Did anyone get a 12" Powerbook screen upgraded? I would love a slightly higher resolution on this machine. I could make it last a little longer in my life... :)

I don't believe I've seen any alternative 12 inch screens. I can't image there is much of a market for high-res small screens.

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply. Think I'll keep the little trooper though.

Yeah, just updated my 12" PB to 10.5.5

Still works great. Not much screen real estate but reasonably speedy for everything except video.

I did look up some higher res LCDs on http://www.blisscomputers.net/servlet/StoreFront and searched for 12" LCD. A list of LCDs came back. Most at XGA (1024x768) but a few at WXGA (1280x800). Don't think those would fit in the bezel but if we could find a couple of 12" PB with cracked screens to experiment on it might be something to play with. Of course the LCDs alone cost over $200.

Cheers,

Having done some further reading on the "whine" issue with my machine, it appears it maybe nothing to do with the screen mod.

I had originally thought it was down to the incorrect refresh rate settings under bootcamp. But after panzer06 stated his machine was fine, and copying his powerstrip settings didn't solve the issue, I started to look at it again.

It appears this is a known issue, and others who haven't modded their machines suffer the same whine in Windows only. Originally I didn't notice these threads as most searches for MBP whine yielded previous issues which presented themselves under OSX and Windows.

I didn't suffer these issues before upgrading my screen, but as part of the upgrade I also moved to Leopard and Vista. I imagine it was the OS upgrades which have led to the whine issue under vista.

I'm going to email Apple to see what the possible resolutions are. I've come accross several culprits, ranging from power management in windows to bad logic boards.

Has anyone done this mod with a MBP that has a LED screen (the Santa Rosa models) yet? There's a few companies (Dell, HP, IBM, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba) that are selling 15.4" WUXGA screens according to the search on blisscomputers.

I'd love to do a mod like this (the res is my biggest complaint about my MBP…) however since the screens are $350-$400 per screen, I don't really have the money to buy a screen at random and hope it works..

Let me know how the new battery goes. I think I maybe needing a new one aswell.

What did you use to check the original battery btw?

I am pretty sure my screen whine is down to the screen timing in windows, since it doesn't appear to do it in OSX. I'll have a look at your screenshot and compare settings.

Thanks

New battery is outstanding. I get 3 hours on power saving settings and just over 2 hours of constant work. This is versus about 45 minutes on the old battery. BTW, the battery from China was a genuine Apple OEM battery (must have fallen off a truck :) for $64 shipped.

Cheers,

Take the plunge, the mbp 15 is awesome in wuxga. Also the matte screen also looks awesome, less reflection, crisper but less vibrant. Both good for different reasons.

This is definitely true. I ordered Glossy but got Matte and didn't bother returning it and it just doesn't pop like my wife's glossy SR 2.2 LED. Awesome having the hires but I miss the Glossy when watching TV & playing games.

Cheers,

Thanks for letting me know.

Looks like I'll have to order one now anyway, as Vista cant detect my battery now. It still works, but obviously I have no clue when it will run out of juice and cause a system crash

Apologies for posting this in the thread, but I registered just to PM you my interest, only to find out that you need a post count of 5 to send a PM. Please PM me if the modded MBP is still available. Thanks!

You have to get up to 5 to receive them as well.

I love mine and his is a bit faster CPU too. Look around, I'm sure you something to say.

Cheers,

I tried to send yo a PM, but it says you elected not to receive communitcation. You need to change that setting in your account prefs. Or you can also email me at teamriab_at_gmail_dot_com.

ATIinject needed for initial setup at some point...

Well, in "preparation" for selling my MBP, and to make sure that I'm selling a solid working mod, I just _had_ to reset my PRAM to see what would happen, as that was the one issue I had in the past resulting in the "BSOD" (Black Screen of Death) prior to installing Leopard.

Guess what happened? Yup, BSOD!!! Argh!

My first attempt was to simply attach an external, and try to "detect displays" but that didn't work. I then botted into Windows XP and that worked fine (although with the same semi funky colors as I had before), but rebooting into OSX the screen was still dark.

I just couldn't understand why my seemingly patchless screen was no longer working. I didn't want to resort to the "sleep method" or some other method that I had never used in the past.

As I looked back over this thread, and read about all of the ways to get this mod to work, I came across jeeb75's posting about no longer needing the ATIinject. This made a little sense to me. Perhaps my earlier tinkering and use of ATIinject somehow set the initial display to be recognized by OSX and it got set into PRAM, and stuck over the course of my Leopard upgrade?

I gave it a shot. I reintalled ATIinject through an external display, set the perms for it, then rebooted.

Voila! Got my screen back!

Of course, now I had to test my "theory". I then deleted ATIinject with the command 'sudo rm -fr ATIinject.kext' and rebooted.

Well, I'm typing this post on it right now, so it looks like ATIinject does have something to do with getting the display into PRAM.

Thanks jeeb75! I owe ya! ;-)

I just completed reinstalling Leopard and no Mods were required to have the screen run properly. I have the Samsung L-04 screen. I am wondering if the others who have had the high res screen working without any mods on Leopard have use ATIInject at least once in the past.

I am wondering if a PRAM reset will break the functionality.

Just wondering if anyone is interested in modifying their PB 15 of MBP to fit a Hi Def display in there. I've had a bit of a look around and I am pretty sure this hasn't been done before (until now) - but I could be mistaken

If there is interest I'll post some pictures and information about how to.

Doing apple's job for them? Get a wage from them ;)

Know nothing about this. I paid a shop to perform the upgrade and I believe they did the sleep method with both old and new displays partially connected. I've never reset PRAM or any thing and I used SuperDuper to migrate my data from another MBP. Works fine and hope I never need to reset anything.

Cheers,

Thinking about selling mine aswell, tempted by the IBM T series my brother has. Don't really use OSX that much.

I have a 2.33 C2D, with LG WUXGA (and original screen), Vista (can remove if not needed).

I'm located near West London, will only ship to the UK. But prefer someone to collect.

Drop me a PM if your interested.

Hi How do you operate your machine from the external Display if the previous display preference had been set to use the MBP display instead of the external and "Mirror Displays" was not checked? Last time this happened to me there was no menu on the external so i couldn't do anything as all the windows opened up on the MBP display that was blank.

Thanks inadvance
