I know its early and a lot of details are still unknown, but I was wondering if 10.10's hotspot might finally provide a method of tethering while on the att unlimited plan. Or, is it essentially the same technologies as today and I should not plan on any changes.

----------

I spoke with AT&T a couple weeks ago over online chat and asked if keeping my unlimited plan with an upgrade could be possible. They indicated it would be. So, I expect it will still be an option for me in the fall. I don't expect it to be available forever, though.

Lucky! Maybe I'll try and talk to them again and see if that's a possibility. I really want to keep my unlimited data.

I hate all of you unlimited data folks on AT&T!!! :D

Sincerely,

Jealousy!

Why? The plan is garbage. Every month my data gets throttled at 5GB. Why they still do that after all these years baffles the hell outta me. There are not enough unlimited data plan customers to effect the network anymore.

Speeds are .50mbps on LTE and even slower if on H+.

I wouldn't be all that upset if I didn't have unlimited. I really ever go beyond 2gb a month. The only reason (I believe) I keep is is because there's no going back... I'm almost always on wifi, anyhow...

Wondering if anyone AT&T users are still on the unlimited data grandfather plan from the original iPhone. Is it even worth it anymore?

My bill is roughly $100 a month and that's the 450 talk, unlimited messaging, and unlimited data plan. I have a work discount in there that knocks off about $15 a month bringing it down to $85.

I might use 100 minutes talk a month, probably send out 500 texts (likely another 1,500 iMessages), and on average use just over 4gb of data (highest month 4.87, lowest month 2.05 in the last 14 months).

Saw the announcement of $65 plans today and am just wondering if there's something better than the unlimited deal I'm paying now. Still on contract with my iPhone 5 until fall 2014 although I may finally jump ship to Verizon once the contract is up simply because they sell unlocked phones straight out the gate and I don't have to wait 2 years (or pay insane international rates) for AT&T to unlock the phone for me.

Unlimited data users... are there any still out there? Is there a more worthwhile plan?

Thanks!
M

I still have mine, as part of a family plan with 2 other unlimited data lines.
With my work discount it comes out to about $60/line. Because of that I think it is going to be a while before I swap out. it would have to get down to about 45-50/line to add the need to monitor data usage.

Wow! I had not idea that they throttled you so much. That's brutal. I guess I'll take my 2GB and be happy with it.

5GB of full speed data on AT&T is a lot better than what they currently offer on the *individual* plans. It is lousy that they throttle, but I can still use maps, surf the web and stream my music when throttled--and there is no chance of overage charges no matter what I do.

True. However, the 10GB mobile share plan is tempting me. On the other hand, the $130 for two lines goes out the window if you sign a contract. I may go back on contract for the iPhone 6.

I still have my unlimited plan, and every time I think of switching to save a few bucks, I just can't do it. I have a single plan, and continue to upgrade to the new iPhones.

My wife and I are still on the unlimited plans. I keep wondering if it is worth it. My wife never gets more than 1.5-2 gig while I am usually 4-5 and occasionally over 5 but not all the time. I have kept it thinking it was better to have as apps required more and more data. now with their share plans, it seems like it is getting to where it is just as good to go with a large data pool and combine them with our iPads.

AS far as throttling, how can you tell the difference between when you are being throttled and when its just ATT sucking? Hey-o!

I think the unlimited plans still make sense for individuals. In your case however, it might be worthwhile to check out the 10gb share plan.

Keep in mind that smartphones and the way content is delivered isn't going to stand still Eventually, video will be delivered in even higher resolutions, there will increased quality of audio streaming etc etc.

There have been times where the AT&T sucking factor has convinced me I was throttled only to discover that no--just poor coverage again. :D

My wife and I (on separate accounts) have each upgraded twice and it did not affect our unlimited plans.

Same here, but for me only. I've got the unlimited, but I'm really not sure I need it. I read something about getting throttled in some of these posts, but I've always thought that was a myth. So, if that actually happens, I'm probably wasting my money, since I never go above 3-4 GB, and that's if I'm not paying attention and downloading lots of stuff while not at home on wi-fi.

Yes, but I might drop it.

I'm basically spending like $120 extra per month on it.

I already have a MobileShare, so if I move my number to it, I would be saving quite a bit.

I give up a lot of things like tethering and FaceTime over cellular, and I have pay extra for domestic and international messaging, all for the sake of a some unlimited data plan that I only use 2GB a month.

I have 3 phones with the unlimited plan and I'm keeping them. The value of unlimited plans that are no longer offered are skyrocketing.
If you are sure you will never need unlimited, you should investigate how to sell the plan. I don't know how to do the switch, but do know that they are being sold on eBay for 5 to 6 hundred dollars.
Don't just let it die, it's something that will never be offered again.

Well, we dropped out unlimited plan. We never went over 4GB combined and my daughter now has an iPhone. The new plan saves us $30-$35 a month and we have another apart phone on the account.

I've only used more than 5GB a few times. I barely went over last month and received this message for the first time -

ATT Free Msg: Your data usage is near 5GB this month. Exceeding 5GB during this or future billing cycles will result in reduced data speeds. Wi-Fi helps you avoid reduced speeds. Visit att.com/datainfo or call 866-344-7584 for more info.

I've been looking over my bill and can save some money by giving up my unlimited plan and going with a shared 10GB per month (iPhone and iPad). I'm just finding it hard to give up the plan though.

I guess it's like owning a Ferrari while living on a small island. Nice to have but you never see it's full potential.

I had unlimited on three phone lines and gave them up a month ago because I only had 700 minutes of talk. we now share 20 gigs of data and have unlimited talk and we now have the freedom to talk while saving $30 a month. I never felt that I had received any kind of benefit from having the unlimited plans.
In addition I could probably cut my data usage to a lower amount to save even more money, but I wanted to have the full freedom of use until I saw what our average was going to be since our average with the unlimited was something like 16 gigs of months over history. We needed more talk and now we have it.
I've been throttled four different times and the problem with being throttled is that when one person gets over five gigs all three people suffer for the rest of the month.

I still have my unlimited and don't ever plan to do without unless forced. I rather be throttled at the end of the month than worry about watching my usage and paying extra for each gb. Throttled speeds haven't drove me mad yet as I can still do what I want to do.

I gave mine up for a mobile share plan awhile back. They're never gonna bring any tower over this mountain so my unlimited has remained unused for the most part, at least whenever I've been in my house!

Now I like the reduced bill, and ability to tether a laptop whenever I do travel and may want to fetch something past my mail.

All that said, if a cell tower pops up in my 400 square mile dead zone now, I'll be some ticked off, I have to admit. I'll be in full volcano mode for awhile if I ever hear that news, but then nothing to do except get over it; life's too short to second-guess that decision. :D

Seems like AT&T throttling is a bit better than Verizon. At least you get a billing cycle before back to normal. Verizon you get two.

What?
Verizon will keep your throttling speeds for 2 billing cycles and at 4.7GB instead?
That's nuts. They outdid AT&T again and went even lower on nickel and diming their customers.
Not sure how the government is letting them get away with unfair consumer practices like that.
