Well, I made two leaps of faith. I not only upgraded to a brand new OS but to a new machine as well. I went from a MAC G5 to a MAC PRO Intel.
My MAC G5 and OS Tiger served me "nearly" flawlessly for 5 years. My MAC PRO with SL has done very well with one exception....( Mail 4.1 ).
I wont go into detail because there are already threads addressing the issues with it. The topic here is SL overall. I guess it's like anything that
can and will be created in this life eventually you will get a bad egg in the mix.

To write a program the size of an Operating system and expect it to be flawless is unreasonable to me. That's like saying a master Chef will never
in his lifetime burn a piece of toast. We should expect a Master Chef to be able to make every piece of toast perfect...Thus his title. Unfortunately...Man Is Fallible!
Why isn't every car built in the world today able to run forever and never break down? Gee, they have been building cars for generations now and they can't make
a car that doesn't break down?

Why should we expect programmers to be able to do what no other product manufactures can?

Automobiles like software are mass produced it goes through the creation process, assembly process then it's tested and released to the public.
Some perform flawlessly right off the dealer lot while others you hardly get down the block before the engine quits.

Some times it just comes down to the luck of the draw.

If there was only one company making hardware and software in the World there would still be the possabilites for problems.
No matter how intelegent a programer may be unless he/she is more then human, mistakes and oversites will happen.

SL compared to Tiger is incredible, the boot time is almost nill. When I push the power buttons on both my MACs at the same time
the MAC PRO is ready to go long before I get a Apple Logo on the G5. I love being able to access my Apps from the Dock Icon Folder...Saaaaaweeeeeet!

I guess I can't complain about something I don't have the ability to do myself! I'm not in the programmers chair day after day with dead lines to meet.
I'm a photographer and musician and I would be soooo rich if I could guarantee every photo I shot and every song I wrote was perfect.

SL isn't perfect but what OS is?

I understand peoples frustration when something doesn't work right. SL over all is working for me "BUT" the Mail program has some serious issues but I am
confident in Apple that they will address these issues. MAil might be working great for others but as I mentioned earlier..."It's The Luck Of The Draw".

I guess when I look at what the alternative is....VISTA....SL is light years ahead.
I agree except for the suggestion that SL is a bad egg and no problems here with Mail. There are many email app options out there but Mail is by far the most elegant IMO. I was a bit disappointed that SL did not support MS Exchange 2003 (or whatever the next to last version is) as well as the latest iPhone firmware does; however, I have managed to do everything I need to do with it after overcoming a few hurdles.

For my personal email I use gmail. I am greatly satisfied on this front. I configured Apple Mail to access gmail via IMAP. It's great!

I also use Thunderbird on Linux, which I find much, much better than Outlook. Still Apple Mail is superior to Thunderbird IMO: more elegant, stable and reliable.

I don't know what issues exactly you're experiencing but having configured Apple Mail to access Exchange (Exchange & IMAP), gmail (IMAP & POP) & Yahoo mail (POP), I have found Mail to be an excellent & versatile email app.

It's working better for *ME*. I don't know why you have so many problems with it. What are your problems exactly? I find Snow Leopard to be an amazing upgrade from Leopard. I usually am not happy about OS upgrades but, I think Snow Leopard is the first OS upgrade that I've been very happy about.
Hey TheSpaz! Too bad we still have not gotten our more transparent, blurred menus back :-( I guess it's fairly minor in the big scheme. Would still be nice to have that option. I still think menu transparency should depend on menu bar transparency & remain similar.

hardware incompatibility

I'm just really ticked off that half of my hardware no longer works for lack of drivers.

My Canon scanner, Epson printers, and my M-Audio controller all are now useless until new drivers are available. I sorely regret upgrading from Leopard at this moment. I can't DO anything I want to do with my computer!

What happened that required all new drivers? I thought Mac used to advertise that you can just plug stuff in and it communicated with your Mac without a problem. I don't understand and I'm feeling pretty angry right now.

have you gone to the manufactures website to check for driver updates?

unless your hardware is really old, there should be drivers for all of those things...Plus, the apple website has alot of info on drivers for printers/scanners..

You are being unrealistic and unfair. You should have checked with the companies that make the software and hardware you rely on to make sure they had Snow Leopard-compatible software and drivers. This is your responsibility; no one else's.

Feel angry at yourself for not doing what you should have done.

Yeah Snow Leopard totally sucks. For me, just about everything is a little SLOWER than on Leopard, like Flash, Exposé, Spaces, etc... And it keeps crashing like once a week (by crash I mean either total black screen, either automatic reboot, either complete freeze requiring a reset, either a Kernel Panic). If I could switch back to Leopard by just the press of a button, I would definitely do it and stay with it forever. However, reinstalling Leopard would be a hassle and I hate hassle, it's as bad as the Kernel Panics, so whatever. I come from the PC world so I'm used to computers sucking.

You need to clean install...

...Oh, wait...thats a 'hassle'.

I recently upgraded to SL.. just updated from Leopard, no clean install.. everything runs smooth, boot up is nearly the same while shutdowns is definitely faster... no other problems so far... mid 07 macbook GMA950, 2.1Ghz and 2GB RAM..

btw: is it possible to do a tm backup, do a clean instal, and then use the tm backup to restore my folders, apps etc? (i don't think so, because it would defeat the benefits of doing a clean install, does it?)

yup, a HUGE dud...rhymes with bug

Snow leopard is a dud. Leopard never got bogged down for me but Snow Leopard tends to get bogged down by things a lot. It becomes extremely slow if the HDD is copying a big file or doing something intensive. And Quicktime X freakin sucks. Where the hell are the preferences so I can tell it to play automatically???

Dont compare Windows 7 to Snow Leopard. W7 is a huge improvement over Vista compared to Snow Leopard over Leopard.

If you want an accurate comparison then compare it with Windows 98 SE.

Of course, its only $30 for a reason. At least you get what you pay for. The downside is that it will probably be another 2 years before theres a real OS upgrade since Apple twiddled their thumbs with Snow Leopard.

Now I don't know anything about windows, so I won't even try to go there.

But yes, snow leopard is a total BUST! At first, when all the hype was all about, I did a clean install (as I always do once a year to start fresh on my HDD) on both my iMac (early 09) and white macbook (mid 2007). The first thing I noticed was that apple logo after the chime during powering on came up slightly faster, it logins to your account slightly faster, the airport goes on slightly faster, it wakes from sleep slightly faster, and applications opened up noticeably faster. So the fastness I noticed was in little things that you really don't even think about. The only thing was noticeably faster enough to amaze me was shutting off. It took only 10 seconds to shut down my iMac versus 30 seconds. Again, it's being SHUT OFF, 30 seconds is not a gig deal at all.

So, I was all amazed at the fastness of those things. BUT...as time goes on, you know, when you actually use your computer for important things, I realized that snow leopard isn't all cracked up to what all the hype was: Apps that would work seamlessly on 10.5 would crash all the sudden out of the clear blue sky! Like what the heck! I sent SO MANY crash logs to apple! A lot of times one after the next after the next!

I do video editing and encoding, and when I have a video player CRASH on me out of the clear blue sky, YOU CANNOT TELL ME THAT SNOW LEOPARD IS BETTER! The only thing I like about snow leopard are the two little added features to the dock and stuff, which isn't even worth the upgrade.

I also found out about VERY VERY annoying features. Those of you with an apple remote, who use the remote for 3rd party apps such as 'alarm clock' and such, have noticed that when you click on the PLAY/PAUSE button, frikken iTunes would open automatically!! And you'd think to yourself: 'Ummm...I hope I don't need to go to the apple store!" I called 1800MYAPPLE because I was scared and stuff! I was told that this was an added feature of SL, I told him that I was very disappointed that apple never announced this as I DO NOT like the feature and that there should be a preference to turn that OFF!

You see, when using 'alarm clock' (wakes YOU and ur computer up at a specified time to any iTunes song, but it doesn't use iTunes, it uses the files in your iTunes music folder) I would press the play button to SNOOZE the alarm, but then iTunes would open up and start playing a song! Do you think I want to hear some loud random song from iTunes playing first thing when I wake up! NO! I want a classical piece that I chose from alarm clock! So I had to figure out a workaround for this, and here's what I did: I used disk utility to make a disk image of a little bit bigger than the size of iTunes. I then copied iTunes into the disk image. The disk image was in my application folder. After copying iTunes into the disk image, I then deleted the iTunes app that was still in my app folder (not in the disk image, but the one that had just been copied over from the app folder). I emptied the trash, ejected the disk image..........and VOILA!! The play button would NOT open iTunes anymore! Each time I wanted to open iTunes, I would first have to open the disk image, and THEN open iTunes. I could still update iTunes by downloading the update, replacing the iTunes in the disk image with the new one, and then deleting the updated one from within the app folder.

I got really sick of dealing with snow leopard. I dealt with all of this each time I did a delete and re install. Like I said, I do a delete and re install enough times to know how an OS should run being fresh on the HDD.

I now use ONLY leopard as my main OS. I have snow leopard on a smaller partition and I only use it for one thing: ripping dvd's using 64 bit handbrake...because that DOES work better!

Something I've noticed about iPod and iPhone syncing with doing a restore on both leopard and snow leopard: I have a HUGE HUGE music library, most of which are really good quality, high bit rate stuff. I know what good audio sounds like, basically. All my settings for the songs were with the volume at '100%' when you highlight a song and click "get info" and change the metadata. That way, I can blast my iPod when I connect it to speakers. I restored my iPod a couple times using SL and regular leopard...and you know what....10.5 restores my iPod WAAAAY better than SL! The sound is more rich, and the VOLUME is way more louder! At work I'm aloud to play my iPod, and with 10.5 I can hear the music from accross the other side of the building, on the highest setting, but when I restored on 10.6 the same setting, I could not hear my music from even half way accross the room!

With my iPhone, I noticed that cydia (a jailbreak app store, basically) loads WAY WAY WAY faster when I do a restore (and re-unlock/jailbreak...of coarse! :p :apple: ) on 10.5 compared to 10.6. I mean, I ain't lieing here! I thought the problem was the fact that my iPhone is jailbroken...but NO! Alas! The problem is with SNOW LEOPARD! Okay, check this: Restoring and rejailbreaking on 10.6 made cydia take about a minute and a half. NOW...after doing a restore and rejailbreak on 10.5 (a clean 10.5 install on my iMac) cydia NOW loads up in about 30 seconds, AND THAT IS NOT EVEN ON WI-FI!! I know a lot of people have complained about cydia taking forever to load, which I noticed doing a restore on 10.6, but the difference is like night and day! And I have the same themes loaded with NO problems. When I would restore my iPhone on snow leopard, my taskbar would crash for some odd reason (the task bar, the little thing that shows the time and your signal, would just disappear and all that would show was whatever picture I had as a theme for the upper few millimeters of an app.) I haven't experienced that even after installing more themes from cydia. I also have a 2g iPhone, not even a 3g, and it's running off of T-Mobile's network in the USA! :apple:

So yes.....SNOW LEOPARD sucks and I'm really not ashamed to say it! And I happen to be a

My issue with HP printer driver...also, I forgot

The whole HP printer driver thing...Here is what I did: I backed up all my printer drivers via dragging and dropping onto my external HDD.

The files are located here: Macintosh HD<system<library<printers

and also here: Home folder<library<printers

After installing SL, I put in my printer's USB cable, clicked 'software update.' and nothing. When I replaced both of the printers folders with the old ones from regular leopard, all I had to do was set it up in system preferences and voila! My printer was ready and fully functional!

It's a shame apple doesn't tell people about these things.

As soon as I get my home server up and running, and get my external drive cleared (has home server back up on it), I'm going back to 10.5.8. Leopard ran fine for me, both on a hack and on a mac. On my iMac SL seems like its got Vista's memory flaw. 2 firefox windows and my memory is gone. Never had that issue with Leopard. Hell, I could run three VMs at a time on my iMac with Leopard and not have a issue with memory or performance. Anyone know when 10.6.3 is supposed to be out?

Less memory used on 10.5

Ive always used smcfancontrol & istat pro and my memory does not get used up as fast on leopard as compared to sl. My temperatures would also be a little higher using sl and so i would always hav to keep the fans running a couple hundred rpm above the default speed. Then again...i just got a replaced hdd fan in my imac so THAT may hav been the issue. But as far as memory is concerned...snow leopard definately uses more memory. I guess snow leopard is to mac as vista is to windows

Hopefully, the next update will address allot of these problems. This and the rest of the programs rewritten to 64 bit. I've switched back to leopard until the next update comes out. But, I do use SL while using aperture 3 and must say its very smooth. Can't wait for the rest of the programs to get updated.

If you're expecting iLife to go 64-bit in the next update, you're going to be disappointed. The only 2 apps that are included in OS X that aren't updated to 64-bit are iTunes and DVD Player.

I upgraded from Tiger -> Leopard -> Snow Leopard with no issues here. Theres the bugs thats floating around but that's not related to the upgrade.

I'm working on mac's for 10 year. And I've never had so much lack of speed in safari, booting and running multiple programs. SL isn't that great a leap forward!

release date was a surprise as well

First they said it will be released in october, and out of nowhere, they released it in late september!

I think they did it to beat windows 7 release date, but don't you think they should have waited to take care of all the bugs?

Flip4mac also SUCKS on snow leopard. So does front row because with snow leopard, flip4mac, and front row, you have to WAIT for WMV files to LOAD up (rather than them loading before they start playing) and this disables you from being able to stream forward to play a part of the movie file further ahead.

Snow leopard is a total waste of an operating system.

I went back to regular leopard, and I had to downgrade my flip4mac version to version 2.2.2.3 so that my wmv files would load completely BEFORE being played so that I can stream to a further area in the movie.

Well, stop streaming porn then. That's the only time I ever see WMV files. If you're not streaming porn, then what modern website is still streaming with WMV?

You basically downgraded from Snow Leopard just because you couldn't go anywhere in your streaming movie? Lame. Also, isn't there a version of Windows Media Player for Mac OS X?

I did a simple upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard and have had no problems with it at all. It runs great and all those little OS tweaks come at a price that is equivalent to the average bit of shareware.

For me, having QuickLook in the Open/Save dialogues was worth the upgrade alone.
