blaming a computer manufacture for espionage is like saying Weiss telescopes and rolex are made with criminal intent.
if i do purchase a hauwei, do that mean I'm gonna spy on my elder statemens, or they have a chip installed were they can spy only elder statemens?

Back to the original post....

Am I abandoning ship? No. Ironically this is due to Google and Microsoft.

With a PC I'm limited in how many platforms I can develop software for. But thanks to Android Studio, Visual Studio for Mac, Visual Studio Code, Docker, etc. I can develop in .NET Core or cross-platform JavaScript and create apps for ANY platform: Any desktop OS, Android and iOS, IoT, web, etc.

One development machine for ALL app creation is very convenient and ONLY Macs can do this.

i had to find and keep outlook available on a dell pc just now, took 5 minutes.
for the love of bill gutes, i had no idea how i found the program, but kept i seeing these things that said "manage" near a bunch of text that wow, what a weird experience, then i had to Pin the forsaken thing.
jumping ship means foe ME means I should find another hobby or way to past time instead of this computing stuff.

China is not a normal country; their government is not a normal government. Without hyperbole, proliferate the Chinese State's influence at the risk of your and your children's future.

Maybe. But again: Hearsay, a lot of „ifs“ and „whens“ and „it is unclears“.

Let me put my moderator hat on, and just put it out there that we do not permit political posts outside of the PRSI, and there are number of posts that are dancing close to that line. Lets pull back on some of the discussion and focus back on the hardware and not the countries

There may be a limit that your bank imposes on debit cards.
Thats what i thought but No, apple did not want me buying a Chinese, ummmm other vicinity remote for my mac mini,
Because my new HBO now subscription went through instantly!
Go figure.....but winter is coming the whytewalkers are approaching, so i needed tp be prepared
Ramsey bolton would be a great whytewalker......

Ramsey Bolton is dog chow.

Sometimes credit cards are very specific about what address you use and it has to be the one that matches the bank's records. Sometimes sites such as Lenovo's ( I went through this with them) want to auto-suggest what they think the correct address should be and my card kept getting rejected. When I over-ruled it's auto-suggestion and manually added it, then it worked. That is one possibility.

The second is that of course, the monetary cost of an HBO subscription doesn't even begin to approach the price of a laptop, so Maflynn may also be correct, that the purchase is beyond the default daily limit of the card without calling for a pre-purchase authorization.

If you have to call the bank, give this a watch while on hold :)

I think Apple should drop and should be pulled from selling all news media because all the scandal including watergate, theranos, lancecarmstrong, iran contras, monika blewckinsky boston chalolic church and others imnot remembering now, were uncovered by independent media. Imagine if these cases were covered up by a big business or a swarming company like apple?
This is not political but reason others should jump ship including media companies.

For people who are frustrated, I recommend trying linux.

I've been a long term linux user (since 1995) and my desktop gaming PC runs it.

But if you're in "the ecosystem" linux is a non-starter for general computing.

Nothing syncs to the watch, the phone, the homepod, homekit, etc.

Only frustrating thing for me is the keyboard, other than that the Mac line up is fine for me.

I only upgrade every 3/5 years, I'm curious about an upcoming redesign thou but I'll keep waiting to see where the whole ARM/intel business is going first before upgrading.

How many times and for how many years do people say they're waiting for the upcoming redesign. These will not be redesigned for at least 2 years. Apple has shown its commitment to this design pattern with the new Retina MacBook Air last year, using the same crap keyboard as the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

Apple has to consider many factors before they can just change a design. In this case, they have their new suite of laptops (MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air) all with the same design pattern and the software that goes with it (e.g., touchbar, Apple Pay, T1 chip, etc.). They're locked into this for a while. In a few years, maybe... maybe, they'll redesign, but given how long the past designs have lasted, that might even be too optimistic.

This is why just last week, after being sick and tired of my 2017 MBP's crap keyboard, I bought two new 2015 MacBook Pros and upgraded them and am typing on one of them now. Much much better. While the computer is not as fast, it's decent and I now do some serious work on it. I have the force touch trackpad, fast SSD, Retina screen, etc.

I've been a Linux user since 1992 and I quit Linux when I had to start using mainstream applications for work. Linux is brilliant in specific cases where it's managed tightly, like ProxMox or Android. For general computing, as you say, it's limited because of app support.

I'm just getting into the Apple ecosystem (having bought an iPad Pro) and it's actually an eye-opener. I used to have to remember the web pages I opened but didn't have time to read, to then find those pages back on my phone on the train home. Now, I just leave them open on my mac and open them on my iPad. It more or less works in a similar way in Chrome, but with Apple, it's all much smoother.

Makes sense, I do love this new design besides the display bezels.

I'm curious to see what comes next, and who knows I might upgrade in 3 years.

Well a few pages back I said I had moved to a Dell XPS 13 for the time being. I have lasted about 4 to 5 months up until now but sorely tempted to just bite the bullet and get a 13" MBP (can't decide 512GB or 1TB) with AppleCare and sell with some AppleCare left in maybe 2 years time.

Just too much friction in Windows, the day to day apps for mail etc and interaction with the OS are slowly annoying me to death....it will sound stupid but I just don't feel any joy at all using this machine <sigh> I guess that is why the current state of keyboards etc is so upsetting.

 wanted to hear my experience at their store Saturday, so i typed a 447 word document explains how the place is comparable to any DMV located in new jersey.
i hope  don't make cars.....

same here, windows is too "block" and way too much nonsence text as in outlook or word, which is microsoft, but the OS is bland and boring, for me.
but  software, new MacBooks and sales is now horrendous for me, i might jump off the computing ship.
i can save a lot of money, like $1500 i budgeted this year to invest for my work.

My 2009 MacBook Pro needed replacing and then the iPad Pro got released. I went all-in and bought it with the pencil and keyboardcover. Must say that I've had no regrets so far.
Only thing I'd love to see is support for the Magic Mouse and/or Magic Trackpad. On the go they aren't needed, but when working at a desk, it would be a lot easier. If iOS13 would bring this feature, i'd be 100% content.

Agreed. I have been playing around with Linux for many years but despite loving it I have never been able to use it as my main daily driver. It simply lacks the apps you need for way too many things (no decent office suite, nothing legitimately good for photo and video editing, little to no games, and the list goes on). And almost nothing works out of the box. I like it a lot but there's no way I could go Linux-only.

It's great for development, scientific computing and nerdy tinkering in general, but for the majority of users it would be unapproachable as a general purpose OS. Too little software, too much low-level maintenance required.

The bottom line is, if you're not enjoying the experience, then don't stick with it. I have low expectations that we'll see anything major done with the keyboard this year, so I don't know what to say to that.

As for windows and software, I use outlook and that works very well, there's also other apps like postbox that provides a great experience. If your frustrations are due to using the built in email client, then branch out and find another app that is more flexible, and better at handling your needs.

I am currently using Mailbird and have tried lots including Outlook. I don't find Outlook's integration with Gmail particularly great, especially with the calendar side of things. I was highlighting that as an example I suppose. There are lots of niggles, image editing, resizing etc as well. That's super easy with Preview, bit of a nightmare in Windows.

All are solvable, I just have to decide whether these are problems worth spending money on. The current line up is cleverly set up as well, as soon as I get to a 13" which I would like, I think I should get 1TB and then I am in shouting distance of a 15"...which is less portable...etc etc.

I feel ya - I proudly boasted to my friends that I’ve finally moved away from Apple (cause frankly, I’ve really grown to dislike Apple as a company). That was last September. I’ve used my Surface Book 2 since then and just a few days ago bought a 2018 MacBook Pro. There’s nothing wrong with the SB2 - great keyboard, very good touchpad (there, I said it), fantastic pen input etc. But Windows oh well - I don’t mind working on it, I’m quite efficient and had zero issues really, no crashes and zippy speeds, but there’s no joy using it. It’s like driving a Chevy Cruze. It’s does the trick, looks ok but there aren’t many people who are truly passionate about a Cruze.

I’ll miss the SB2’s input options, but I’m at a point where I’m willing to sacrifice that. An Intuos tablet and an iPad will have to do for the work I’ve been doing with the pen.
