Just priced up the new 15” MacBook Pro, £3374...!!!! That’s because I’d want the best GPU option which isn’t even that great, but for that you must get the 8 core model as it’s the only one with GPU options, and you have to add 32GB RAM of course as thanks to apple it’s all soldered on..
That’s a frankly ridiculously laughable price for a machine with a flawed keyboard out of the box that even apple expects to break at some point! Oh and it’ll probably thermal throttle..

They’ve priced me out of the new Mac laptop market permanently now.

Look at the new ASUS laptops announced at computex, i9 processors and Nvidia RTX graphics with that dual screen design, yeah it looks daft but I bet it doesn’t cost £3374!!

To put it another way, £3307 gets you a Thinkpad X1 Extreme with 64Gb RAM, Two 1Tb SSDs, 1050Ti 4Gb, a 4k screen and a keyboard that works.

I would love to know from someone visiting us here from the future, if the OLEDs the manufacturers will put into all the notebooks, are worth the money. Or if they will suffer from burn in like crazy and drive me mad.

Something like the new XPS 15 or X1E with an OLED are really tempting...

curious specifics of how you feel it is inferior ?
and not saying for you its not :) just curious
specific things finder can not do or has that windows does/has
I will say that the quick preview is an awesome feature, no question, its something that I miss and I don't hate the Finder as I've used Macs for what feels like eons

Some of what I say below may be personal preference and/or opinion. In no particular order.
  • Hierarchical view is better in file explorer. I find it much easier to navigate up/down a directory tree.
  • Easier copying/moving files/directories
  • Keyboard shortcuts are more robust
  • Working with network resources is easier
  • Managing shares, permissions is easier to deal with File explorer
  • Sorting, I've always liked seeing directories sorted at the top
  • Drive letters, I'm sure I'll be tar'd and feathered, but assigning a drive letter to a network resource/external drive is more efficient imo
  • Searching, I've always had issues with this on the mac, I usually got more files that didn't seem to match or a bunch of plist type files. I needed to use a third party app like Easy Find.
I'm not trying to dump on the Finder, but I do think for how I use my home PC, work computers and manage server resources, files directories the file explorer handles the tasks better.

I'm old, and in back in the day the monitors we had instead of LCDs all suffered from burnin, hence the cottage industry of screen savers. I'd say there are things you can do to minimize the risk and hopefully manufacturers have implemented features as well. Google, Samsung, and Apple all have technology built into their phones to avoid burn in (as much as possible), those things ought to be in laptop displays - I have no idea if they are, but I would hope.

Something like the new XPS 15 or X1E with an OLED are really tempting...
I avoid being on the bleeding edge, and in many ways have I no desire to adopt OLED, I'm very happy with LCD and don't see the upside. In any case, patience is probably a better approach, let others be on the bleeding edge

I didn't realize how much I missed using a good keyboard! I've been looking around again and have landed back on the Dell XPS line. But I can't bring myself to jump ship on a year old computer :D.
i am extremely happy sailing on the windows ship using a Dell XPS 9380 now. I would buy one now since Dell and other companies will most likely use the new intel10 chips the price of an XPS will escalate and who knows the effect of these new import tariffs i dont see the prices staying the same.

the grass on this side of the knoll isn't always greener.

the apple does not fall far from the tree!
it gets encased with logins, blocks certain software and cannot be eaten fruitfully because of the stubbornness of the tree!

I see Alienware have updated their laptops at computex too, nice too with a bit more of a subtle design, but oodles of power, however I don’t think they are offering 8 core chips in the 15”? Then again a model with a 6 core i9 latest gem and an ETX 2080 with 8GB ram and SSD plus 4K OLED screen costs a bit less then the MacBook Pro I specced out.

I tried out a Dell XPS 13 (9380), and it was nice in some ways. The sound/speakers were terrible, and it had noticeable coil whine when 100% charged and plugged in. On a lesser knock, I found the 16:9 screen to be sort of annoying.

I LOVED the power adapter and the small bezels.

Overall, I ended up going with a Surface Laptop 2, which only negative for me was lack of repairability. Just hoping it turns out well. The keyboard is awesome. The screen is very good. The speakers are about the same quality as the retina MBA that I had.

I’ll say this, it made me super stressed looking at windows PCs because of how many there are out there. I’m used to getting a MacBook or MacBook Air.

my dell xps never coiled, i was watching a movie and heard a car sound go from the left to right speaker and Mozart was clearer than the mbair. the 9380 has a thermal gortex to insulate the heat which seems to work.
my only complaint is streaming mirroring on a 720dpi samsung were i might get a 4k tv.

I just had a look at a few articles on new systems at Computex. Not a fan of the Dell XPS look. I don't like the color (white) and the USB-C only ports. If I had to buy a new system, I'd go with more of a mobile workstation.

Yeah, the problem is there isn't anything else which runs macOS. Windows does more damage to the user experience than a flawed keyboard.

My work laptop is a Dell with a better keyboard but it's still a piece of trash because it's a Dell and it runs windows. I tried to jump to an XPS at home and it's a pig with makeup.

It sucks there are so few options right now.

Dell 7390 with Ubuntu preinstalled looks interesting to me. Which model you have at work?

You know there are preferences and preferences. I prefer Windows and it's power. I don't understand why someone has to knock on one system in order to justify and preferring the other. Windows is not "trash" just because you don't appreciate it. Stick with Mac... Let Apple mistreat and overcharge you. This is what happens when you back yourself into a corner by refusing to acknowledge alternatives. Apple has you right where they want you... Good luck.

I admit I’m starting to think about it. I love MacOS but I can’t justify over $4000 AUD for the MacBook Pro I want. If only Apple would allow MacOS on third party devices :(. The only thing stopping me is my virtual machine with Parallels and how to move it to Windows.

Well if you hate anything that is non-macOS, then yes you have few options. It doesn't suck because quite simply, you yourself of refusing to embrace alternatives. Windows does not turn laptops in trash, but if you hate the OS to such a high degree (and everyone is entitled to their opinion) then you really have no other option. You're an apple customer that apple loves, you may not be happy with the price or quality but you'll keep buying it. I'm not knocking you, its you're money, your decision. You're the one who has to be happy with the decision.

I've stated my opinion numerous times here and elsewhere, Both operating systems have positives and negatives, but to say that windows is trash is myopic is reminiscent of the silly platform wars of years past and lacks a full depth of reasoning of what the OS can do. You may not like what Windows brings to the table and its short comings may impact you more then another, but that doesn't make it trash. The same exact thing could be said with macOS.

If you're unwilling or unable to switch, even if you hate the hardware then you are stuck no matter what apple does ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I run Windows XP for old legacy games like SimCity 4 (The best SimCity IMO can't believe it's almost 20 yrs old I was only 7 when it came out) I've looked up solutions on Google but no one can give me a straight answer. I run some Games via Steam on Mac as well but I wonder if they would run better on Windows 10?

Yes, games run much better on a PC then a Mac and you have more options. I just looked on steam and they do have Sim city Deluxe

They definitely need to get some Navi chips asap on the MacBook Pro models. it's ridiculous how much they are asking for such underperforming GPUs.

i am 100% surprised i'm running windows and using a Dell XPS now, i detested windows like a toothache!
Computing is much different now, Microsoft either listens to what consumers want or just developed a great operating system that is very flexible and responsive. This is not your dad's windows we are chatting about, the experience is much freer with less infections.

Just to think if the salejerks at the store were an ounce nicer and not rude towards me, i would be typing on 2017 MBAir i planned to purchase in mid-march.

Why? What are you doing that would require a mobile workstation?

I'm surprised that more manufacturers are not going all in on USB-C but I think they saw the blow back from apple and took a slower approach. Adoption is slower but we'll be seeing more usb-c only machines. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that my laptop has usb 3.1

don't be surprised if you'd end up wishing that sh** keyboards were the least of your problems.

Ok, but, to be honest, if my keyboard breaks, the rest of it is not much use with keys that don't work. Maybe it's just me but I would never wish for that. :D

Of course any Windows laptop can suffer faults just like any mac, but one can be significantly more repairable, the other, not so much.
