It Works

I have been following this thread for awhile now and I just swapped out my LCD last night. I thought it might be of some use to some people to post parts and what I did...

MacBook Pro 1,1 (2.16GHz CD, 2GB Ram)
New LCD - Samsung LTN154U1-L03 (From a Dell D810)
Leopard 10.5.2

All I had to do was add Faye's override to my comp and adjust the VenderID and ProductID numbers to mine.

On the first reboot I didn't reset the PRAM and it still refused to work. But on the 2nd boot I reset the PRAM and it worked (the EFI white screen didn't) on the 3rd boot the EFI white screen was perfect.

Long story short Samsung LTN154U1-L03 works

Anyone care to try this on a Santa Rosa MBP?

So now that I'm addicted to the HD resolution of this mod, the only thing that could make my MBP better would be a faster processor!

If this mod could work on the current SR MBPs, I'd probably do it. Is the LED screen/technology completely different than these LCD screens?

How about a processor upgrade? Is it possible in the 2.33 C2D's? Or are they soldered to the MB?

Just wondering how long this HDModbook will last me...

@zhixingzhao

I think thats an "LDVS-2" port. Meaning the second generation of LDVS. And that is exactly what the MBPs have. That is the screen I have and the original cable was a perfect match. So was the inverter cable.

From what I remember, Faye's override file was for the Toshiba LTD154EZ0D. Quite strange that it also works with the Samsung panel...

Has anyone done something like this with a 17" MBP?

My 1680x1050 display just died a month outside warranty (yeah, I cheaped out and didn't get applecare) and I'd love to replace it with a 3rd party WUXGA panel. I skimmed this thread and only noticed 15" discussions, but I'll look back thru and see if there's anyone with a 17 in here too.

Thanks!

@ShadarJP
Thanks for the info about the LVDS-2 cable.

@bryanus
The CPU is soldered on the motherboard that means upgrade would be very difficult at least for first generation of MBP

@zerodb
I've never seen one report high def mod on a 17'' MBP but in theory, it should work just as the 15'' ones.

@bryanus

I actually had to reinstall leopard from scratch as my MBP basically crashed. I did an update and all my mac would do was loop through the choose your language, enter your itunes account, etc as if it was a new computer. So I formatted the whole HDD and installed leopard again. The weird thing was when I originally installed leopard, I needed the ATI inject file to get it to work.

I have not installed bootcamp yet. I will let you know what happens when I do. But through past experiences, Tiger and previous Leopard install I always needed to use PowerStrip.

Where do you get the screen from? Is it easy for a macbook pro install? how much is it, and is it led

anybody... anybody. i would like to this but i can't find a screen to buy. i have read about half of this thread, i know you guys mention models but no real links to buy them. I went to the www.ztronics.com link but they don't sell lcds.

@mashinhead

What are you looking for? If you google for the model numbers you'll find some stores selling the screens.

I got mine from ebay but I wasn't sure it was going to work so I was looking for a second hand one.

There is no single store where we all got our screens, you'll just have to do some hunting to find the screen you want.

well when i search in ebay nothing really comes up under the model numbers. I searched under browngranite's store and i have found 15.4 glossy lcds but he doesn't mention the model numbers so i dont really know if its what i need.

I've officially joined Don.Key now - Just ordered a LG / Philips LP171WU1(A4)(K4) in an attempt to refit my MBP 17" 2.33 with a busted display.

I know the official fitment is TL-B1 but the only seller offering that was Browngranite and they offer a "100% compatible" panel so I'd rather at least start with a known quantity here.

I should be off on my adventure in 2 days.

Browngranite never sells you what you want. They always write "compatible". This is quite bad for us because a solution for a specific panel might not work for a compatible one...

I ordered from DVDSuper One on ebay because browngranite says outright they're shipping a "compatible" display. DVDsuperone didn't say that, so I assumed they would be shipping the CORRECT part number. They didn't. I ended up with an AU Optronics B170UW01. It turns out their "matte" is still about halfway between the glossy and matte MBP displays. Seems a lot better for glare than my old glossy though.

On the bright side, it fit just about perfectly (inverter to screen cable is pinched a bit but nothing serious), all the screws on the sides lined up just fine, all the connectors were correct, and after one restart with an external monitor plugged in, it works flawlessly. I have switchresx installed but didn't actually do anything with it. Colors were borked, of course, but the mac calibration utility got that in check pretty easily.

I still think I may return it and insist on getting an LG display from another vendor. This one has pretty bad backlight leakage on all 4 edges.

I just wanted to pop by and say "farewell" to this thread. My slightly battered frankenbook pro cd is going the way of the dinosaur, making way for the nearly-double-battery-life Penryn. I'll miss the screen a bit, but I can't see Apple putting this dpi into notebooks any time soon... and LED backlighting is helping with that impressive battery life.

I'm glad people are still having fun with this and stretching the longevity of their systems.

Bye Faye, and long live the thread! (By the way, you might want to advertise your Frankenbook for sale around here...)

I think this thread will live on for quite a while once LED 15.4" WUXGA screens come out, which can only be a matter of time. If anyone has any news on this, please do share!

Bye Faye.

Well, after having worked with WUXGA for about 4 years now there is no way back for me to anything less than that. IMHO the performance gain of a new CPU version every half a year is minimal compared to the productivity gain of WUXGA compared to a lower resolution...

i skim through the thread and see mostly 15" wuxga mod. has anyone did this swap on 17" ??? i'm very tempting on upgrading my powerbook 17" to wuxga.

Bye Faye!

This thread will definitely live on. I can't wait for a Thinkpad X300 to be torn apart for its WXGA+ screen to be detailed. If that beast is thin enough for a Macbook Air replacement... I would be quite tempted. But it will have to wait till the Air at least gets Penryn.

LED Macbooks a possiblity?

Hey guys, totally stumbled on this forum by accident but it's a really awesome project. My biggest criticsm of my mac has been the horrid, 1440 resolution. Sometimes I feel like my iphone has a higher resolution. Anyhow My only problem??? I have a 15" MBP that is the first generation 2.4's with LED backlighting. Has anyone found a replacement panel with LED backlighting? I know apple isn't the only manufacturer making LED backlit laptops now. I don't know if I have seen a WUXGA LED panel though. At this point I would even take 1680 over the 1440 apple sticks us "power users" with.

Anyone have some info on this? Could I possibly just use a standard CCFL panel in this instead? The battery savings and the brighter lighting aren't near as important to me as possibly having 1920x1200!

Please let me know if I have any options.

Thanks!:)

This one keeps going round! Has already been covered on these pages. No, you can't replace an LED laptop screen with a non-LED panel. We're waiting for the higher-res LED screens to come out. If they ever do.

I did. My experience is on this very page.

lol i skimmed every other pages, except the last one.
so the B170UW01 was the one you end up using for the conversion ? did you bought it from browngranite ???

i'm thinking of using the OEM one off a Dell inspiron 9300 17" wuxga

isight pinout

Hi,
I pinned out a built in iSight from a Macbook abnd found the following info:

Pin 1 is the left most (has an chevron pointing to it). LVDS/iSight cable wire color in parenthesis.

Pin 1 (dark blue): connects to a pad on a 6 pin footprint for a chip that is not installed
Pin 2 (dark blue): connects to a pad on a 6 pin footprint for a chip that is not installed
Pin 3 (light blue, white conductor): USB D+
Pin 4 (light blue, purple conductor): USB D-
Pin 5/6 (orange): USB VCC (+5VDC)
Pin 7/8 (orange): USB GND

There is a voltage conversion to +3.3 VDC that occurs on the board for the Cypress USB interface chip.

I was not able to find anything else that connected to Pin 1 & 2.

Pin 3 and 4 connect to a purple and white conductor inside a shielded jacket with light blue insulation.

All wires are coaxial (insulation, foil, braid, insulator, braided signal wire)

That said, plugging this into a USB port on a MacBook Pro does nothing obvious (does not show up in system profiler).The USB Prober program shows this error:

[0x3c0f700] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.

Followed by message that the enumeration failed.

I tried plugging into a MacMini with a Bootcamp install of XP (in XP) using the iSight driver for XP and get this Windoze message:

USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.

USBlyzer on the Windows install claims that the VID and PID are both 0000, which may be that the ID information is now wiped (or never set) or it might just be the default failed values the program prints to the screen.
Any thoughts?

I am hoping ot use this camera as a head worn webcam to provide a world scene view while walking around.

******************************

I was curious if you ever got this working? My buddy has a 13" macbook that he is taking apart and I wanted to grab the isight camera from him so I can use it for both my mac-mini and my PC (I was going to mount it to my 24" monitor and plug it into the shared USB port off my KVM).

Have you had any luck getting the pinouts mapped correctly to a USB cable, so you get power and video working? Did you get past the error messages to get this working?

I found the pinouts for a USB cable:
http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml

and a pulled apart USB cable to use:
http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-uf1-2412-n.html

But wasn't sure how to get this to work...
(The rate limiting of the power shouldn't be that hard to get to 3.3V with mounting a resister inline with that pin, but curious how you "got" this working or didn't yet).

Thanks,
---Mike

Hi,

I've been considering this mod for a while on my 15" C2D MBP, but had some minor warranty work that needed doing. Finally was forced to get it done before the warranty expired, so now am free to join the WUXGA world :D

I've seen a few screens mentioned, but was wondering if anyone could advise the pro's and cons of each. Or if there are any newer ones released which may be worth trying.

Any help and advice is much appreciated.

Since I need to reinstall the machine now (wiped everything because Apple can't guarantee the security of your data) I will be taking this opportunity to move to Leopard and Vista. Incase that has any bearing on my choices.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
