Vegetarian here for nearly nine months. In January my g/f and I decided to go vegetarian cold turkey. I went vegetarian because of some terrible GI issues, 95% of which have went a way now. Watching Food, Inc. was also a big reason behind the change.

I have been enjoying being vegetarian. I make my own veggie burgers and my own bake setain (mmmm veggie gyros). Being vegetarian has really opened my cooking world. Now when my g/f or I watch Food Network we are always trying to veg. the recipes. While I am not sure if/when I would go vegan, I am making more and more vegan dishes. One of my favorite "junk" meals is making homemade vegan mac and cheeze with nutritional yeast, mmmmm. I made vegan cupcakes for my co-workers on my birthday, they couldn't even tell the difference and raved about them.

Congrats on the 9 months RCGMac :). Likewise one of the things going vege did with me was massively increase my cooking range. All of a sudden there are so many more flavours to exploit. And the other thing it changed was gertting fruit and vege from the supermarket to actually buying it at a proper greengrocers. The taste difference is astounding.

Are you a vegetarian or vegan? Why?

I have a decent number of friends who are one of the above.

If you are one of the above. Why?

If you are not one of the above, why not?

I personally do not think I could handle being a veggie or a vegan, I find meat to be very tasty, and do not think I would want to go on without it. I also enjoy animal based products to much, so being a vegan wont work either.

I have no problem with people who make that choice.

I just don't understand it, you miss out on so much great food.

No, because meat is delicious, we have teeth made to eat it, and if we weren't meant to eat it, we wouldn't be able to digest it.

Plus animal based products are great.

I can agree with this.

It's not that I see a pig or hog as something that tastes good, but kill it, drain it off all its blood, turn it into pork, bacon, and ribs and thrown in a smoker for 12 hours? Yes.

I like steak, chicken, and seafood too much to give it up completely. But if I were put into a situation where I had no other choice, I could easily live with being a vegetarian. I've eaten enough veggie-meals over the years to know that it's not all half bad. In fact, it's actually really good sometimes.

But a vegan? Uh uh. You can pry my cheeses from my cold, dead hands.

I like meat too much to ever become a vegetarian or a vegan. But if that is what someone chooses to do, I have no problem with it.

My same thoughts. I can't give meat up. A friend of mine once used the following argument on me:

I am vegetarian because I only eat what I can kill/produce. I bet you eat meat and can't even kill a chicken...

Fast forward two days and in front of him, I killed a chicken, plucked, gutted and eventually southern fried it. [I was vacationing in Honduras when this happened]

Can I kill a cow? If I ever want freshly cut NY Steak, then yes, I will. Sorry for getting sidetracked there.

Vegetarian for over 23 years.

Why?

Because I want to reduce the amount of suffering that I require other animals to endure for my sake.

And yes, my shoes, belts, wallet are vegetarian as well. If the alternative is available and affordable, I try to use it.

I couldnt either, it tastes to good.

I have had that argument used on me as well, but because I own lots of lands I keep a few chickens on it, and every deer season I typically shoot a decent sized deer, throw it in the truck, then take it to the local meat store that specialized in butchering animals.

Deer steaks and deer jerky, can't beat it ;)

Bambi tastes so good.

I don't know if that was intentional, but you made me spill water over myself reading this. Kudos good sir, kudos.

I can't imagine not eating meat. I can't think of one person I know that doesn't. That said, if the vegan thing makes you feel better about yourself, I say go for it.

I agree with this.

What I can't stand are militant veggies who go on and on in your face about " Don't eat or wear animal products! Your killing mother earth! Waaaa! "

It just tastes to good.

Its like the same people who think hunting deer is wrong, despite the MASSIVE overpopulation in the Northeast.

Do you do acts of kindness because they make you feel better about yourself?

Or do you do acts of kindness because they are a natural expression of compassion?

That's the thing about vegans. Many of them (not saying all), tend to berate and think less of people who eat meat. Why? Whhaaaa you killing Earth! Whhaaaa you are brutal to animals! Whaaaa you don't care about animals!

List can go on and on... but at the end of the day, these people try to force feed their vegan agenda down our throats.

Reminds me of something.

I have some vegetarian friends who are vegetarian because they can't imagine a cow dying for their dinner. And they are still my friends as long as they don't mind me eating whatever I want. Don't bother me about what I eat and I won't bother you.

Saw this today: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertai...s-eating-animals-pedophilia-article-1.1566805

Comparing eating animals to pedophilia? Wow.

Once I get enough free time when my business becomes self running ( its been a year, but its getting to the point where it will ) to a point.

I plan on getting a few cows myself, they'll be delicious.

Yet there has been no berating.

Someone asked specifically about vegetarianism and I offered my perspective.

If you add more to that, it's coming from your own mind.

I still buy and cook steak, chicken and fish for my wife.

It's my choice for my life ... I'm not trying to force it on anyone else.

I'm not saying you. I am just stating what tends to happen. In your case, you've shown respect for decisions. Something which, sadly, not many show.

I appreciate you being understanding about it.

As a veteran of many of these discussions, they often becomes polarized and contentious.

I hope for the best in this thread, but history says otherwise.

If you want to steer away us meat eaters from bothering you too much, just bring up something even more contentious for us to fight over.

Like beef ribs vs. pork ribs. Which is better, and why. I say beef ribs, because you get more, and they taste a helluva lot better overall. And I've had enough good pork ribs to say that with some confidence.

NOW COME AT ME, YALL! TRY TO PROVE ME WRONG!
