If I dressed up I'd wear one of my other watches. I'm mostly dressed down though. Jeans and a t-shirt or workout clothes. I like playing with tech and the watch is a cool piece of tech, but it is hard for me to justify close to ~600 for that.

Sure the ~200 difference is somewhere around a day's work for me, but I want to retire some day and dollars add up.

I was torn between the sport and SS, but I ultimately wanted the AW because of the fitness ability so decided to save money on the first gen with the Sport and see how I like it. I am VERY please with my purchase but also glad I didn't spend another $200 for the SS. With a armorsuit screen cover I don't worry about scratches, either.

You know, when I started considering which Apple Watch I should go for, I firstly was thinking a lot about that unbelievably high price tag. I knew that spending an awful lot of money on a product - especially a first generation one - would be ridiculous.

After some thinking, I decided it would be either the Apple Watch Sport (silver aluminum/space gray) or the Stainless Steel Apple Watch with one of the sport bands available. And I went for the Apple Watch Sport with White Sport Band. Not just because of the price, but because I don't even like the shiny stainless steel. It may look more premium to a lot people, but I really prefer the matte silver aluminum.

I'm still quite concerned about the strength of this material. Not just of the case, but also the display which isn't made of sapphire. I would have no issue with paying those extra bucks getting that better material. Although I do have to say those videos on YouTube have made me feel more convinced about the fact aluminium and the Ion-X Glass display is pretty strong after all.

Not to mention that, since the Apple Watch Sport weighs less compared to the more expensive models, I'd assume it's the perfect watch for those who haven't worn a watch before. After all, it doesn't feel like something bulky. Something that might be different when wearing the Stainless Steel Apple Watch.

Anyway, my Apple Watch Sport is doing well since I got it (last Friday) and I'm very happy with it. I hope (and have been reading) this applies to other owners of the same model as well. :)

After seeing both the watch and sport in person at the Apple Store and trying them on, I'm very happy I canceled my apple sport order. The sport looks like a toy and too much of a gadget then an actual nice timepiece. And all the band looks off on the sport besides the sport band. I really like the Milanese band which I ordered as an extra and that looks awful in the sport

I received mine today and I love the look of it. I actually just canceled my order for the SS version.

I ordered the 42mm aluminum sport right when preorders opened and received it on launch day. My thinking was that it was the first gen, I might as well get the cheapest version.

About 5 days later, I realized I was afraid of rubbing the watch against anything for fear that the screen would scratch. I also realized that stylistically, my instincts about preferring the aluminum were wrong and that I should have gone for the stainless steel.

That day, I placed an order for the 42mm stainless steel. The 6th day, the watch was on Craigslist and that night I sold it. I made enough profit on that that I'm getting the SS for $60 more than I paid for the Sport, making it a no brainier.

I know many people are incredibly happy with the Sport, and that's awesome. I realized after a few days that I should not have cheaped out, and am anxiously awaiting my SS Apple Watch.

I received my sport on the first day and still wearing it (I love the watch so much because it is great for my workout). Once I get my SS in June, I will sell this one. There are many awesome bands I want to have (Link, and Milanese for sure) that I want to buy. I do not think the v2 will have a different band change so I want to invest in the bands. Sport looks cheap for me.

Somebody at work asked me the other day if I wore a Pebble watch. I almost punched her in the face (j/k).

I still think the best choice is the Sport..

People are talking about the glass and how important sapphire is, and while I agree that having sapphire is always better, the glass on the sport watch is EXTREMELY well made. Drawback to the S.S watch, micro scratches that will require a watch buffing every few months, ESPECIALLY if you use the watch to lift weights and other activities. So you have a double edge sword.

Aluminum which does not show scratches as easy, but has a less resistant screen.. Or well, SS with Saphire but a 100% promise it will show scratches.

Also, I still do not believe this watch is a dress up watch at all.. I've worked at various watch stores in my earlier days, and a mechanical watch, with a display of the movement will always trump the Apple watch. I think over time the new factor of the item will wear of and that watch will be used for what the public's intentions are,

every day gadget to track your workout. I believe that is the biggest reason people are buying the item. Workout data has taken off and everyone wants to now dial in on every calorie burnt.

For me, black aluminum with black band. The watch will technically go with any outfit you wear, but like most have said. That watch is limited to a few bands. The rest look out of place.

also for a first gen product, no thanks on the markup. I am VERY excited for the future of the watch and how it will incorporate into our lives. But the whole single word text back isn't too plausible for tons of people, like myself. So the other features are the selling point. Workout track and stuff.

Solves one problem, creates another. I stand by my assertion that using a magnet (as with the leather loop) or pin (as with my Adidas Smart Run) would have been preferable.

The material couldn't support the magnet design. Plastic breaks when thin. I think after 6 months there would be lot's of crappy looking and broken sports bands if they had a magnet. Also the resistance of that plastic would work against the magnet's purpose. Why is my strap falling off? I can here it know.

I questioned whether I should've ordered the SS instead of the SG Sport. I ordered a second watch, the SS, in case it shipped sooner. SG Sport arrived first and I'm likely going to hold onto it.

SS is definitely more versatile, but SG is sleek and looks really good. All that bs about it feeling and looking cheap are from people trying to impress the Internet.

Or maybe, just maybe, they prefer the stainless steel......

If the overspecced polymer that Apple has used couldn't deal with magnets we know it can deal with pins, since it already uses one.

Just saying the SAphire screen has a mohs hardness rating of 9. The ion-x glass has an 8.
So as long as your not running around rubbing it against things harder then topaz you shouldn't get any bad scratches on the ion-x.
But wear & rare is normal.
Apple care + should take care of any scratches that are ruining the look of the screen. But micro scratches are normal.

I had the 42mm Space Grey Sport...but I was so stinking worried about scratches. Between that and the obscene prices on Craigs (I got $700 cash out of it)...I'm upgrading to a version of the 42mm SS. Got three in order...(black leather loop, classic buckle and sport band) whichever one comes first is the one that I keep!

no regrets,
it is what it is, i had no unreal expectations.
it works fine, tracks my runs etc.
tells me the time
in regards to scratches etc, i couldn't care less, this is a toy and will never be my primary watch i have many real watches that i wear daily

in 6-12 months the much improved 2nd gen will arrive. And that will be the time to spend the extra on SS.

Yup, I have regrets only due to the quality of the Ion-X glass. Called Apple customer service and they approved my request for a return exception since I was a week out of my return window (14 days, received mine on launch day).

Ordered the SS BSB version and a Milanese loop band. My main concern was not having the sapphire display for long term use. I don't intend on upgrading the watch every year so I want the most durability and also flexibility when it comes to band options. Not much Space Grey band flexibility yet although I'm sure more third-party vendors will make some in the future.

Here's hoping the SS case doesn't scratch like my old iPod did. If it does, hopefully the important part, the glass, doesn't scratch.

I regret buying the ss (have returned it). The coating over the sapphire screen came off making it look like the screen was scratched when it was just the coating. Defeats the point of a sapphire screen...

This is a major concern for me - I don't have mine yet, but the idea of a coating - one that will degrade under normal use and become visibly evident - on a sapphire screen is extremely worrying. :(

I love my sport. Lookswise, I'd love the shiny stainless, but would I pay extra for it? Nope. I'm satisfied and have no issues with it.

Regarding scratches, I'm glad I have a clear film protector on it since I've found scuffs on the film itself from regular use since the 24th...the scuffs have buffed out though, so no worries there.

Exactly the opposite. Close to $1500 for a SS + Linked Band. It goes the best with suit. In my case it's style first, tech second.

different strokes for different folks.
I still think part of a watch's appeal is heritage. No matter how you dress it up, the apple watch is never going to be as classy as even a Tag heuer

I've used my sport during multiple contact sport games and it doesn't have a single scratch on it (knock on wood)

I have the 38mm SG BSB (green SB will arrive next week). I immediately knew I wanted the SG! I love the color and matte look. I am a woman in my 40s, I off road, ride a motorcycle with tattoos and piercings every where with 2 small children, married to an amazing man and I DON'T like shiny jewelry! I hate gold and wear only silver. I am not a 'jewelry' person (except the jewelry I wear in all my piercings) to begin with, I wear a nice, very thin, silver peridot band on my wedding finger & my wedding band is a tattoo, the ring, my husband bought, it's very special (my mom's birth stone, who passed away)! A peridot bracelet to match, and a silver mother's necklace. I have more tattoos on my body than 'jewelry' that I wear.

I bought the watch bcs I ride a motorcycle and have young kids (2 under 7), the watch makes things easy when I'm riding cuz I keep my phone tucked away in pockets or saddle bags (difficult to reach for on a bike) and quick glances keep me outta trouble and up to date with my family/life. It helps when I'm busy with my kids, no need to hunt for my phone cuz all I need is on my wrist so my attention can be primarily on my kids.

I have an iPhone 6+, so price is no factor. If I like it, I get it (regardless of what "everyone else has")! I chose what I liked, what was good for ME & MY style (not because of material, price, popular, not popular, cheap, not cheap...etc.). I could afford either style but I didn't like the shiny SS. I like how discreet the SG is. I do everything on my iPhone 6+, the watch is what it was made for, an extension of my phone and helps simplify my chaotic life a little more. I haven't worn a watch in over 10 years! I've been wearing it for 2 days and it's simplicity made it easy to quickly adjust. The materials were no factor either bcs I cover all my Apple products!

BTW...it DOESN'T look cheap or 'toy-like' or like a 'cheap-out' version or anything of that sort as/my opinion. IMO the SS looks cheap! But to each their own! As far as the bands, NOT an issue, because I am NOT a fashionista! I like the simplicity of the sport bands, they're comfortable. I am allergic to anything that isn't real gold, silver or stainless steel (or whatever that material is they use for piercing jewelry out of...LOL) so the SBs are perfect for ME! I rarely dress up so no worries on that point! And I got the green band cuz it's my favorite color! Although if they would of had a drab green I would of preferred that one cuz being a veteran at heart, it connects me to that wonderful part of my past!

So for what it's worth, no regrets!#

I did at first.

But now that I've had my 42mm space gray for a few days I'm happy with it and canceled my SS order.

I used the extra money to buy a blue leather band for it, so we'll see how that looks when I finally get it.

Now that I've had the watch for a few days, a 42mm SG Sport, I can say I'm very happy with my decision. The SG is very subtle and sleek. It doesn't pop out and catch the eye the way the SS does, which to me is actually a plus. I got this watch for me, not to be eye candy on my wrist. And I love how understated it is. The space grey is pleasingly dark, much more so than on the recent iPhones/iPads, and gives the watch a slight two tone look that I think is very classy.

I've tried on the SS and I don't have an ounce of desire to switch to it. It didn't feel any more substantial on my wrist than the sport, and I simply did not prefer the polished silver of the steel over the matte gray of the aluminum on the SG.

As I said before, I could see myself splurging on a black SS in gen 2 or 3, as that is the only one that looks even better than the SG, IMO. But for almost $1,300 after tax and Applecare+, I have no remorse over getting the only slightly less sleek SG for about a third of the total price of the black.

I will say that every silver sport I've seen photos of does look cheap to me, not a knock on anyone who got one, just my personal opinion. The SG really goes a long way toward making the sport look its best. I also haven't seen the silver sport in person outside of in a glass case at an Apple Store, and I hear it looks better in real life than it does in photos.

Either way, I think there's no reason to buy a SS watch if you're comfortable with a sport, or if you're uncertain that it's a good value proposition. If you can't justify the price of the SS, then get a sport and enjoy it! Any of the jokers here who put people down for getting a sport instead of an SS have their own issues to deal with. Get what you like and rock the hell out of it!

SS vs Sport

I tried on the SS with a leather band and a sports watch with a sports band at the Apple store this week. A lot depends on your life and personal style. If I had beaucoup bucks, I'd buy both but since I don't, here's my take.

The sport is lightweight and super comfy. The stainless, especially with a leather band is elegant and a little heavier. You definitely know you have a watch on and it feels like something you need to be careful of. Surprisingly, there are more reports of scratched SS cases than sports (see the thread on this site for the poll). If you want a watch that you can put on and pretty much forget about, go with the sport. If you war to dress to impress and are willing to baby it a little more, go with the stainless.

I'm going with the sport.

My first intent was to buy the SG, on 4/10 I went to the local Apple here in Orlando FL. My wife and her girls Friends where there as well. So I tried on the 42mm SG sport, my first impression wasn't good at all. Even though the watch look great in person, I just didn't like the way it look on my wrist. My wife and her girls friends didn't have to much to say about it either.

So I ask the nice lady to let me try the 42mm SS with the classic buckle. She put the watch on my wrist, the moment I turn my wrist and hold it up towards me. The reaction from my wife and her girl friends said it all. They where like Wow! That's the one, and to be honest They where Right. The SS look way better on my wrist than the SG Sport.

So later that day I came home and place and order for two SS model. 38mm WSB for my wife and 42mm BSB for my self. Along with classic buckle for me and Milanese for my wife. All my wife girl friends went with the SS as well. So just the other day we where talking about the sport model. And how some people saying it look cheap and like a toy.

And my wife said she doesn't think it looks cheap. And that she think that some people could where it and look good doing so. But she said that she couldn't see me wearing it. And that it wouldn't look good on me. So I think that about sums it up, that the Sport is not for everyone. And the same goes for the SS.

My wife received her watch three days before Mother's Day. And her Millanese band aswell. Was really happy for her. I am still waiting for mine however. I must say though watching my wife where her sport band. When she goes power walking up and down sugarloaf mountain. And switching Back to he Millanese for work. What I like with the SS is how u can dress it up and dress it down. It's like u have the best of both worlds with it. And to me that's worth the extra $200.

I think that The SS and the Watch Edition is more of a fashion statement first and function second. And the Sport well is just function and nothing more. And to me there is nothing wrong with that. All three models is going to appeal to a certain type of people and that's ok. It's a win for everybody in the end, and no one should feel bad about there particular choice of watch that they bought enjoy it.

Also people are saying that they will wait until Jen 2 etc, to get the watch they really want. Why do that to your selfs? The way I see it tomorrow is not promise. Get the one u really want and enjoy it. Now I can understand if money is a factor here, that is stoping one from getting the one they really want. Me I live my life like its my last day. And yes if I had the money for the watch Edition I would get that in a heart beat. That's just way I roll, if I like something and I have the money. I am going to get it period.

Anyway people enjoy your watches! cheers.

Have had 42mm SG since launch day (4/24) and still no marks or scratches.

I wipe it to check semi often but i'm not exactly careful. I've gone out with it, spilled beer on it etc. and it's running just fine.

The crown got sticky from beer but I just did what apple suggests and ran it under water. Working great!

Love it!
