[...]Other than that I'm reading, either websites, iBooks, or Feeddler. The current resolution of my iPad for those tasks has been fine for me. :)

I'm with the other guy here: WHAT? ;)

My iPad 2 usage is basically identical to yours (Safari, Instapaper, iBooks, and Reeder), and this new iPad will be a godsend.

Buying old gear is always a bad idea with Apple. Enjoy the iPad 2 performance deterioration with new OS upgrades, as well as a lack of software features moving forward.

Some of you guys are crazy. Did you not read that I've had the iPad 1 for two years now? Maybe you couldn't because your iPad 2 doesn't have a retina display so reading on it causes you intense pain and eyestrain. My iPad 1 has had all the features that I've wanted from my iPad, except that it was getting a little bit slow. Frankly I could have lived with it, as I'd already indicated, happily except that they dropped the price of the iPad 2 to something I was willing to stomach for myself right after buying my wife a new iPad 2 (which she loves despite the eye-bleeding reading on it apparently causes her).

The only thing I can imagine is that you guys either feel the need to justify your decision to upgrade to the retina display "new" iPad to yourselves and my buying an "inferior" product hurts your self-justification, or the sense of entitlement and elitism that comes with pre-ordering a new Apple product has reached new levels of ridiculousness. Either way, I have maintained that I am happy for you that you're getting what you want; why can't you be happy for me that I've gotten what I wanted and let it go at that? We're still all big one happy Apple-loving family, right?

I took advantage of the $100 price drop and purchased an ipad2. However, all this reading on the Retina display has me rethinking this purchase. I will go and do a side by side, and see if there is a "noticeable" improvement, and if so, will return the 2 and get the 3.

My honest opinion is if you're spending money on an expensive purschase then you might as well buy something properly and thus buying a new iPad as oppossed to an outgoing model is a much wiser long term investment. Especially since the device is non-upgradable.

Spending an extra $100 will give you a device that will last 1-2 years more.

its a device and not an investment. The same argument i bet you was used by many of the same people on this thread last year when the Ipad2 came out. In OP's case, he would be spending and extra 299.

Well I guess the thought is that for $399 he's getting a 16GB iPad 2 and for $100 more he could get the 16GB "New iPad".

But to each his own. I don't know why everyone is so adamant that he's making an unwise decision. It's his money and it's his device and it's for his needs. Like I said in another thread, people talk now like the iPad 2 is a POS just because it doesn't have a retina screen. Before anyone knew the upgrade would include a retina screen, the iPad 2 was awesome. Not everyone makes purchases based on resale. Enjoy your iPad.

If you purchased the iPad 2 and are happy run away and dont read the forum. LOL

I purchased a refurb right as soon as the price drop and the announcement of the new iPad, only to read the forum here on how great the new Retina will be, seeing the awesome keynote and how sweet games looked, and in the end just returned it. I am now purchasing the new one. So I blame you Macrumor-ers hey its the better choice in the end afterall im sure. :p

yeah, I gotta admit, for an Apple fan forum, coming to this thread was a huge buzzkill. I don't need anyone to justify, explain, or support my decisions but it's always fun to be able to share excitement when you can. Instead it's like "DURR MORON IPAD 3 IPAD 3 ONE OF US ONE OF US GABBA GABBA HEY."

I'm off to stab my own eyes out with the stylus I use on my iPad against Jesus Jobs' explicit wishes. It will be far more quick and painless than the torture I'm sure to put my eyes through when using my clearly inferior iPad 2 to read. Maybe I can just smash the Gorilla Glass and use it to slit my own wrists. Is there an app for that?

Around my way, that $100 price drop is selling iPad2s like hotcakes. Really, it's like every other minute someone is walking out of the store with one.

I think they'll do well with it, even without it being the new iPad. Don't get me wrong, the retina is nice and even adds an application to someone like me (who scans in Music sheets for use as a Digital Music reader for practice and performance); but the iPad 2 is still a very versatile and powerful machine for what it does. Especially with the 5.1 update, I'm really impressed with all the things I can do on it by itself. Sometimes, I feel like there isn't anything I can't do outside of heavy professional studio work.

I never said it wasn't impressive; I've never seen it. I just know me, and that kind of thing has never been a huge motivator for me. I'm sure its beautiful, but it certainly doesn't make me want to run out an buy one by itself.

Yeah exactly. My point is just that some say that the SCREEN is not worth it, & I take that to mean that they don't think it's gonna be a good screen. That's all. Like I said I wouldn't have upgraded if it wasn't going to be retina, iPad 2 is still a very capable device. I didn't meant it any other way. Apologies. My mom has an iPad 2 & I wouldn't tell her to upgrade. My wife is getting my iPad 2, she doesn't feel the need for the iPad 3. So, to each his own.

What did you expect making this post? Did you honestly expect people to discuss the merits of the iPad 2, especially with a new iPad due Friday?

Also notice that my post is not directed at you, but to others considering this situation.

i think he said somewhere on this thread that he already bought a brand new Ipad 2 for $200.

His post was directed at people who were considering getting the Ipad2 and not 3. He clearly said it in his OP. instead all he got was how dumb he was not to get the Ipad3.

Why not get a refurb one? You'll save money that way. Remember Apple refurbs are basically brand new.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

$479 for a white 16GB iPad 2 (Wifi + 3G). Get it shipped to your home or Apple Store to pick up.

iPad 2 (16GB Wifi) for $349

or

iPad 3 (16GB Wifi) for $499

If money is an issue, go with the iPad 2 and save $150.

This!
I bought my 1st iPad which is a refurb iPad 2 the day the new iPad was announced. Ive had it for a few days and love it!!

As you should. The iPad 2 is a fine device. As much as people don't want to call this an incremental upgrade, that's exactly what I think it is. The CPU doesn't change, as recent benchmarks bear out. The GPU was upgraded, but a big reason for that was to drive the retina display, plus apps haven't really been developed en masse to capitalize on the extra graphics horsepower (and when they do, they'll be optimized for the iPad 2 as well). The back camera still isn't as good as the iPhone's and the front camera wasn't touched.

I'm still on the fence about whether or not to buy the new iPad, and this is coming from a guy who upgrades both the iPhone and iPad every single year. The retina is nice, but it's not as if the iPad 2’s screen is bad. I think next year we can reasonably expect an upgrade to the CPU (which to me is more significant than the GPU upgrade because of what it means to the entire universe of apps, not just graphically-focused ones), possibly a return to Apple's thinner/lighter theme, upgraded front camera and perhaps better power management.

If both devices are brand new how is the newer model going to last a year or two longer when the internal specs are roughly the same?

I'm sure you will quite happy with your new iPad 2. All I can say is, whatever you do, do not ever look at the new iPad.

I preordered the "new" iPad but I am going to put in 1/2 for my sister to get an iPad 2 for her B-Day. It will be fine for her needs and she doesn't have to have the latest and greatest. Though that may change if she sees my new one. LOL

I'm sure many are faced with the $150 dilemma or whether or not to get the new iPad. $350 or $500. The screen is nice and all, but $150 is a lot of money that could go towards a bill, or heck, even car gas...or in some cases, BOTH!

iPad 2 wifi/iPad 3 wifi.

I like my new iPad 2 a lot.... For $400 brand new is great. I know that the new ipad is going to have a better resolution but.. Im ok with the iPad2...

The resolution really doesn't intrigue me all that much. Nor do the upgraded graphics capabilities; when I play a game on my iPad it's solitaire 95% of the time, and sometimes I'll load up a game of Monopoly if I'm stuck for something else to do. Other than that I'm reading, either websites, iBooks, or Feeddler. The current resolution of my iPad for those tasks has been fine for me. :)

I find it silly that you can't justify 100 dollars for all the upgrades in the new iPad, but have no problem spending money on an already outdated product, which you just said is for solitaire 95% of the time.

Why would you upgrade in the first place?

Only on Macrumors would a one year device be deemed "outdated." Isn't the debate really whether or not the "upgrades" have made the ipad 2 outdated? a lot of the reviews pouring in seem to indicate that for those who own the Ipad2, its not imperative to get the new one.

If i can get an Ipad 2 for $200 brand new like the OP did, it wont even be a debate, i would jump all over that.

I ended up buying a brand new ipad 2 32gb wifi for 399.99 without tax on ebay.
I hope it'll be worth it...

have a iPad 3 32gb 4g coming friday but found a iPad 2 64 gb 3g model for 500 bucks... planning to compare the two when the new one comes in, but I don't know if lte and a retina display will be worth the extra 300 bucks..
