The resolution really doesn't intrigue me all that much. Nor do the upgraded graphics capabilities; when I play a game on my iPad it's solitaire 95% of the time, and sometimes I'll load up a game of Monopoly if I'm stuck for something else to do. Other than that I'm reading, either websites, iBooks, or Feeddler. The current resolution of my iPad for those tasks has been fine for me. :)

You saying the retina displays doesn't interest you but yet you mostly read, websites, iBooks and feedler ........ AND THE RETINA DISPLAY DOESN'T INTEREST YOU???

Ummmmmm OK

So if I don't conform to your way of thinking and buying...what? I'm lying? What is the point that you're making?

Enjoy your new iPad, I am enjoying mine immensely so far.

I will stand in solidarity with Pete and say I'm eagerly waiting for my refurb 16GB wifi to arrive on Thursday or Friday.

I got a Nano 16GB which I didn't want as a gift at work so was able to exchange that, sell my iPad 1 to eBay for $200, and basically upgrade a generation for $20 tax.

It's tough, I want the latest too, but I don't have much disposable income. Someday! I'm excited for the improvement over iPad 1.

Ohhh good lord nevermind ... strain your eyes for all I care I guess ... just trying to point out that you of all people and the ones who read etc. with their iPads should be REALLY interested in the The New iPad ... but to each his own. You will when you can afford it I guess. :D

Grats on your new iPad Pete. Don't let anyone discourage you, there is still plenty of life left in the iPad 2 and everyone has different needs. Last year my hubby purchased an iPad 1 for me, the same day the iPad 2 came out. While its not as fast or as updated, it still has a lot of miles left in it. I did order an iPad 3 for the ram upgrade mainly, but I will be passing down my old iPad to a family member who can not afford gadgets... Enjoy your new device.

Lol, thanks brother. I will tell you, coming from an iPad 1, I am already super impressed with this upgrade. It's incredible how fast it is compared to the oldest generation model I've been using happily for two years now.

I genuinely hope everyone loves their iPad 3s, and will gladly be there to buy your gently used tablets in a year when you have to upgrade to the latest and greatest. :D

I got an iPad 2 past week... To be exact I got it this past saturday and I got it for $100 less.. Nice!!

Im very happy with it. I know the new ipad was coming out this week but for me the ipad 2 is good enough.

I understand not wanting to upgrade. I wouldn't have if it didn't have a retina display. But how can someone say it's not an impressive screen. I just don't get it. It's going to be gorgeous.

I never said it wasn't impressive; I've never seen it. I just know me, and that kind of thing has never been a huge motivator for me. I'm sure its beautiful, but it certainly doesn't make me want to run out an buy one by itself.

I know it will be a gorgeous display, and I will ogle it every chance I get. :) but for my budget, I'm happy to get a faster iPad with Facetime. I use GarageBand a lot which is pretty laggy on the iPad 1. Looking forward to that running better.

I'm getting an iPad 2 but I don't think it's the reason you are looking for and I won't be getting it this week.

My mom is upgrading her iPad 2 to the new iPad so I'm benefitting by getting her old iPad 2 :). And I have to wait til I visit her in May to get it :( (But hey, free ipad :)! Which is awesome when you are on a tight budget and you just cannot find any justification for it and you can't really justify buying a random extra toy with no real use for you that you don't already have something that does that reasonably well).

I'd love the better screen and if I were buying one myself I'd just spend the extra for the better screen. But, the iPad 2 is still a good device and still is pretty relevant even if you are worried about still being compatible with new apps (and even games).

Me too!

Well actually she hired me to work for her a while ago and was gonna pay me(250$) but offered the ipad instead. YES PLEASE!

Nope! already sold my iPad 2 early last week!!!

if I were you, I'd definitely get the 3rd Generation iPad... I guarantee you'll regret your decision when you get to see the Retina Display up close plus the Quad Core Graphics!

One interesting detail I would like to share... Since I've been using the iPad I find the iPhone's screen so small.. Hahahaha

quick question for all the people giving the OP crap about not being wowed about the new retina display, did you people experience any diminished vision over the past 2 years as a result of viewing web pages and reading text on the Ipad1 and 2? TO him as he has repeatedly stated, it is not a huge deal and i cant honestly blame him for that. He shouldn't get crap for his decision.

OP i am in the same boat as you and considering getting a refurb 32gb Ipad2. I have the money for the new Ipad but until i go into the store and see the difference in the display between both, i wont jump on this bandwagon based on what no one here has experienced for themselves. I haven't really had a need for an ipad anyway all this while so i can live without the latest model if it really isn't miles better than the ipad2.

You must be practically blind considering all the eye strain you suffered using your recently departed ipad1. :)

My iPhone 4 has the retina display and a friend of mine has the iPhone 3GS and that screen doesn't look that bad to me. Besides my iPad 1 screen to me has always had superb video quality.

I would get the the new iPad. I had the iPad 2 and the screen looked like garbage next to my iPhone 4 and later my iPhone 4S. I'm so glad that new one has a retina display.

That is one reason I'm wanting to upgrade at least to an iPad 2. My iPad 1 seems really slow now and the iPad 2 is a definite upgrade. I'm still considering an iPad 2 because I don't want to spend that much money on a tablet that in a year will be barely worth half what you pay for it.

Did you get 5.1 that should fix some speed issues. Maybe you should just hang on and upgrade the iPad 4 next year?

Have you upgraded to 5.1? Makes the iPad 1 faster.

Buying old gear is always a bad idea with Apple. Enjoy the iPad 2 performance deterioration with new OS upgrades, as well as a lack of software features moving forward.
