.

Rubbish.

It has an all new glass back like the X so it's not a "7s".

I can't see a reason for "upgrading" to the 8 if you have a 7. The 7 is plenty fast and the slightly better camera is just slightly better. In addition, if you have a 128GB 7, it's the perfect storage option.

That said, I'll be pre-ordering the X at midnight on 10-27.

....I wished it looked more different than the 7 (which is what I currently have).

I am debating whether or not to upgrade to the 8 but in actual fact, as I have never owned any of the 'Plus' models, am wondering if I went for the 8Plus, whether the phone would feel too big for me?! I can just about fit the 7 into my trouser pockets (especially when wearing denim jeans) so the 8Plus is not gonna fit at all?!

The 'S' cycles have always introduced new tech, while the 'number' cycles introduce new design. Looks like FaceID was the new tech intended for the 7S, but then Apple would have not had a knock-out feature (for lack of a better word) for their tenth anniversary phone. So they put FaceID in the X, realised they had nothing for the 7S, and so redesigned the body with glass and gave it a number upgrade.
If you have the 7, for god's sake do your bank account a favour and keep it. It's a great phone. It's already lost all the monetary value it will going forward, so keep it for another 2 years or so, sell it to a recycling website and get a new handset then.

Maybe people like buying a new iPhone every year. Only reason to stick with the 7 is if you have a contract.

Wait for next years phones as the X is smaller.

If I had a 7, the only drawing factor to upgrade to the 8 would be the lighting features of the new camera, and the wireless charging. Or if you need the larger storage. Also if I was an ARKit developer, I would definitely get the 8 Plus. If those are not critical, for me it's still better to wait for next year as the 7 is still a wonderful phone.

I have a 6S and I'm waiting until Apple put more than 2GB RAM on the non-plus iPhone, put dual camera on it, and make the iPhone IP68. Was hoping they would do it for the 8 (since it has glass back and everything), but they didn't. So 6S is staying and I'm waiting for next year. Hopefully by then all new iPhones will be OLED.

Of course if you're on the iPhone Upgrade Program, just upgrade every year. That's the point of the program. :D

Yeah, I am one of those people. I also have the Apple 1 year Upgrade program, so I kind of feel like I have to do something. Thank god for the X, if I had to "upgrade" to the 8, I would be so underwhelmed. There really is nothing new about it by complete model number change standards.

I listed all the changes above glass back, wireless charge, true tone all great updates and if you have a 32gb you double your memory.

The iPhone 7 is worth half as much as it was a year ago. If you sincerely think those changes are worth all that extra cash, then I say go for it and more power to you.

I'm not going to go back and forth with you, especially when you call the 7 "old technology", lol. There is nothing in your list that would make me feel like I had a new iPhone if I got the 8. Wireless charging is still TBD, by the time they release the "wireless" chargers, the 9 will be out. It's not really wireless by the way. It will be a nice coffee table or bedroom end table device.

Everyone has different requirements. I'm not a "heavy" phone user I guess, but I'm really happy with my 6S and iOS11 right now.

Glass back
Don't care - I usually use a leather case

True tone
Don't care - well, until I see it then I might!

Portrait features
Not sure if I care or not

Better 4k recording
Never record video

Better flash
That would be useful

Wireless charging
I plug in and charge overnight. Wireless would be easier

64gb rather than 32gb
My 6S has 16GB. Even 32 would be a luxury! Yes, my next phone needs more than 16 for sure

25% louder than the 7
Don't play music on the speakers; FaceTime is loud enough

Faster charging
My 6S using an old iPad charger seems to charge quick enough

All new phones are an iterative improvement over the previous one (albeit with changes that for some are a downgrade, such as lack of 3.5mm stereo out). Basically, one needs to compare the features, work out the price differential and make a decision. I suspect the confusion now over the available range of SE, 7, 8 and X will actually stop some people from upgrading at all.

I'd say the only meaningful jump is from 7+ to 8+ if you take a lot of picture because the new portrait mode is awesome.
But with about $200 more you can have iPhone X, big display better than the LCD but smaller body.

If you don't care about inductive charging the 8 is pointless, and buying iPhone 7 at a lower price is better.
I like the glass back more than the aluminium, but is not worth the price difference, especially if 32GB are enough. If you chose the second tier the price difference between 7 128GB and 8 64GB is tiny, so if 64GB are enough is better to buy the 8 since A11 is a monster compared to the A10.

I think I'll stick with my 6s for now, waiting for a good deal on a 7+ or a 8+, but I doubt I'll find the new one at a low price anytime soon. Or I could wait another year and buy the X at a lower price

Wow, so you're just quoting Phil Schiller here like a zombie, aren't you?
The appeal for people to upgrade from last year's iPhone (or iPhone 6s) to iPhone 8 has never been so low in comparison to previous iPhone releases. The difference between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 is marginal.
It has never been that way, there have always been (more or less) major and attractive new features that made people upgrade. And, more importantly, you didn't have much of a choice, did you? The features were enough to convince yourself that it might be a good idea to upgrade the device. Now, with knowing that there is a real flagship, the difference becomes a lot smaller.
This year however, you'll have the choice between reasonably staying with your current iPhone (7 / 6s) or upgrading to iPhone X - which a lot of people won't be able to - so they'll eventually decide to stay with their current devices.
As a shareholder, this should be a major concern.

Personally, I'm sitting here with a iPhone 7 128 GB, thinking about upgrading to iPhone X. But I don't want the ******** 64 GB version. I want 256 GB. But I'm in Germany, so getting the iPhone X with 256 GB + leather case + Apple Care + will add up to almost $2000. So you see that this might be a problem for apple, charging the same amount of money for a phone as for their Macbook Pro line?

Surely the 6s to a 7 was less of a jump?

In my opinion yes. But to keep it that way, maybe you're even right - maybe the jump was as small as usual.
But the simultaneous release of iPhone X revealed the fact that the difference between 7 and 8 is absolutely minor!

Does anyone know if the iPhone 8 will fit/work with the iPhone 7 smart battery case?

I think it should as all the other iPhone 7 cases work with the 8. The size specs differences between the 7 and 8 are minimal

I feel you on that storage issue. Apple really fd me over with the removal of the 128gb option (or at least the non inclusion of a 512gb option while making 256gb the same cost as 128gb last year)

Now if I want more than 64gb I’m out an extra $120 CAD or so compared to last year. At $1319 CAD for 64GB, the X might have been an option for me if it weren’t for the storage ($1490 after tax but I might have been able to grin and pay it). Now I have to pay $1529 plus tax for the 256GB version. The cost of the 64gb model was a stretch. I can’t YOLO enough to justify the cost of the 256GB version. Apple really put me in a tough spot upgrade wise. I’ll be sad not to upgrade this year but my bank account will be happy

so I have a battery case on my 128gb 7 which gives me a full days worth of power. I can’t see myself wanting to remove the case on the daily to charge an iPhone 8 and then charge the battery Case separately as normal. Wouldn’t make much sense.

Also I’d be paying more than I did last year for an extra 128gb of storage that I don’t need (although I do need more than 64gb). Is there any point at all to upgrade for those that have a 128gb iPhone 7, don’t care about wireless charging and don’t need the extra storage?

Seems like I’m gonna spend the next month trying to convince myself why I need to drop a mortgage payment on an X when I really don’t need to lol

So....for iPhone 7 owners....any point in upgrading to an 8?

In terms of design I wouldn't upgrade to 8. The front of the iPhone 8 has become boring now. Although back looks nice. I have used wireless charging in samsung phones but my excitement of charging phone wirelessly soon went away. I use wireless charging rarely now. I have 7 plus and i have no interest in upgrading to 8. 256GB storage capacity will be handy in long run but i know some ppl who are happy with even with 16GB of storage. I like iphone x but without the top cutout.

A11 faster, duel speakers, true color display, better cameras, glass back! I am going upgrading to the 8! The 10 is too big for my needs! 8+ is giant size!

How is the X too big for your needs? It's almost the same dimensions as the 8 (non-plus). It's like 0.2" taller and wider. Much smaller than the plus.

Th
I'm in the iPhone Upgrade Program, and I've got the 7 Plus and will be upgrading to the 8 Plus. I don't see a reason not to.

This is what I'm trying to decide, and it seems I need to make up my mind rather quickly! I like the idea of the X only because I'd get the same screen size in a smaller phone, but I'm used to my bigger phone and don't know if I want to give it up. I likely don't NEED to go with the 8+, but if I'm making payments anyway, why not? They aren't going away regardless.
