buy one used for $600, or something. Great, but overpriced by about $200.

Returned mine yesterday. $950 after tax with AppleCare was just too much for me to justify for their base model. It was great for reading and annotating PDFs, and the speakers were great, but I can't use it for the things I want to use it for. I took it flying with me on Saturday when I went up (I fly Cessnas recreationally) and it got in the way of control movement, so I couldn't safely use it for certain phases of flight where I might need that additional control deflection.

Oh, and it had the charging issue where it would shut off after it reached 100% charge. Apple's support couldn't fix it and I didn't want to deal with getting a replacement since I didn't 100% like the device anyway.

I deeply regret trading in my iPad Air 2, since they gave me $225 for it and would have gladly taken it back. I'm probably going to wait until the iPad Air 3 and/or iPad Mini 5 have been released - and hopefully with Pencil support - so I can get another one.

Wow, so many have returned their pro. Maybe the second generation will be a better fit for most of us? Anyone regret their return? It's nice to see a big chunk of cash being returned. I've never really returned a product at Apple before, this is my first time. I think my expectations were too high because I decided to opt out of the Macbook. I'm still looking at the Macbook.

I have been using my IPP for several weeks now, but will sadly be returning it this weekend. I have been using it in the same manner as I have used my iPad Air. As much as I love the IPP, my hands and wrists are so fatigued from holding and manipulating the device. I did not think the size and weight would be a problem for my arthritis, but it is. Other than that, the IPP is truly an awesome consumption device.

The 12" macbook is great. Unless you're doing something very intensive with it, even the base model is smooth with day to day tasks (at least for me). And I actually began liking the keyboard after a few days..it felt tight, while the traditional keys began to feel like marshmallows.

I don't regret the return. The pencil is still amazing, and it was nice for couch surfing..but I want more than that for the money.

I'm actually looking to find a cheap Surface 3 now.

I wanted something to write music on, and then be able to send it to my macbook.

iOS seems to be a long ways from that - while the surface line has Staffpad, and actually does it right now.

i ended up returning mine too. Used it for 2 weeks. I run a small tech business with a few employees. While the iPad Pro worked well, and did everything i needed it to (ssh sessions, onedrive, office, hipchat, etc), i was constantly needing to find workarounds to do the things I needed to do.

For example, uploading an SQL backup and importing it via phpmyadmin was a PITA, website uploads rarely worked. Downloading a zip, having to copy it to onedrive, then getting another app to open it, back and forth.

Things like that basically made me return it. It could do everything I asked from it, but my workflow is just much faster on a laptop right now. Maybe in 2-3 generations this kind of stuff will be better.

I returned the first iPad pro that I purchased a few weeks ago. Now using a company issued iPad pro from work and haven't really used it that much to be honest except as a second screen. Considering having my IT department switch this for an iPad Air 2 or surface pro 4. Will give it another week...

Returned it after a few days and then missed it enough to go buy another.

I'm impressed you went out an replaced another one! I finally had a chance to spend some quality work time with mine, as opposed to simply using it for entertainment. I'm in a job where I need to have a device out of my office on a seasonally. Well this is the season, and I'm finding it working into my workflow quite easily. I'm also enjoying the keyboard tactile feel more than I thought I would.

Let me contrast this to having recently given up my 12" rMB to my kid. I do miss it, but I've completely adapted to the new form factor of the iPP, and not having full OSX functionality. Is it a laptop replacement, no. Can I totally get into using the iPP for work, yes! Man, it is faster than my iPad Air 2 as I whip into different apps. The large form factor of the iPP does not seem so gigantic now that I've spends more time using it. Wish list. Well I wish the Apple covers/keyboard/back came in different colors. The iPP in full regalia looks a little boring.

Well i have decided to keep mine. There are a lot of things I like about it. I really wanted a galaxy tablet with S pen, but disappointed that Samsung hasn't come up with a new one yet. I will wait for my pencil. In the meantime, I'm enjoying it more. Still not enjoying how much it cost but that's over and done.
As usual when something better comes along I'll sell it and move on.

I'm happy that I bought another iPad Pro after returning it the first time. I love it's big screen and I did sometimes wish that my iPad Air 2 was bigger. There is still an awkwardness to carrying it places. I take mine to work each day and I will be taking it away this weekend. What id like is an iPad Pro size carry bag with shoulder strap.
I will get a pencil eventually, but I'm not in a hurry. I would use the pencil mostly for note taking in meetings, but my daughters can draw well & I would like to see what they could do with it. My primary used for the iPad are for without a pencil & it's awesome as just a big iPad too.
I think that my buying strategy will change though due to its high price tag. I paid $1699 for just the iPad in Australia, for the cellular model. So my plan is to not upgrade it every year like I was, but to keep the Pro for longer. Maybe skipping one or two models with each upgrade.

Yeah this is where I have such mixed feelings about the device. I LOVE the bigger screen - everything on iOS is such a pleasure to use with the extra screen real estate. It's like the perfect size for readability and viewing a lot of content at once. I basically have slide over active all the time in some capacity because there's so much space left and split view is also excellent if you want to use apps side by side. And the speakers are a really nice feature too that I initially wrote off as a gimmick, but it really does make a difference.

But the size also makes it feel less like an iPad and more like a laptop. What I love about the Air is how it is so light weight and just fits anywhere. The size also makes it feel less delicate. It's basically as easy to take out of the house as your phone. The Pro is so big but so thin it feels like you could just snap it in half. I do feel like once I get a case I'll feel more comfortable taking the Pro out and about. I really miss the old leather smart cases for the iPad Air, so I ordered a cheap knock-off from Moko. I doubt it will feel as nice, but hopefully I won't feel the need to treat the iPad so delicately anymore. I already have one small scratch on the backside.

I'm keeping the Pro because it's so nice to use, and it's the only iPad that supports Pencil, but in a year when iPad Air 3 comes out, and if that supports the Pencil, I'm not entirely sure I won't replace the Pro or at least consign it to home use only.

I agree with what you are saying. I also love split view on the iPad Pro, although I am hoping for a software update from Apple that will make selection of apps easier, perhaps smaller icons and folders in the split screen view....and even allow for 2 app preferences so we can select the two apps to use side by side in one go.

I have a MacBook Pro at home and it pretty much stays on my desk. I'm not planning on a Mac upgrade for a few more years, but I do think that my next Mac upgrade might be to an iMac, 27", since the iPad has become my portable computer. It doesn't replace my computer, but I think it will negate the need for a laptop for myself.

I forked out the $ for the Apple silicone case and cover. They are expensive, but I love them. I feel that they protect the iPad Pro really well and I don't feel that it is at all fragile. I also liked the Apple leather cases, but I like the two part solution better actually since I can remove the cover if I want to use the iPad in my hands, while still keeping the back protected.

So far, I have taken the iPad Pro to work with me every day.....and it's fine for this purpose. However, I used to take my Air 2 everywhere with me, even to friends places or when I went out for the day. I don't feel like I can do that with the Pro......so I have decided to keep a smaller iPad as well and have been debating whether to keep my iPad Air 2 or get an iPad mini 4. I'm leaning towards keeping the Air 2 since it now feels smaller anyway after using the iPad Pro. So, I still have my iPad Air 2 at the moment for portability. I'm planning on holding onto the iPad Pro for 3+ years, so it might eventually be my at home only iPad while I keep upgrading my iPad Air more often....we shall see.

So I returned mine Monday night and ended up exchanging it for a Surface Pro 4. Ultimately, I've come to two conclusions after using the SP4 for a few days:

1) I haven't used Windows in a long time, and I had never used Windows 10 until I got this thing...and now I remember why. What a mess. At first I kind of thought it was cool, but after a few days I found it to be pretty buggy. I do understand that Windows 10 is fairly new, as is the SP4, but my god after all this time they can't even get it to sleep right and the battery drains when you're doing nothing. By contrast, my rMBP has been sitting on my computer desk for three days, unplugged, and it had 94% battery when I opened it up about thirty minutes ago.

Apple offers the best, most optimized experience in my opinion. And god forbid Apple ever try to make OS X into a hybrid like W10; it is just a lackluster experience IMO. I'm glad I tried it out because now I know for sure that it's not for me.

2) I don't think I'll be buying another iPP. I was sitting here wondering tonight if I could exchange my SP4 for an iPad Pro again, and then I picked up my iPad Air 2 and started playing with it and remarked to my wife how light it was. I also have been using my rMBP again after giving it some time off for the iPP and SP4 and, now that I'm using it again, I just don't think that the iPP can truly replicate the laptop experience for me.

Maybe when the second gen iPP comes out I'll give it another look, but for now after checking out the grass on the other side, it looks pretty green where I'm standing. ;)

What made you return it? Something was driving some level of buyers remorse and what changed to cause you to re-buy the iPad?

That's pretty much what I went through. Ended up returning both for much the same reasons. The ipad air I have is fine for what I use an ipad for. The MBP is a great laptop that made using a Surface kinda painful. The only thing I'm trying to decide on now is either a 4k monitor for my pc (which means a new graphic card upgrade as well) or just getting a 5k imac. Either way, I just want something to view/edit 4k.

I haven't bought a SP4, but that was my reaction with the Pro 2 and 3 which I bought and returned to ultimately wait for the rumored iPad Pro + stylus. So many little annoyances that just kill the experience. It's fine on a desktop with a 23"+ monitor, but on a mobile device with a 13" screen I just couldn't deal with wake from sleep bugs, terrible display scaling, heat and throttling issues, and marginal stylus performance. It's certainly a capable device, but I didn't need those capabilities and the user experience was poor compared to an iPad.

It seems to me you could categorize the "return" reasons into 2 categories:
  • Expected to replace a laptop workflow but not sufficiently capable.
  • Ergonomically difficult to use
I agree with people who return them for these reasons. I could never replace my MacBook with an iPad Pro. In addition, I own all 3 iPad form factors (Mini 4, Air 2, Pro) - I would say that the Air 2 is easily the best balance between ergonomics and screen size.

Still, both categories are likely to improve over time. I'd recommend people considering the iPad Pro try it out in the Apple Store for ergonomics, and also make sure that there are apps that support their workflow before considering it. Otherwise, I'd recommend waiting for the next generation with better "Pro" App support.

For myself, the Pencil is the biggest reason I got it (apart from the typical Apple fanboy in me), and the screen is excellent for reading comics and magazines and watching movies. I see myself unlikely to use it handheld, and I think it is appropriate for simple web-based text input / note taking / drafting, but for a coding workflow (my profession) I have doubts.

I was close to returning it. It's very expensive and somewhat niche. But i've found a few uses for it that pretty much justify owning it.

It's a very nice item, regardless. Just overpriced by $200, even by Apple's standards, which is saying a lot :D

What were the few uses that made you justify owning it?

Astronomy apps for one (or any app really, that benefits greatly by the larger screen (there are plenty). And, i use this as a music stand in landscape. Now, the Air is fine in portrait, but I found I can have two pages open in landscape, which is actually a bit surprising. It's viewing ratio enables this, something a Surface can not do.

I would imagine this will apply to any number of books (with graphics). It's just a really useful device, simple as that..Just is $$$.

Of course holding it in your hand while doing something could be awkward, if that's you intended purpose, and an Air might be better. It's too big for 'casual' holding, although a doctor or similar would probably love it.

I comes down to hours a week usage, and that's going to take a few months. In a few months I will know if I want to keep it. Even with the extended return window, it probably will take longer.

These things are tricky this way. You don't want to return and buy again if you can avoid it, just because you get nervous about maybe scratching it, or getting in under the wire (or 'out' under the wire, in this case)

It depends on what you are using it, just as a larger iPad for $799?

Considering the price difference between the Mini and the larger IPad was always $100 if you used each the same way, ....

The prices now for the Air 2 and Mini 4 are very attractive, the Pro not so much. Buy one each of those, you spent less.

That handheld bit kinda takes away from that excellent reading experience. I may as well read everything on my 27" desktop if the device or screen has to be propped up or on a stand. As nice as the ipad pro's screen was, I didn't find myself reading a lot with it or watching media. It's more of a home device, and at home, there's better devices for all these tasks. Depends on what you have I suppose.

I think the Pro is all about the Pencil. If you aren't a note taker, artist, drawer, or someone who likes to use it, then it's not that worthwhile.

I think I could have been convinced (maybe) if the screen had higher resolution for 4k. By the time Apple releases such an ipad, I probably will have other devices that does that better too. But the Pro has other problems with 4k videos such as getting them on the device, off the device, crashes (reliability), pro quality apps, etc. See http://9to5mac.com/2015/11/24/ipad-pro-4k-video-editing/ for how much of a pain using an ipad can be for this. No idea if the new USB adapter recently released fixes this. But that's why I want a 5k imac.

Played with a Pro at Best Buy and was immediately fustrated by its contradictions; e.g. what good is the Pro's 4K-like screen when the Pro can only play Youtube videos at an unsharp 720p resolution? And what good is the Pro's extra large screen given that it exhibits a yellowish tint?

The SP4 did not last a week for me after trying it and returning it. For one, tablet mode was beyond pathetic.

My IPP will soon be a goner as I got an Air 2 cellular the other day at BB. I would not be doing Pro things so not worth $799 for just using it as a larger IPad and doing the same things. My artistic skills are limited to stickmen. :)
