I agree X will be newest in the iPhone line when it launches. But comparing who’s newer for iPhones is really meaningless, because there’s a new model every year.

In years past, I'd agree. But this year, there were two (three if you count 8/8+) "new models" introduced. One is their flagship. The other is just the last of the old line of technology.

Unfortunately for us, both are priced so close together as to make owning "new old" versus "new new" a clear choice for most users. Either pay almost as much for the "new old" or pay almost the same and get the "new new."

There is only one flagship. It's the X. Either that or the 8/8+ is the "new SE" and I think that's a bit much considering their is already a SE equivalent in the lineup.

I'm definitely not going to try and talk anyone into getting the X. The more supply the better for me!

Eh, not really. By the time the X is out, no matter when that date comes, the 8/8+ becomes the default "last years model."

No two ways around it really. The 8 is already old. The day it was announced it was already a legacy product.
I wouldn't think of it that way. We here, the most technologically loyal to Apple, get really excited about the latest and greatest. There are a great many people, even Apple fans, that aren't. Instead of the addition of an 'S' and a price drop, this year Apple served them up with completely updated hardware. If you are on a 5s, 6, or 6s then the 8 is a really advanced upgrade. Some people don't want to pay $1K for a device or maybe they've heard it wont ship for months. In that case the 8 is perfect. You can walk in and try it out, see how much snappier and prettier it is than your janked up 6 and walk out of the store with it immediately and probably at discount. Aside from the panel and FaceID, it has the same innards and camera. It's not last year's tech or model.

I'm still surprised that Apple created a different phone with new hardware and materials yet still people say "it's the same" because it's a rectangle with round corners. Guess what... the iPhone X is a rectangle with round corners.

Here’s my spin on the 8/8+. What if they are the last generation of iPhone that dons the current bezel look? Let’s say from now on all future iPhones will have some kind of bezel-less design. Wouldn’t that make the current 8/8+ some kind of collection items? 8/8+ will always have their names in apple history because of it.

There are no issues with the X, and I couldn't be more excited to get it as close to day one as possible. I'm looking to move forward, not stay with the same design and display four years in a row.

I'm most pumped about the lack of home button and new fast App swap left/right by just sliding left and right on the home indicator. That's a major multitasking supercharger.

Wow you must have one in hand. How is it going using the iPhone X?

When have there ever been showstopping issues with an iPhone? Never. Showstopping issues that were never resolved and made the entire generation of iPhone not usable or enjoyable to use in the slightest? Double never. I've owned every single one, day one.

Apple has put a lot into it, and there is absolutely zero reason to assume it's just going to suck from the get go. I guess that's why they make the 8, for those who are unnecessarily skeptical.

And for those who aren't seeing it, this dude, with a signature full of Samsung devices, is posting all over an iPhone-specific forum on an Apple-focused website that he'd rather die than use iOS ever again.

Hope this is getting you off super hard, buddy.

hi Tim! (or Phil?)

You people are ridiculous. Next time they should announce the phone and go "And we've built a chip right into the device that will brick it upon the third boot!" just to trigger skeptics.

This topic is guilty until proven innocent - why not just assume the phone is going to function as pitched? That's how it's been for an actual decade.

Well if your phone burst into flame like a burning bush you might see it as a quasi-religious experience too ;)

I agree. Either that or the X is the one-off and they go back to the 8/8Plus form factor next year but with no chin/forehead and FaceID. Once they start refining the tech and get a handle on the manufacturing they can go in any direction they want. Can you imagine a Plus with edge to edge display? Can you?!? It would sell out in 4 seconds on pre-order night...

See that looks terrible to me compared to the X.

Yeah but need vs. want is directly proportionate to disposable income vs. gadget lust so......
That depends on an individual. Can you control yourself from wanting latest and greatest item? I try to rationalize what I buy. Sometimes I go for things I want as well, but usually, I stick with rationalizing my purchase.

It’s a bit moot asking if people waiting for the X regret not getting the 8. They’re not yet committed to buying the X and can buy an 8 at any time if they have regrets.

You know I read a story on Medium the other night where the author suggested that maybe the notch isn't a mistake or compromise but instead a branding move by Apple since that makes it stand out against the competition...

https://medium.com/swlh/the-iphone-x-notch-is-all-about-branding-aef4f34c365b

That is interesting. Apple has always been different and they are not afraid to make the changes not everyone will agree with. I know they have faced a lot of scrutiny over the years for hardware/software changes, but I respect their decisions as a Company, even if it means it inconveniences us in attempt to make the product a better experience. But I understand not everyone will agree with that.

Not the majority. Data shows this. The majority of people who buy a new phone are never people coming from the previous generation. Yes, many people will always want the latest in greatest, but in the real world, most people don’t care that much. They just want something for texting, instagram, and selfies.
That might only be half true. The majority of people are on a yearly upgrade plan now. Makes sense to just turn it in and get the latest. I was on iPhone forever with Sprint for 2 years. I had my upgrade available but jumped ship and did the Next every year over the weekend with AT&T. iPhone 8 Plus, I’ll be content with it until the next iPhone. Look at the woes with iOS 8,9,10 and 11 on previous generations.

I regret upgrading from the 6s to the 7. There's nothing wrong with the 7, I just feel like I literally gained nothing and my 6s would be paid off now. This year if the only thing that came out was the 8 I would definitely have skipped it.

Since the X is a complete redesign its a must have for me.
