My LP154WU1 A1 K6 has a problem,

I haven't noticed until now because I have had no reason to run the screen at a lower resolution but it won't display anything on:
640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024

It works when they are stretched, it works when on all the other resolutions in between but not on those 4 (most common) resolutions.

This is my first Mac so I'm a bit short on ideas, anyone?

I can use those resolutions on my LG XXX - TLB1 screen. But those other resolutions suck! So, who cares? Just enjoy the 1920x1200 goodness...

New Install after screen upgrade?

Here's a question someone on this thread should be able to answer:

If I want to swap out my old HD for a newer higher capacity drive and reinstall the OS... Will a fresh Leopard install be able to work with the high res screen? Or am I going to have to swap out for the old display for the installation process?

Anyone have direct experience in this?

Thanks!

I did this with a nice new 300GB drive. Put the screen in. installed the new drive, put the Leopard DVD in (I also upgraded the optical drive, though that's beside the point) and away it went. No need to do anything else.

However, I would verify that everything is working after each step (screen first, then drive, etc). Otherwise if it's not working after you've installed the new components, it will be harder to troubleshoot what's gone wrong.

I'm not sure what you did! Did you use the old screen?
it's just straight forward for my powerbook; i just swap out the old screen w/ the wuxga one and power it up, never had to do the sleep trick that everyone is doing. and put in a new hd while at it. a fresh leopard installation follows, with the new screen. even panther sees the wuxga just fine when initially tested. although i'm not sure why everyone is doing the sleep trick, i never did that.

Installed it today, haven't noticed anything better or worse in Vista.

Still have timing issue, and the wierd buzz. Think it is definately to do with a timing mismatch, as it doesn't happen in Leopard.

Maybe it's time for a Wiki?

Guys, PLEASE read previous posts to see if your question has already been answered. This one has already been answered many, many times over and over again. I know that a lot of people come on here without a clue as to how LCD panels work and post the first question that pops into their head, which is always, "hey, can I do this with my spanking new LED macbook pro wondertoy?"

A lot of people have put a lot of hard work into making this thread work for people who are serious about what they are doing and actually read other people's posts to see if their idea has already occurred to someone else. Please be courteous and respect that.

I think it's time to make a wiki for this project. It would help people find answers to questions without having to parse through this log, and it also might get Apple's attention at the demand for Macbook Pros with reasonably sized screens (15.4", not 17.0") with a decent resolution.(1920x1200).

Could someone setup a Wiki? Also we should try and get it to be the first hit in Google for:
macbook pro 1920x1200 15.4"

Its actually the first hit on google (.co.uk & .com) for "wuxga mbp". And the second hit for "mbp wuxga", the first hit in this case being a thread about the low resolution of the standard 15.4" screen, and i've posted on that thread mentioning this one.

:)

Has anyone tried alternatives to powerstrip in vista.

I have a couple of issues with powerstrip which I can't seem to resolve.

1) Screen whine. Pretty sure it is due to timing issue since I dont get it in OSX. But I can't seem to find any setting which resolves this. I have the LG panel, would appreciate if anyone who has working settings with this panel in Vista could share them.

2) Powerstrip kicks in fine on startup. But on resume from suspend, or when the screen alone goes to sleep and comes back, I have to manually reapply the settings. I do this by adjusting the refresh rate by 0.05hz and back again. This causes the display driver to crash and start again.

Appreciate any help or ideas.

Thanks

I meant getting the hypothetical wiki to be the first hit, not the forum. A forum is probably not the best way to present this information, although it's good for gathering information and asking questions.

I agree that a wiki would be a good thing to set up. Why not be the one to go ahead and set it up? There are free wiki tools out there. Then post a link for it here.

I just got a powerbook titanium and I would love to upgrade to a 1920x1200 screen. Where can I find them and anyone know if they would be compatible with the tibooks?

I agree as well. A wiki would be great tool.

Does the LP154WU1 come in a glossy version as well?

Does anyone have an answer to this question?

I have been looking around for a while, and there does not appear to be a glossy version of the LP154WU1 available anywhere. I have found a fair few matte versions, and am about to buy one if there are no glossy ones in existence.

For the record, Bliss Computers on ebay lists them, but what they actually sell is a compatible panel from another (always random) brand. I would not recommend them. Smartmicro seems good in that they sell you the actual screen model they list. But yeah, they don't list an LP154WU1 in glossy, only matte.

Thanks for any help. The comments I've read here about the matte LG screen are great anyway, and I don't think I'll be dissatisfied. Just want to make sure there is no glossy before I go ahead.

Other thoughts...

This LG display rocks. I'm not sure if it was because my other display was on the way out, but this display is much brighter. And this smaller text is much easier on my eyes because it's so much crisper. Too bad Apple can't offer this as an option on any MBP.

Special thinks to noetus for summarizing all this info. It was a big help! Having this much real estate makes it much easier to stay in MacOS and just use VMWare to get at my bootcamp partition.

Louden,

I'm looking at the same display/eBay vendor for my 15" CD MBP. Did it have brackets that you had to remove?

Thanks!

MacDann

Nope, my display just dropped right in. Take a look at the thread and see which suffix I had for my screen - as that I screen, I think was meant for an IBM laptop.

Either way - still working great!

In case anyone was wondering - install of 10.5.3 went without a hitch and the display is still working fine. indeed, my whole system is running more smoothly and snappier - it's a pleasure.

Incidentally, I see (noticing for the first time) that my LG display shows up in System Info correctly. Here is what it says:

ATI Radeon X1600:

Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x71c5
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-158
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.158
Displays:
LG Philips Main Panel:
Resolution: 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Built-In: Yes
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Display Connector:
Status: No display connected

I have a feeling that our old issues with retrofitting these displays and making them compatible with Mac OS are now a thing of the past.

With Windows Bootcamp, it's another issue still, however.

louden -
any comments on my question about glossy/matte LP154WU1's?

I haven't seen any glossy screen, but I never looked that hard for one. This isn't a great screen (nor is any matte screen) great for working outside, but I have to think reflective and brighter screens will soon be on the way...

I ended up purchasing the standard LG Philips LP154WU1 that everyone else here did (matte). It is stunning, the brightness and contrast are excellent, and colour reproduction is very accurate (whites are very white, my previous displays haven't managed this). Viewing angles are also excellent.

I put the screen in a Dell XPS M1530 which is probably the PC equivalent of the 15.4" MBP. Anyway installation went smoothly, and I couldn't recommend the LG-Philips display more highly. Love it. :)

Thanks to everyone who's posted in the first forty-odd pages of information on this thread. I now have a Macbook Pro with a 1920x1200 screen, and I couldn't've done it without y'all.

A few people have suggested a wiki, and it just so happened I had some webhosting sitting around doing nothing, so I decided to give back to the community. There's now a wiki dedicated to this very topic at

http://www.hiresmacbook.com

I've gotten the information in it started, but I didn't want to go cutting-and-pasting anyone's words from this thread into the wiki-- that'd be rude-- so I basically put down what I did in my own words, but it could stand updates from people who have use the ATIInject method, or people who used different types of LCDs, or other topics I'm not sufficiently familiar on to be able to re-crunch into my own words.

Thanks!

Good work foxtrot! Excellent to finally have a wiki on this. Now let's get some more users editing and adding to the wiki to make it even better.

Okay, I just did this and it's just amazing. I shoot into my laptop on location and have always had to carry a second monitor and a generator to power it so I had enough screen real estate but this is truly amazing. Everything is up and there's so much room! I always wondered what it would be like to have a screen of the resolution of the iphone and now I know. Thanks so much to all who contributed.
