Never have, never will keep them as pets.
What gave you the idea to keep them as a pet?
Like a lot of kids, I feel that I was born a scientist. I learned about praying mantises when I was about 4 reading this book about insects. I've been fascinated ever since.
I always wanted to find a mantis, but didn't until I was around 8. It was a
Stagmomantis carolina, a very common mantis. What I didn't know then was that it was really old, and despite , and best efforts to save it, it died two days later. I was rather heart broken.
I didn't find any more mantids until I was about 12. And I found a lot of them(Chinese mantids
Tenodera sinensis . I got to feed, and eventually breed them. They died like all mantids do in the winter.
Around my birthday that year, I found out that people sold international mantids online. So I asked for a few
Hymenopus coronatus for my birthday. They were beautiful, but a little too advanced for me.

Fast forward again, to may of this year. I find a forum dedicated to raising and selling mantids cheaply. I buy an entire house full! I love watching and caring for these guys.
Plus, you can't understand how intelligent and aware these guys are(or at least seem) until you observe some for yourself!

They look very sweet. After my kitty goes (purebred siamese, about 17 right now) I thought I would like a boa (very nice snakes) or a skunk. I never thought of a mantis. I'm sure they're quite nice. Thank you for this thread.
I've always been a fan of centipedes as they keep your house roach-free.
If you ever want any, just pay for shipping and I'll send you a few. When the weather warms up, given all the eggs I have, I should be swimming in them.
