PowerBook G4

I (will) have a PowerBook G4 with the ATI MR 9700 64Mb, 1.5GHz processor, and (currently) 1280x854 screen. Is this the same as or close enough to baxterbrittle's original mod to work? if so, what screen model number(s) work(s) for the mod, and do I need a new cable, inverter, etc. or shall I just buy the screen and pop it in (ignoring for now the physical size issue)? Basically, can we summarize the working mod for the PowerBook G4?

Before anyone flames me (this has been a pretty friendly thread so far but hey), I did read the first ten pages of the thread, but 45 is a bit over the top :).

SirPsychoS = Sir Psycho Sexy?? :D

Lol

yes it is - great song, great album, great band :) I wanted SirPsychoSexy on xbox live but it was taken, so i took SirPsychoS and used it here for consistency's sake

Well I opened it up again and did the sleep trick and it went back on. Have done several reboot and shutdowns and it seems ok. I have calibrated for color and it looks really good. I guess for me the moral of the story is avoid PRAM reset at all cost, else will have to open it up and do the sleep trick.
Cheers to all and thanks for this thread!
Rob

Gave up and went back to the old display :( (1440x900 matte with slight bruises). I am about to put the laptop (2.16 C2D ATI x1600) and 1920x1200 display up for sale in the marketplace for $700.

Still have my 2.2 SR MBP and bought a Sony Vaio FW290 with 1920x1080, ATI HD3650 and Bluray for $999 for the games since I no longer run bootcamp at all on the MBP (nvidia card on SR died :( after gaming session, replaced under Applecare).

Hope yours keeps working.

Cheers,

Doh!

I have to do the sleep trick, as I reset the PRAM because of an SSD issue.

Frack.

Is something like this possible on the new unibodies? What type of screen does techrestore replace the glossies with?

We never did find LED screens that would work on the SR MBP so I doubt anyone is doing mods on the new unibody systems.

Cheers,

Well, I have been power using my MBP 2.33 with the high rez display for months now and it's going strong! Done updates and many sleep restarts and so on. No problem.
I recommend this mod as long as you (if you have the LG-Philips screen) avoid PRAM reset.
If you do a pram reset you will have to open and do the sleep trick to get you screen back.

Best regards to all!
Rob

Mine stopped working after a hard crash in bootcamp Vista. Never could get the Hi rez to survive a reboot after that no matter how many sleep method attempts I tried. Prior to that it had worked for 3 or 4 months. I was very sad to go back to the 1440x900 display.

It's good to see most folks are still using their mods.

Cheers,

LED backlight?

Just wondering, I have an MBP with LED backlight, is the backlight built into the display? If so is there LED backlight in any of the HD displays?
Wouldn't want to lose the excellent brightness I have now ...

there is a 24in stand alone led display you can buy from apple.

You can also buy the led and lcd replacement displays from powerbookmedic.com

I think you misunderstood his question. He was asking if any of the 1900x1200 PB/MBP displays would work with LED backlights, not a standalone 24" model.

I did this mod. thanks to you guys.

so today I lost my pram and here is what happened.

I was shutting down xp (bootcamp) and I chose to restart and then I closed the LCD and left it to boot up to OSX (the default). Apparently, since the screen wasn't on from boot up (since the lid was closed, the LCD is off, backlight and all) I guess it reloads the pram when I open the lid back up because it sure was ugly when I opened it back up.

not too big a deal for me since I left the two bottom screws out of the bezel (the hardest part of removing the lcd) I just did the same thing except with the old lcd. (shutdown, connect old lcd, hit power and immediately shut the lcd, let it boot, open it, wait, shut it again to put it to sleep, reconnect new lcd. voila)

just wanted to report that so we can avoid this issue in the future.

since the old LCD is cracked, I'm thinking about just taking out the PCB of the old screen and keeping it my bag, or at least somewhere more accessible than home in case this happens out on the road.

Also, on another note. I'm getting a lot of noisy pixels in XP with bootcamp. did anyone ever figure out what going there? I noticed it is related to what colors are being shown. Some shades of blue look absolutely horrible.

cheers.

Just in case anyone's still following this, I've posted up my first-draft write-up and detailed instructions list from this thread at:

http://www.greyhead.co.uk/wiki/Installing_a_high_resolution_display_on_a_Macbook_Pro

The edited highlights from this entire thread can also be found at:

http://www.greyhead.co.uk/wiki/WUXGA_conversion_research_page

Hope this all helps someone. Maybe if it turns out to be really useful, a mod could add this to the first post...?

Thank you very much! I saw your post and thought I'd have a go at it again (paid a shop to do it the first time and it worked fine for a few months when a hard Vista bootcamp crash hosed the display) and do it myself this time.

I just re-installed my 1920x1200 display and after one sleep method attempt it came right up. Have no idea why it started working now but its great. I really like having the high-res mod on this 2.16 C2D MBP but after using my SR 2.2 for months I do miss the bright glossy (my hi-res screen is a rare matte display even though I ordered glossy) LED (1440x900) is just not enough resolution.

Cheers,

i did the mod it was very easy (thanks to all the peeps on this thread), i bought a LP154WU1 matte for under 70$ on ebay

Great news that it's all working for you folks. I got the LG panel working perfectly and (touch wood!) it's perfectly stable on the MBP at the moment ;o)

hey OP, been reading everything over (just the start).

did a quick ebay search and i came across this::

THIS

i have the original MBP CD (see sig). i have no doubt the GPU can run it, but will it fit in my laptop?? you say below that it will.. so maybe i might start saving :):)

thanks for the great thread!

As far as the pictures go they are very similar to my machine. I will take it apart and give you all pictures etc... of how it was done. However I am finishing up the semester at school at the end of this week and have heaps and heaps of work to do - hope you can hang out till then. There seems to be enough interest to warrant that. These are my thoughts on the matter:

MBP 15" - Easy as you like. Swap the panel over and enjoy. However I cannot guarentee that but from experience (I was working for an Apple service dept when I started this) that these things are mostly interchangeable. For the guy whom had issues with the compaq trying ther same mod - I can't really comment on why it didn't work - maybe the video card wasn't up to it?

Well don't bother reading again (it doesn't seem to help :D)
In a word : Yes (it will fit your laptop)

I think it's not very eventful here right now :p
So please forgive me for a bit of hijacking
Yet I still need your expertise here :

What do you think of possibility of slapping MBA's screen on a UMB?
I don't wanna "know" if it's stupid or expensive ..
All I want to know - how it can be done

It's not that I have a spare MBA screen laying around ...
But I'd rather more likely get UMB, if I had a chance to upgrade it to at least a better quality screen.
(I don't care about black frame at all :D)

(And mega-upgrade will be to source 1440x900 13" :cool::cool::cool:)

I would like ask WUXGA users tell me if their screen is back light even, especially when the screen is completely white. And my big request to you, guys, is- could you please upload some pics of your WUXGA screen when your screen has pure white wallpaper? Thanks a lot!!!
