Anyone interested in a Hi-def (1920 x 1200) mod for PB/MBP?

Very happy with my modded MBP15" s?

I have to admit the 15" with UXGA is a great combo in os X...hope Apple introduces them in next gen MBP

I know they have 1440x900 13" LED backlit LCD if you're interested; same one they have in the Lenovo X300 ;)

Was thinking about it for my MBA rev.B
But X300's one is ****** according to Thinkpad forums.
... though coming from MB that probably won't be an issue :p

Still was going to post here one day, to see if everyone knows about other 13" WSXGA LED screens out there?

I tried a couple of 4x3 aspect ratio screens over the weekend:

IBM/IDTech IAQX10N, 15", 2048x1536: Worked fine, it came to life immediately upon waking from sleep. I think that I'm going to make a laptop that uses this in portrait orientation — 1536 is more than I need for width. The resolution is absurd, everything was about 3/5 height.

Toshiba LT121KM1K, 12", 1400x1050: No luck. Nothing displays, and the LVDS cable gets very hot. I suspect that the pinout is different. A friend of mine has a Lenovo laptop that uses this display, I may ask if he would mind opening the case and letting me take a picture of the LVDS cable. I'm a big fan of little laptops, and this would be a nice compromise between small and high res. It also has a Wacom digitizer built-in, but I have no spec on the pinout, and the board protrudes a centimeter or so past the side of the LCD. If anyone can learn about the pinout for this display, I'd be very interested to know.

Both screens were purchased on eBay for about $100-150. I'm using a 2.16Ghz C2D MacBook Pro 15".

The two screws you need to remove to get the LCD back cover off really are tricky to unscrew from the sides — especially when you turn the driver the wrong way. D'oh. Beats stripping the whole system, though, and they aren't needed to hold the panel on at all.

Dude, you rock!
I did not even know there was a qxga 15" screen. I just bought one from ebay and will replace my 2.16UXGA with it. I am on the quest for the highest resolution ever!
Thanks for the information seriously!

Why would you buy that? If that 2.16 is in reference to a MBP, the QXGA 4:3 ratio panel will not fit.

The 15" QXGA was built for a Thinkpad R51.

You are absolutely right, unfortunately i realized that only after hitting the buy it now button on ebay. Then i realized i can try to put that qxga display on my t60p which has a 15" 1600x1200 so not all is lost... i wish i had been a bit more patient but i am intrigued by the qxga resolution that is very very high pixel density.

Aye, I'll be making use of a friend's laser cutter and possibly another friend's forge to make an entirely new laptop case for this. A shame about the 12", though; if that had worked, I may have been able to use the shell of a 12" PowerBook. I still have hopes that I can make an adapter cable for it, although I'll admit that is unlikely to work.

Lutris, I got my QXGA screen but it does not work on my T60p thinkpad so i am thinking of trying to modify my MBP 2.16C2D to fit the screen by modifying the frame etc like you are. Have you made any progress? is there a way we could share ideas or experience moving forward on this?

So I ordered my LP154WU1 from Bliss computers. I made sure my MBP was compatable but when I took it apart the inverter and the cable for the inverter are not the same. My old screen is a LP154WP2 (TL)(A1).

Any help please did I order the wrong one?

Is this perhaps because the LED 2.2 can't use that screen? I have a 2.2 and a 2.16 I may try this update on the 2.16

Did you ever get it to work? If not, perhaps you would like to sell that new hires panel. PM me if so.

Also, does anyone know which LG is certain to work?
LP154WU1(A01) is what came up first on the Bliss site. There are a ton of other with different suffix after U1 and I no idea if A01 is the right one for the MBP.

Cheers,

Cheers,

For the LED backlit MBP such as the 2.2 and 2.4GHz variants, does anyone know if it is possible to change the inverter to an older style 2.16/2.33 generation to use an older non LED backlit screen or is the whole circuitry different?
Thanks

From your sig it looks like you've performed this upgrade, are you able to provide the exact part number for the display you purchased?

Cheers,

Hi, both of my MBP are non-LED, they are C2D 2.16 and 2.33; in one i used a glossy LG WUXGA and in the other i used the Samsung from my Z61P. The part numbers are in the wiki in this thread. I got them from ebay using this "LP154WU1 15.4" WUXGA GLOSSY LCD SCREEN" from Bliss Computers.
Good luck

Not yet, I've been busy lately and I'm on vacation for a couple of weeks at the moment. A couple of weekends from now I'll have a chance to bug my friend about getting his laser cutter up and running. I'm still debating how I want to build the hinges, though, as I'd like to have a portrait-orientation screen.

Send me an email, my address is lutris at gmail dot com. If I get this going, I'll post more here and on the wiki when I've a more final design. Hell, if I make the case out of Altoids tins, I'll get posted on Make Blog. ;]

Understood, I have a 2.16 coming. I went to Bliss and there are like 12 (ok, more than that!) different versions of LP154WU1.

But I'm not sure this is the same one you have working. It would be good to know before I order it.

Thanks,

Lutris, I was able to put that gorgeous qxga in my T60p after some hacking and flashing the eeprom so I am going to buy another one.
Panzer I got the one without any additional letters or numbers after the model number. Be very careful remembering the direction and orientation of the inverter board. I broke two when replacing the back cover because I had put the board flipped over and the metal clip broke the inverter board when I pushed the cover back in.
Take the plunge, the mbp 15 is awesome in wuxga. Also the matte screen also looks awesome, less reflection, crisper but less vibrant. Both good for different reasons.

I'm curious about you getting the qxga physically into the T60p. I remember some people on forum.thinkpads.com giving up on that project becase the lcd is too thick for the case. How did you do? Does it look hacked from the outside? Lid close alright? Care to post some pics?

Guys and Gals,

just got an LG Glossy WUXGA from Bliss and installed it, it looks awesome and luckily no dead pixels...i broke the lcd inverter when replacing the back cover because i had the inverter upside down...so now i have to wait for a new inverter...painful, got a taste now still have to wait again...

New LCD arrived today. Will try upgrade this week. Other than being careful and paying attention to the inverter orientation, do you have any other valuable insight?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Upgrade complete. Screen is Matte (not glossy as ordered but looks great) and displays 1920*1200. Remarkably, text is not as small as I thought it would be.

I must admit I chickened out at the last min and paid Onyx Consulting (visiting Atlanta and heard they do good work) to install the display. 2 hours @ $80 hr with the help of this thread (sleep method success!) and the tech got it up and running!

MR Rocks!

Cheers,
