Make no mistake, Apple is using your data/info for their benefit. I'm not defending MS, but by the same token, I can turn it off easy enough. I haven't researched it, but I can do that with apple?
Apple's secrecy is what disturbs most people but we know they also have the most to lose since they have a loyal customer base heavily invested in their ecosystem. If Apple breaches that trust of data privacy too much it could turn off many of those formerly loyal customers for good.

On the other hand MS has been admitting for years with Windows 10 that they grab and store your data. They say that you can opt out or turn it off but they were already caught a few years ago with their Windows 10 product still accessing their customer data despite previous statements you had control over your private data.

Recently in the news it's been reported that new versions of MS Office will have AI that analyzes your documents and makes politically correct word suggestions on the fly about how you should express yourself in your documents... kind of like "Big Brother" implementing "new speak" while you type. I hope users of their products are aware how brazenly invasive have become. Although I do use their products... I have Windows 10 installed in VMs and I use MS Office... I still don't trust them period.

You should trust all of them as if you caught them stealing money from your wallet. They come first, their shareholders come second, and then the rest of us are down the list somewhere behind priorities we will never know. The company doesn't matter.

So I am left pondering my choices. Should I migrate back to Apple or accept that these things we use are tools and they all do the job almost the same.

Only you can decide. I was all in at one point, iMac, Mac Mini, MBP, iPhone, iPad but that has changed to a mix and it works just fine.

I code, PHP, Javascript and node.js. for that, the environment macOS provides is awesome, there I said it :)

But for everything else, I just don't need Apple or their devices.

All I have now is a Mac Mini, when I am coding it gets used when moving between homes in the UK and Spain, fits in my carry on bag. keyboard, mouse, monitor and cables are in both locations. For what I use it for it is perfect.

Still love the iPad, its the device they always seem to get right in my view. iPadOS may enhance that.

Windows Desktop and laptop for everything else. Devices that still interconnect and do the job, well.

I'm not so sure about that... It's analyzing your grammar in relation to content. In other words it's AI analyzing how your think and making suggestions based on how MS thinks you should speak. You might think you can trust it now but you don't know how much of that information will be stored, flagged and re-analyzed by MS in the future. It's not just a matter of correcting spelling mistakes in order to improve written communication... Even if you believe it's not sending private thought data back to MS there is still the problem of this AI feature trying to change the way that you communicate in your private documents.

It is going to be just another option to the existing ones, using the same engine. And you can turn it off if you feel offended.

Don't use windows then. I mean it's not for you, stick with Apple.
Except for Windows 7 and programs that require other legacy versions of Windows I don't use it that much. The Windows 10 versions that I use are locked in their own VM cage until I decide to unleash them.

I am considering switching when it comes time to buy hardware again. This would be hopefully in another 1-2 years for my laptop, and / or 2-4 years for my desktop. Already started migrating logins to 1password so I have a multi-platform solution there. If I had to replace my laptop tomorrow I'd get a windows one, probably a x1c or xps.

This is mostly a personality thing. I like to tinker around, and as much as I love the apple ecosystem integration, they do not offer that experience. I purchased a 2019 iMac when they came out so I can continue pursuing learning Swift. Using terminal is really valuable to my computer science education and workflow so windows was a non starter for a real long time, and linux requires that I learn a lot more before it could become my only environment. With the rise of the WSL stuff and new windows terminal though, I am heavily considering the switch. While the OS and devices are not as tightly integrated, I do have the option of having everything I want in one environment (development, video games, nvidia for cuda) which has been my holy grail of computing for some time.

I do not really see my thoughts changing on the matter unless:
1. My swift stuff really takes off and becomes a possible career avenue, which as a student is a long shot right now
2. They really make things right with the next laptop design
3. They finally offer up some kind of xMac

Would still stick with their iOS devices though.

Exactly, which is why I'm looking deeper at Linux these days. I rather tire of these companies harvesting personal data for their own needs. Problem being moving to Linux is not always straight forward depending on workflow, although it's definitely improving at lot.

I work with Linux constantly in a server context, as a desktop, meh, no chance. It's just too much work still. You need to be willing to tinker and work at Linux, it is not what an OS should be for most, it should just work.

Turning those options off in Windows doesn't do much good. Best way is to use https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/

The rabbit hole is much much deeper than those options available to you in Windows.

There is no "rabbit hole". You are just trying to make Apple look better and tell yourself that they are just wonderful because you have swallowed the kool aid... And as for TronScript, it is like providing Tin Foil hats to the easily duped. All Microsoft cares about is how Windows is running. They don't collect personal data, they don't need it. They are not an advertising company. Now if you use their store or Cortana then they will pay attention to what you buy or keep track of things such as appointments. This is no different than what Apple does.

The only people that need to worry are those engaging in illegal activities, such as child porn. Even then those are usually caught through e-mail, and cloud usage. Both Apple and Microsoft use scanners in order find these sort of things. The scanners look for certain type of images and other red flags.

Is a thief that warns his victims that he's going to steal from them any less harmful l than the thief that hides his crimes?

Google seems to just lie about and hide the extent of their activities. MS is playing the legal CYA (covering their a...) game by admitting that they grab and store your data. I'm sure Apple isn't innocent either but if we had to rank the list of data thieves they might be the least guilty of the bunch... but of course we don't really know do we? We can agree that it would be naive to put too much trust in any of them.

There really isn't much point in getting worked up over any of this. This is life in 2019. Far more egregious is the fact that many government public records are now put online. It use to be that only certain people had access and you had to go to the hall or records in person. Now there are predatory sites that for a fee look up all sorts of personal information. Trying to avoid a stalker? Forget it... For a small fee your new residence can be found in a moment. Once had a DUI five years ago, but since cleaned up your act. Better be prepared to disclose it no matter how embarrassing, because any possible employer can check on it even from another state.

These are the things that are a real threat to personal freedom, yet people sit and wring their hands over someone seeing what they bought online at Amazon. Suddenly protecting privacy is the new buzzword for the very government that constantly invaded it.

And will get so much more ground into our daily lives in the future. The vast majority of websites are free to visit and browse, the people that give blood, sweat and tears to provide you with the free, open web everyone wants pay for their time through adverts and sponsorship.

Oh wait, so many think that those ads are bothersome so everyone is installing ad blockers. Cause why should they see ads on a website.

Ok, so you don't want ads and people have to eat. I have been working on a project for a company that has seen revenues fall so much due to ad blockers that they need alternatives. The result? I can't discuss it right now but seeing the ads would be a far better option :)

Free things come at a price.

Are you presenting your personal opinions as facts now?

Everyone install Win10, Mendota says it's safe and not spyware at all, Microsoft don't do that stuff.

I can't even tell what you are trying to say. The bottom line here is that you are an Apple fanboy, and as such you lack objectivity about others. Like most fanbois you believe what Apple tells you. I have myself checked the telemetry that Microsoft collects as have many others. There is no personal information. There are tools in Office that you can choose to allow Microsoft to collets usage as well and they ask. Adobe does the same thing as do many software developers.

If you want to believe that Apple is the holy grail, and that you are "important" because you belong exclusively to the Apple club... Go right for it. But the fact of the matter is Apple only care about your money same as any other company.

I could not agree more. I myself do not use ad blockers. If an ad is obnoxious (auto loud video ads) I simple don't go back to the site. In fact I tend to browse the web with my sound muted, just in case. I don't understand how people think they are so entitled, or why they can't put one and one together to make two. Everything has to be paid for one way or another.

That's one of the concerns, and what has previously put a halt on the idea. Still I think it's worth revisiting to see the progress.

Thats been my experience. I've tried and used Fedora and Ubuntu and most recently Pop!OS and while the level of tinkering has decreased it just doesn't work as well as windows or macOS. The biggest nut for me however is apps, or lack there of. One of my must have apps does not have a linux version and I have to use that exact application.

Well I was enjoying being a MacBook Pro user, until the damn thing died on me a few days ago and is going to cost a few hundred to fix, which I am currently debating on, considering it is almost 5yrs old. I am now on the look out for a lightweight 2 in 1 for my photo editing when away from home.

Don’t get me wrong I use my iPad Pro for most things, but cannot get to grips with Affinity and the results from Affinity are no where near as good or speedy as what I get from portrait professional. Nor can it run the DJ mixing software which I need for my internet radio show. Yes the new iPad OS will be giving extra functionality like external drive support, but it is still nowhere near a laptop replacement. Also with no known release date for the full Photoshop on the iPad, I will be needing something sooner rather than later.

Who knows I may well get my MacBook Pro 2015 repaired later this year, but until then I will be going back to Windows for the time being.
