If you need a new phone, get one. If you can wait, wait.
The iPhone 7 is a good phone, I really don't think that the 7S will be leaps and bounds ahead.
For every year that passes incremental upgrades are only added, which I understand, the smartphone market feels kind of mature.

There are always holdouts hoping the next version is THE one (in this case, that the ip8 is the one to get), but that's really a fool's errand.

Why?...because Apple incrementally updates the phone each year. The days of widespread improvements from one year to next is over.

Look at the current rumors...likely only one phone (either the 5.5 or a rumored 5.8) will have redesign and oled. The standard 4.7 and 5.5 will continue with LCD.

Buy based on what Apple releases this year, not what you hope to have next year.
Honestly, there are a few upgrades which I'd consider 'THE one'.

1. iPhone 3G (2008)
Obviously, this was the first upgraded iPhone and had the launch of the App Store which attracted many potential buyers.

2. iPhone 4 (2010)
For me, this is a big one. It got so many new features. Retina Display. The first decent rear camera. FaceTime. The best battery life (at that point in time). Really premium design for its time. And, really, much more. It was a true beast.

3. iPhone 6 (2014)
Larger displays. Better cameras. Better battery life. All-new design. In terms of really new functionality, it wasn't as big as, let's say, the iPhone 4. But this is the definitely the iPhone that convinced people who hadn't owned an iPhone before, to get one. And, not sure here, but, I believe it also had the biggest percentage of upgraders from older generation iPhones.

-------------------
Of course, there's always a newer, more advanced model on the horizon... but the models named above were fantastic. It made older iPhones instantly feel obsolete.

I skipped the 7 as it was no great improvement on the 6S+ I had. I bought an Android flagship to use for a year instead. I'm now finally at the point where I can buy either an iOS or Android device depending on which wows me the most. I'm genuinely a floating smartphone buyer now.
Same here. I have owned iPhones since 2009, but early last year I decided to go for the Galaxy S7 Edge (coming from an iPhone 6S). Rumours were pointing to a, what I would call, disappointing iPhone 7 upgrade so I decided to try an Android flagship.

The Galaxy S7 Edge has fantastic hardware. Arguably the best on the market. Apple, however, has the best software on iPhone.

So this fall, I'm going to get either a new Android flagship or the OLED iPhone that's been rumoured. Which one I'll choose? Just like you... whichever wows me the most. :)

You and I would disagree on the ip6 then.

It was a flawed product because of the 1gb ram, especially for the 6+. Safari on the 6+ was atrocious. Apple milked another year out of the 1gb ram and they shouldn't have.

Also, insufficient internal support leading to the Touch disease (discovered later, but it doesn't absolve them in any way). Probably a cost-cutting move that would have had consequences except Apple is playing coy and not acknowledging anything.

Those are two pretty big negatives. Yes, it set records for sales..but I don't count that as a benefit for the consumer.

The award should go to the 6s and 6s+ instead (if anything).

You were smart to skip the 7 if you had a 6S. for me It was night and day coming from a 6+. Apple is going to take a pretty big risk in releasing a new iPhone this year that looks like the iPhone 6. Not all consumers are techy like us and won't even understand or care about the internals if it looks the same.

For me is important hardware inside, more than look from outside, but I like all new iPhones and for me new version 7s same as iPhone 7 is not problem. There are nice and clean and because I have iPhone SE than 7s will be nice improvement. I hate because some people treat us with iPhone SE as its not real iPhone.
Because it's budget version, so what? And I would like 7 with 128GB.

I hate because some people treat us with iPhone SE as its not real phone.

People talk foolishness.

But the SE is an old design...on that, critics are right. But the SE is a dynamite phone by itself.

And let's not forget the only modern 4" iPhone with updated RAM and updated camera (even if the FFC is still old tech).

I would welcome a new 4" iPhone with the same key internals as the 2017 iPhones and with force-touch, but I don't think Apple will be so obliging. At least, not this year.

So I could stomach a 7s for another year -BUT- not at the premium price Apple will be charging for it.

If the 7s will have the same LCD screen, etc then Apple should be charging less $$$ for it...but I don't think they will be rolling back the price.

If I were a betting man I'd guess that Apple will update it's 4" offering every other year.

Once it is released.

I am hoping the iPhone 8 has at least 4 GB of ram.

The Plus model or rumored 5.8 will likely have 4 GB.

And no, I didn't skip the iPhone 7 for the iPhone 8, because I didn't know anything about the iPhone 8 when I purchased iPhone 7 back in September 2016.

When does the iPhone 8 supposedly come out?

September, like it does every year.

If I don't think the 8 is fugly then I will have skipped the 7 for the 8. But I skipped the 7 anyway becuase I think it looks fugly.

If I think the 8 is fugly, which is entirely possible if Apple insists on keeping that camera bump, then I will have skipped the 7 and the 8 for something else.

Expect 3 GB of RAM.

iPad Pro is 4 GB RAM and iPhone isn't expected to run the same tasks. Even macOS High Sierra requires only 2 GB.

iPhone X will have a high BOM due to cameras and display. I don't expect Apple to spend lavishly on memory when it's not necessary.

Agree with you Apple will most likely keep that camera bump. But given that this year will be a all new redesign with those reduced bezels and OLED display i am ready to deal with that Nasty bump:D

I have a 6. When the 6s came out I was like, "Nah. Nothing new that I really need". When the 7 came out I was like, "Still nothing earth-shattering, plus I need an adapter just to use 99% of headphones in existence". I'm hoping and expecting the "iphone 8" to give me a reason to upgrade.
