I am in the same position, I saw this on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-Mat...ook+pro&qid=1557667363&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spell

The spec on that for 1,249... There is also one for 200 less which I am thinking would be just fine.

Yes me too - I was looking at this listing that puts the Matebook on top of the pack at present. Thing is, if we buy it will the Chinese be watching our every move?

Of course people will switch, if the performance is great. macOS is worth it, Windows doesn’t come close for a lot of people (yes, pros, depends on your field and needs) and only people who want to justify their Windows laptop purchases claim that Apple is giving up on pro users. No, the type of “pro” user that

MacOs is just tool. It's not any better than Windows or Linux. It is just different. I use all 3 daily. I think you expect more allegiance to MacOs than really exists. Sure there is a small hard core following that will buy anything Apple produces. Most people are going to base it on quality and price.

Simply put, if you want a PC, nothing will beat a PC. Don’t expect a Mac to focus on the same things. If you want a Mac, for the reasons that make a Mac great, a great ARM cpu will be a benefit.

Right now we don't know if that is true. Apple has a big hump to get over to compete with Intel. They may be able to over time but right now it is just wishful thinking and vapor ware. It's all rainbows and unicorns until they come out with something competitive that sells and has the software people want.

Intel also recently got rid of the CEO that liked getting on TV and thought IoT was the future of the company while their CPU development went unfocused and was not a priority. We'll see if that has any impact in the future.

You’re right - we don’t know anything. But I am expecting it, because Apple’s CPU team has been nailing it for the past few years. Their performance per watt has been amazing. You have to be biased not to expect it, tbh.

And yes, macOS is just a tool. For my work, it is - by far - the best tool available. And yes, it is “just different” as you say, but it is just different in ways that are better for me. And I’ve been using all three, as well and I use Windows daily.

A great CPU in a substandard package is still a substandard computer. That was snarky, but their hardware has been lacking lately. I hope the new MacPro lives up to the hype, but I'm not looking forward to a module based computer. Just let me buy my own third party components dammit.

Apple was never about that, so I think a PC is better for you.

As for substandard package, I only agree for the keyboard. That is trully a critical problem. But, everything else is really good. So, I am cautiously optimistic.

If only this was the case, but the T2/BridgeOS crashes and Spotlighting displays also need fixing.

People are expecting too much from it and will be very disappointed. There is no way Apple is going to offer a base system that you buy and then upgrade from all 3rd party components, no way will they lose that revenue stream, which means it is only going to suit the deepest of pockets.

I only agree for the keyboard.

The MBP has a lot more going on that just the keyboard though, as I noted above there are currently 3 repair programs form the MBP with the stage lighting issue likely to emerge as another in the 16/17 models.

Actually just moved to PC last month. Very happy so far.

And there are a lot of quality issues with the macs currently, from way too high CPU temps to dust collecting in iMac screens and T2 chips crashing the computers. I'm happy with something I can repair and replace as needed.

This is my opinion, far too much vanity with Apple these days. For a company based on the user experience they are certainly putting on a poor show. Since the 2016 MBP launched it's been mostly downhill. Vast majority I know have switched due to Apple's apathy thx to going from arguably it's best notebook line to it's worst.

A premium price commands a premium product, not something one needs to be worried about basic reliability and usability. A product labelled for professional use more so, sacrificing reliability, performance and usability just for the sake of a few mm and grams is little more than a joke, unacceptable and an insult to many who once relied on the Mac...

I just jumped ship last week, while iOS, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch are still best in class, 2016+ MBP is hot garbage. Both my brothers late 2016 15 MBP and my late 2016 13 MBP have had nothing but issues. Between us we have had random keys on the keyboard fail, a weird loose object inside the 15 inch mbp that Apple tried 3 times to diagnose and couldn’t, graphics issues on the 13 inch that ended up being software, and just general slowness. I’ve had an Apple laptop since starting college in 2005, and other than a few short forays into Microsoft land with surface pro, I’ve been consistent with Apple. I’m done, I have 9 months of AppleCare left, three or 4 keys on the 13 inch MBP are clicking now instead of smoothly pressing down, and I’m tired of replacements. I sold the computer, for about half it’s value after 3 years.... they still keep value! Picked up a mid power Thinkpad T490 with next day replacement and accident protection and I’m going back to Windows. The old Apple with solid computer hardware is gone.

iPhone is still amazing, and so is iPad, but the screen on iPhone used to be more scratch resistant, having owned every iPhone ever made since the 3G, I definitely noticed that...

I jumped ship around 2016 onto a thinkpad+ubuntu and then dell precision with ubuntu preloaded. I never looked back.
I am a programmer so I spend most time with cli+vim, hence keyboard comfort and reliability are tantamount to my career survival.

Agree, I have never found anything that beats the iPad on all the important elements such as performance, battery and updates. Although, unless Apple gives me a compelling reason to stay the next time I am looking for a phone then I will jump off that boat.

I am not paying $1k for a phone again. That is not about me affording it or not liking the iPhone, I can't justify the price in my own mind for what I use a phone for. I could have went for the Xr but found it too big.

As much as I detest Google practices, I do like Android. My privacy is not worth $1k :p

This is my issue, not so much the value it offers, Apple has systematically stripped the value from the Mac. The asking price is ludicrous for what we now get as an end user, with near zero effort put in by Apple as it soaks up the profits from other lines and services.

We are talking in the realms of double the price for less reliability, usability and performance over a counterpart PC notebook. Personally I seriously question a product that has such a premium, yet fails to hold up on multiple levels...

That is good, and it’s nice you found what you like. Don’t know why you came to a Mac forum to say you prefer PCs, but ok, weird flex.

Oh cmon now, he said he just moved last month. So as soon as you move to a PC you are not allowed an opinion on MR any more, even in a thread about abandoning the good ship Apple. Have a word with yourself, in an empty room.

With rubber walls :p Some forget this is a community, not an elitist fan club. If more questioned Apple then there might not be so much discord. There's clearly issues with the Mac like it or loath it...

Spot on about the discord. Abandoning ship doesn’t have to necessarily mean leaving Mac forever. I think a lot of folks who have left or are thinking about leaving still remain in the community, keeping an ear to the ground to see if Apple reverses ship and releases a shinny new Mac Pro righting all the wrongs of the previous one and hopefully a heavily updated MacBook Pro in the near future....

... the amazing newly updated Mac Pro is still coming right? The AirPower debacle has left me not 100% sure

This years WWDC will be make or break for me, whether I will be buying PC hardware for the first time in about 15 years.
This would be for business only however, so will still stay with Macs for personal use and still be here :)

I can get a HP Zbook workstation that is better than the MBP in specs and is nearly half the price. When saving $3k per machine it sort of becomes a no brainer.

Probably for the same reason a mac fan is in an abandoning mac thread ;) I'm a long time apple fan, who has left the family, but I'm still active in the forum. I enjoy helping people, debating various topics and interacting in various threads.

This years WWDC will be make or break for me,
That was me last year, and I bought into apple hook line and sinker, I totally thought they fixed the keyboard. Then we had the throttling issues (which was fixed fairly quickly), and then T2 crashes (which hasn't been fixed fairly quickly and seems to still affect people), coil whine, and speaker crackle. Oh and months after the fact reports start trickling in that the silicone membrane did not prevent the keyboard failures.

I'm happy with the 13" TB but want to upgrade to a 15" come next... I'm also waiting on Navi GPUs from AMD.. I love playing World of Warcraft and would like to have a decent GPU to play it a bit while I'm travelling around.

Because, believe it or not, it's not a war.

I use Macs AND Window's machines. I did so before when my Mac was my main computer and I do it now that a Windows machine is my main computer. It's not either/or. The days of the Rebel forces of Apple against the evil empire of Microsoft are over. Now they are both empires. YMMV on how evil either of them are at this point, but Apple is in no way an underdog anymore. And I hope that Apple gets its act together so that my next main computer will be a Mac, but time will tell.

THIS

Excellent post!!!

Also, temporarily "abandoning" Mac doesn't mean abandoning Apple altogether. Some of us still have iPhones, iPads, etc.

Lenovo is having a sale next week for employees where I work and the savings are substantial. The one I spec'd out is 17.3 inches and is one of those models where you can put up to 128 GB of RAM, 2 NVM SSDs and 2 additional SSDs or HDDs. You can buy it as a base and add the other hardware as you need it and the price is very attractive. There are a number of companies offering this kind of laptop and Apple really does have to do something to respond; otherwise, they will be left in the dust. Even the 2018 Mac Mini pales in comparison. This 17 inch, like most of the others out there, offers a 4K display. I'm using 2560x1600 resolution on my MacBook Pro right now so 4K on a 17 inch would be usable for me.

In the 20 years, I have used Mac, I have always had a PC as well. Who would imagine that people would use both! Clearly many on this forum didn't consider that to be an option...

I have used Windows going back many decades and Mac starting around 2004 but I also used the Apple 2, Lisa and the original Mac and Mac+ I think. Those old 68000 machines. I've also used a bunch of other operating systems. I was hoping to get off and stay off of Windows with my two 15 inch MBPs but it may be more efficient to go with a Mac and a Windows if Apple doesn't get on the ball. There's a lot of convenience stuff on macOS related to iCloud and a few other things. But it's increasingly difficult to get performance out of their hardware without spending a fortune and dealing with hardware issues.
