While I ordered a new iPad for myself, I did take advantage of the price drop to order my wife an iPad 2. She will probably use it sparingly so it should be fine. She's not really a techie. Now she might look at mine and say "Hey" but the plan all along was for me to get a new one when they came out. She wasn't even included:D

I'm sure she will enjoy it either way!!

Kind of wish I had read the writing on the wall and not made this thread now. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and opinions; let's let this thread die so I can maintain whatever dignity I have left. I appreciate some of you and your enthusiasm for the new iPad, which I do not share but am glad for you, and hope you enjoy your new gadgets very much.

Dont let this people influence your choice. I honestly think when its all said and done you will get the last laugh and if not then who cares? Not me. Im happy with my purchase!

Roger that Pete.... Sorry dude. I think you're making a mistake though.

Sleep on it. Look at some comparison shots at the Verge if need be.

Solitaire will look sooooo much better. Plus, waaaaay better resale a year or so from now.

Truly pains me to think of someone buying the iPad2 now. My girlfriend bought one 3 months ago and is already ditching that for the new one. She's not a techie, but even she knows what a massive upgrade this will be.

Good luck!

Reading is one of the biggest reasons I am upgrading to the new iPad. Not that the iPad 2's screen is bad, but text is noticeably blurry when reading ebooks with it and at times it caused strain to my eyes during long reading sessions. Again, these are minor complains, but nonetheless I am looking forward to reading from a screen that is much more crisp.

Not I. For $100 more I'd rather get double the resolution.

+1... Seems like a no brainer to me.

That improvement ALONE is worth the extra $100, let alone all the other improvements with The New iPad. Once you see the new screen you will not want to go back. it is a HUGE upgrade.

After reading all these comments, it makes me wonder why Apple hasn't recalled the iPad 2 yet, clearly it's an embarrassing POS...the OP sounds like a smart and informed consumer, who only has simple, basic needs and knows what those needs are...buying 2048 X 1536 for the sake of buying 2048 X 1536 is stupid...but, but its 2048 X 1536!!!!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Don't. Do it.

In OP's defense, he has 14 days to return/exchange it for the new one, if he does indeed end getting blown away by the new one's resolution!!

In a way, it's a good thing that the OP will be able to compare the two and then decide, if he's even slightly swayed by all the persuasion here :p

I, too, think skipping the iPad 2 for the new one is a wise decision, especially given the mere $100 price difference. I'd imagine, it'll be a lot easier to read/see with the higher resolution, resulting in less eye fatigue. For that reason alone, it's worth an extra $100.

However, ultimately, it's the OP's decision and I wish him all the best with the new purchase. The iPad 2 is definitely a great device!! :)

Just got one!

Just got an iPad 2 this week - my first iPad. I'm not fussed about retina and the 2's thinner and lighter:D

When I look at comparison shots they look the same. Of course they do: I'm not looking at the shots on a screen that's got a high enough resolution!

Most people have been satisfied with the iPad resolution for the last two years, enjoy it, it's still a good model.

I mean, I'm happy for the OP, but I am just going to throw my opinion into the hat too and say, for If you're spending all that money, spend the extra $100 and get the new iPad. The screen is going to be awesome.

I'm going to get the Apple Newton 110 this week. Maybe next year, I'll get the Newton 120. I should make my way to the iPad 1 by the time I'm elderly.

I believe the new iPad has a better processor and more RAM as well. That should make a difference to the user experience.

That said, I am still pretty happy with my 64 Gig 3g iPad 1. I will see what happens when I actually get a chance to play with the new iPad. Or maybe I should avoid doing so. Comparing the iPhone 4 with my 2nd gen iPod Touch and I can't believe I did not notice how awful the display was on the pre-retina display!

It seemed so nice when I purchased it...;:)

don't think I ever tried to "convince" you of anything, just pointed out that anyone thinking of getting Ipad 2 due to $100 price difference should factor in resale value into their value analysis. Since other people might read this thread who are trying to decide between Ipad 2 and new ipad, I think it's a valid point.

Many, many people upgrade their ipads via resale each year, not all which is why I said it's a moot point if anyone hands it down as you also seem to do.

Like I said, i didn't try to convince you, i doesn't matter to me what Ipad you get, I don't work for Apple.

Absolutely. I'm one of them. Thanks for the input.

I just sold my first gen and picked up a iPad 2 32, as well as ordered a iPad 3. Going to return one as soon as the new one comes in. The iPad 2 is a nice upgrade from the 1. Faster and thinner. Not sure if I need the higher res display.

I got the iPad 2 for my dad. He mostly needs some way to check his e-mail when he is out on the job site. He is in construction so he is not home most of the day but clients e-mail him and it is hard for him to see the small screen on his iphone. I didn't see the need to upgrade him to the new ipad because of the simplicity of the services he will use. Me on the other hand have ordered the 32gb 4gLTE to be delivered Friday.

Major mistake in going with the iPad 2. The $100 premium will be well worth it when you see that screen. Everything you do on the iPad involves the screen.

I just don't really understand it when people say the screen isn't that important to them. On a tablet, its probably the most important piece.

Some people on these forums are complaining about DIE SHRINK NUMBERS! Wahhhhh it's 42 NANOMETERS instead of 28 NANOMETERS!!!! I'm not going to get it because of a number i can't see, nevermind the doubled resolution that will effect my user experience ever second i use the ipad.....

I'm one that will not tell you that the New iPad is a better buy for the long term. I will only say this.....

Don't come back here and say you made a mistake later after all the feed back

;)

I got a 2!!!

I just got a iPad 2 16g wifi refurbished and I LOVE it... I don't need the latest and greatest thing and I wont be jealous if someone sits next to me with a iPad 3 ;-)... I got it for my kids (one has autism and the other dyslexia) but now I don't want to give it up! Guess I'll be grabbing another one for myself. Better hurry though... the white 16g is already gone. They only have black ones left ...

Got the iPad 2 on 3/8 for my wife. She uses it in class with her students so it doesn't make a difference with regard to resolution, 5X chip, camera, etc. We're also going to keep our original iPad so she's got two in class. With a couple of styli the grammar school kids love it. The majority of her students don't have it (and their families probably don't have the means to buy it) so it's a great thing for them.

I'm glad this thread was started. Different people do different things for different reasons and in the end most of the time we realize we did the right thing for our situation (most....not all....of the time. :D:D:D )

Pete: I'd say hold off for a week, then go into a store and compare the old + new ones. Load up a website + an ebook on each, take a look at the difference.

Reason I'm saying that is that I have an iPhone 3GS and a 4S, and read quite a lot of websites + books on my phone. The difference a retina screen makes really is pretty big for these particular tasks - I really wouldn't want to go back to the 3GS screen for reading now. The other updates won't be of much interest to you, but the screen might well be worth $100 extra.
