1920x1200 LED Screens for the New MBP 15"?

New to this, but is it possible to change out the screen in the new late 2008 MBP for a LED 15" 1920x1200 screen? if it even exists?

Sorry for the late reply.

There are a couple ways to do this actually.

Start up with the external attached. When you boot up, you will see the external light up. Just wait until you see your desktop image and are pretty sure it's fully booted. Then you can use the Fn + F7 keys to change to mirrored mode and will have access to your normal desktop.

You can probably do something similar by using an external keyboard and mouse as well, and putting the MBP to sleep once booted, then waking it up with the external keyboard. The full desktop will then appear on your external. The MBP also needs to be plugged into the ac adapter to do this.

Hi How do you operate your machine from the external Display if the previous display preference had been set to use the MBP display instead of the external and "Mirror Displays" was not checked? Last time this happened to me there was no menu on the external so i couldn't do anything as all the windows opened up on the MBP display that was blank.

Thanks inadvance

Well I've been enjoying my 17" swapped up to a 1920x1200 panel for several months now, and just today my backlight shut down on me right in the middle of using it. Tried rebooting; the backlight comes on long enough to see the apple logo and then it goes black. If I hold down option when I reboot, I can see the boot menu for just a moment and then it goes black too.

I'm thinking inverter failure (since the backlight does WORK, it just doesn't stay on...) anyone else had something like this happen?

Your question is more of a troubleshooting issue and not related to modding a 15" MBP to support a 1920x1200. Most people who could help you will most likely ignore this thread. You should look for a thread directly related to your topic (troubleshooting failed display, backlight or inverter) or start a new one to get your query noticed.

Cheers,

Thanks, I know this isn't a general troubleshooting thread - it turns out that it was in fact a swap-related issue. The replacement panel I used had the inverter-backlight pink&white wires exiting from the bottom side of the panel rather than from the rear. This left the wires squeezed against the housing which eventually caused the insulation to fail and the backlight power leads to short out. This seemed consistent with the fact that the backlight would turn on for about 1-2 seconds and then shut itself off.

I expected that it was something related to my use of a "compatible" but nonidentical replacement panel, so I figured it would be something worth bringing into this thread.

Incidentally, to solve it I ended up grinding out a small depression in the housing with a dremel to give the wires some clearance, shimming the bottom edge of the LCD up about 1mm with PVC tape, and covering the aluminum with nonconductive tape to prevent the short. Works like a charm. I know there are a wide variety of replacement panels being used out there on both the 15 and 17" models, so this may be something for people to keep an eye on when choosing a panel.

I wonder if anyone has tried this with the new unibody MBPs.

And if the part numbers listed on here
http://www.hiresmacbook.com/wiki/index.php?title=15"_LCD_Macbook_Pro

are compatible.

The answers actually on the first line of the page you linked to.

"At present, there doesn't appear to be a compatible panel that will fit a Santa-Rosa MacBook Pro with the LED-lit display, so if your machine is too recent, at present, you're out of luck."

The screens listed are not LED backlit, and I don't believe a compatible WUXGA screen is available yet. Moreover it will probably be costly for some time after release, until it becomes more mainstream and refurbs/etc are available.

The mid-2007 rev had LED screens and Santa Rosa

The unibody MBPs are nvidia chipsets (not just the graphics), not santa rosa/centrino.

Spyder 3 Pro messed up my WUXGA C2D 2.33 install

Hi Everyone, have been happily using my modded LG WXUGA glossy 2.33 C2D MBP and then purchased spyder 3 pro and after install could not detect the device via USB and screen now is black; i can still output to external screen but my screen is no longer recognized after the system boots. Screen does light up at start so it's not a hardware issue. Still trying to figure out how to deal with this.
Will keep you posted.

I assume you tried the easy stuff like going to detect displays while connected to the external monitor and the lid open. Did you notice a flicker? Does the system act like it has two displays (activated mirroring) at that point or not even see the internal display at all?

Cheers,

Hi, with the outside monitor it acts as though the lcd panel is active but off. So i reconnected the old panel and did the sleep method and then the monitor came back on. Problem is the usb and bluetooth ports are not working, i installed bootcamp and there they work, so i know it's not a hardware issue. I don't know why this happened but i had the spyder 3 pro connected before i installed the software, maybe that messed up the install. I am having to reinstall Leopard in hopes of fixing the usb and bluetooth issues. I have been succesful at using spyder 3 pro on my 17" MBP and new unibody MB without problem. Just a word of caution to you all...maybe this was a fluke in my case

The unibody MBPs are nvidia chipsets (not just the graphics), not santa rosa/centrino.

But they are still LED backlit displays. And the lack of a WUXGA LED backlit panel is whats preventing you from doing this mod. Not the chipset.

As I said before thats actually explained in the article you linked to. I imagine the reason the chipset is mentioned is to give a clearer indication of the revision after which the mod is not possible. Since then the chipset has been updated, but the key point is they are still LED backlit and no suitable replacement panel is available.

I haven't tried XP, but believe it will give the same result.

Powerstrip won't affect OSX, my leopard installation still works fine.

Is there a Powerstrip-like utility to get OS X wkg again? The display stopped working in OS X. Works fine in Vista with or w/o external display but OS X only works with the lid closed on an external display. The internal screen will boot the Apple symbol or let me select what drive to boot from but selecting OS X gives me a blank gray or gray mottled screen. Is there a Powerstrip equivalent for OS X that will work or do I need to dismantle the whole think and do the sleep method?

Cheers,

Theres DisplayConfigX. I haven't used it myself, but I believe it will do refresh rates/resolutions. Not sure if its free though.

However, from the description of the symptoms, I'm not sure OSX powerstrip type utility will solve the problem.

Yes, I too am concerned the screen doesn't look like a sync issue.

I also saw a couple of things that said this has happened switching between bootcamp and OS X on regular systems but not good answer as to how to get it working.

Any other thoughts as to troubleshooting this issue? I am really hoping to not need to take this apart and do the old display/sleep method.

I tend to use bootcamp alot and haven't had an issue so far (fingers crossed :)).

Unfotunately the options are limited. PRAM resets seemed to be frowned on recently, but since yours isn't working anyway it may be an option.

You may want to try switchresx, which I think is freeware.

Other then that I think you'll just be chasing your tail, and it may be more economical to just open the machine. Should it be a recurring problem, then ofcourse it would merit more investigation, as opening your machine all the time would not be viable.

I'll let you know if anything else pops into my mind.

EDID for LP154WU1 A1 panel ?

Hello to all,
I have made the mod on my MBP 2.33 but have encountered problems with the optimal resolution. While tinkering, I reset the PRAM and lost the display (which I had woke up with the sleep trick upon install), now I am trying to use ATIinject but am not able to put in the right EDID value for my panel. The model I have is the LP154WU1 A1. Does anybody have the value available for sharing? I don't want to install windoze just to use moninfo or some other utility. Many thanks in advance!
Regards.

I don't know the setting but have now lost my display as well. Won't recognize it at all w/o using the sleep method and every reboot loses it again. I'm about to go back to the old display.

Well I opened it up again and did the sleep trick and it went back on. Have done several reboot and shutdowns and it seems ok. I have calibrated for color and it looks really good. I guess for me the moral of the story is avoid PRAM reset at all cost, else will have to open it up and do the sleep trick.
Cheers to all and thanks for this thread!

Guys, I don't think you should need the 'sleep method'. I don't.

Try my steps in the previous posts:

and 1102 above.

This works for me with the Samsung display.

I carefully read your post and before doing the sleep trick again, I installed Atiinject but it was no use for me (I have the LGPhilips display). I repaired permission and the whole lot....

I have a few questions. Did you edit the info.plist of Atiinject and copy and paste your display EDID value?
Which version of Atiinject did you use?
I agree this method is more convenient and would like to get it working but for me it just did not work. Maybe I omitted some steps or I am missing something.

Are you sure Atiinject is all you need? Maybe you have some other kext from the hackintosh projects installed on your machine?

Thanks.

No other mods and I didn't edit the EDID. It's just the same file that Thomas(?) posted a while back. Unfortunately I think it only works with the Samsung displays as-is.
