i was up at midnight (BST) on the 20th hitting refresh on the apple store

the store came back online for me at about 12:02 and dispatch time was already 7-10 days!!

just checked UPS and its sitting in Germany hopefully due for delivery on wednesday

i'm confused why apple didn't have a bucket load of them sitting in UK depots waiting for immediate dispatch... or if they did they must have only had about 12 because i couldnt have ordered mine any quicker!!

bring on wednesday!!

It really does not matter how many phones they sold, the bottom line is, it just was not enough. Maybe they should rethink putting out a new iPhone every single year. Because of the demand, maybe they should take a year to develop and a year to produce, then release. Those maybe exaggerated times but clearly they can't go from concept to production in 1 year and have enough for launch. Just my 2 cents.:)

Also, it's no need to flame people here, everyone is different, some are happy waiting on apple till the aliens come back, some are not.

Sounds like my situation except I'm in Canada and my phone is in China. Wednesday at noon for me. I think I got in at 12:03 AM PT and out at 12:05 and had 7-10. Wednesday is day 8 so within range. I think it was only the US that got them any sooner.

They probably don't go from design to concept in one year

They are probably just about to start working on concepts and technologies for the 6s with hard work already going on with finalising designs for the 6 (assuming 2014 brings us the 6 and 2015 brings us the 6s) you get my drift though

but yes, i think they should give themselves more time to get enough product on shelf!

however they probably don't care, because everyone who want one, will get one with 28 days of launch, no matter how many they ship ready for launch day there will always be demand for it so it probably doesn't bother them if people have to wait 4 working weeks for one!

probably because they wern't ready to start production 2 months earlier? It's not like the 5S has been complete and ready to go for a year....

And delaying the release by one month would have the same effect of people waiting, just more people getting it on launch day.

It would of made the smallest difference but still a difference in waiting times for the rest of us. Also 2 months ahead of launch isn't that bad. They knew what their product design externally and internally was going to be well ahead of the launch.

Today marks the 1 week anniversary since ordering my Gold 5s. Here's hoping that by this time next week, that phone will be in my hands!

If you wanted it fast you should have done whatever it took to get it fast instead doing nothing and whining about it. I woke up at 250 am to prepare myself to put an order in right at 3:00am. It worked and I got the iPhone on the 25th of September.

Not everyone has $700-$900 to blow on a phone without getting a contract. Apple online store only offers bell and AT&T I do believe.

What do I have to reread? I got your point exactly, you are the one who doesn't know what he is talking bout. Just twisting your words however fits you best.

So show me what I supposedly got wrong. Not that it is all written down.

I'm not a fricking archeologist okay?
Look it up.
I never said anything about a random number generator. I just think that if a customer ordered a phone within the first 24 hours of it coming out, they should probably get their phone before someone who just found out about the existence of cellphones today and decided to buy one.
Person who paid first, gets product first. No cuts.
If that means apple has to short vendors and retailers then they should.
It is silly that Apple is telling people who ordered within the first day and a half that they wil get a phone in October.

This is exactly right! If you want one early on in the release, a little planning goes a long way. Get up, place order online, go to the store and have fun waiting in line with everyone (I actually enjoy the experience!). Do whatever it takes and you will own one early every time...I have never missed!

Well some of us are grown ups that can't wait in line because we have full time jobs. 60+ hours a week here.

Personally I think Apple engineers this scenario deliberately every year. They certainly have a clue to how many current iphone users there are with phones older than a 5.

I generally avoid purchasing anytime near a launch date. I'd rather get the product after the kinks are ironed out. But this year my phone is really beat up. It's taken a few drops and such.

I might try this on my lunch today. Maybe the Union Square Apple store has chilled out?

I'd avoid SF at all costs...but I know Stanford Mall, University Ave (also Palo Alto) and Valley Fair (Santa Clara) all have plenty of Space Grays and all colors of 5S in stock

Sheeez
our receptionist went out and got herself a 16gb silver 5s yesterday.
She says there were two guys in the line in front of her who bought 5 phones each.

I'm not sure which is more annoying, that someone can waltz into a store and get a phone faster than someone who placed an order last week, or the scalper action that Apple is doing NOTHING about.

I hate to say it but this is making me reconsider my plans for picking up and the new ipad and mac pro as well.
Not that I expect Tim Cook to read my forum posts and change the direction of his company or anything. But lets just say I am exploring other options now.

Pfft, ordered it Saturday afternoon (9/21) from VZW with an initial estimated shipping date of 10/21 and eventually 10/7. Checked a couple of days ago and saw some estimates saying not until November

don't take it too hard, the stock holders are saying there word.

Waiting sucks

I received my confirmation email at 00:15 on the 20th. Finally moved out of "processing" last night. It'll probably be another week to land on my door. But we have to remember they are building and shipping, often right to our doorstep, 10 million or more phones.
The "October" date ( designed to lower expectations and not set unmet able goals) is way too vague. And it seems like they sent a lot of phones to the brick and mortars over meeting orders made in the first few minutes. I get why they do these things and it's all a balancing act. But I also know people waiting weeks or maybe a month for their new phone can get annoyed at these "marketing decisions".
At the end of the day, they probably handle this crush of new orders better than any other company. And the new hardware makes it impossible to make them all ahead of time. I'm impatient, but more realistic than I was last week. And if I still saw "processing" instead of "preparing for shipment" I would probably be a little more antagonistic toward Apple right now, like many exasperated posters on here.
Hang in there, I hope we all get our phones "on time", however vague that promise might be.

I'd be much more aggravated if I had ordered as early as you and was still iphone-less.

For what it's worth it seems like folks are getting expedited shipping for back ordered phones. So maybe you will see that sooner than you think.

I am really losing my patience. It isn't that I'm a prima donna, I just hate situations where there is no recourse.

My wife pretty much gave up and canceled her order. She instead just brought another phone for $425.00 and keeps her upgrade for another time. My wife just wanted a phone to use that was somewhat new and didn't need to waste her time on waiting for a iPhone. Apple always loses a sale to people like her and she waits once again till next year about this time to see if she will purchase her first ever iPhone. She won't buy a new phone twice in a year even if she has an upgrade. :D

sad to say but I doubt apple cares. my fiancé is in the same boat, her first iPhone leaving android and we've been waiting since launch day for it to arrive.

This thread is just a load of 1st world problems. Like them truly awful 'real housewives' shows.

If one chooses to buy during any iPhone launch period, waiting is to be expected.

I think it's a little harder to swallow for those of us who aren't used to waiting during launches, though. I've had every iPhone since the 3GS, and have received them all on launch day. Lined up at AT&T in 2009, at Apple in 2010, and preordered from Apple in 2011 and 2012. Always received the phones exactly when I planned to; i know how to play the game, and i played it the same way this time around with a vastly different result, which is what makes this a tad irritating. That's all. :)
