okay , i have the iTouch 3rd generation and its taking hours to backup:mad: . is that going on with anybody else ?

Yes, unfortunately I think there are enough changes to force a complete wipe of the iPod, then a load-up of iOS4, THEN a re-load of all music, pictures, apps, etc...

It took me about 2 hours total.

then whats the point for updating a 2G itouch lol :(. lost my reason for updating my iTouch.

Persistent wifi and iBooks. Persistent wifi now enables you to lock your Touch and still receive text messages and IMs.

Problems

Tried to update my wifes ipod 2ndGen 8GB this afternoon.. but when it went to restore before loading the new software... it said it was verifying restore with apple. Then it just sat there with an error.. saying apple could not verif restore. I tried 3 times .. same result

what could be wrong??

Im updated to the newest Itunes

I have a solid internet connection

all cables look fine..

dunno

but after the reviews maybe I should think twice about updating it.

You can't have a background, or multitask on the 2G.

not if u jailbreak.the latest redsn0w enables this (if u want).

apple's server is prob bogged down with all the ppl trying to update

I updated my iPod Touch 2G 8GB to iOS 4. It feels slower than before, anyone else have this experience?

nope.i have a 2g and its just as fast for me.

I can't figure out how to use multitask. No matter which program I open if I double tap it just closes or nothing happens.

Is there something I'm missing?

I just realized that the 2G Touch's don't have wallpaper. That was the ONLY feature my 9 year old wanted. The suckiest part is that it wiped all his game data away during the update.

He is one sad little fella right now. I feel bad that I did the update now. :(

Just try zooming in any web page in Safari.

It's sooo much smoother. Feels like a much more powerful iPod.

I mean, is the wallpaper that important? Do you stare at the springboard for hours? Everything is snappier, not bad for a free update.

I used redsn0w beta 0.9.5b5 to jailbreak my iPod touch 2G. Now I have multitasking, and wallpapers. Pretty awesome, but half my jailbreak apps don't work. Oh well.

For many of these features, apple left out the fact that more than just multitasking would be missing. Only good thing is folders.

over an hour into the backup of my daughters 2gen, if I stop it now does that stop the upgrade? From reading here it doesn't sound like it is worth doing on a 2gen. and it is taking forever.

edit: stopped the backup and ejected the touch. went back and plugged it in and it came up fine and still os 3.1.3
from most of what I have read-glad I did. Good night.

heres my upgrade :mad:experience:mad: with ipod touch 2g:

-it took 2 HOURS to back up

-apps wouldn't load properly on the device

-after creating numerous folder in itunes when i went to sync it it deleted all the folders and i had to make them on the device

-feels very sluggish compared to ios 3

-ibooks takes 40 seconds to load and be functional (i.e. turning a page)

-very mad about not having wallpapers on the device (i could care less about multitasking although i do see how it could be a valuable feature)

-the only feature that matters to me was the folders and they serve there purpose although im mad about itunes syncing

I would just keep it going. It's still worth it, but some of the *better* features aren't there.

after the disapointing result of a disapointing experience in updating to ios 4, i'm really determined to jailbrake my device for the 1st time, when a compatible jailbrake is available (currenty is only to iphone 3g and ipod 2 nd gen except for MC models) i'll do it. I'll get all we wanted: background and multitasking. As gift, a bunch of other features, maybe also wi-fi on/off app on home screen or some bluetooth file transfer and wireless sync.
At this point, "voiding warranty" worths.
And how about overclock? imagine a itouch with liquid nitrogen cooling, hahahaha

I just updated my 2nd gen 32gb ipod touch to ios4. So far, only update for the 2g ipod touch are the folders and I can see the airplane mode in the settings. Not much else but the folders are great! I really like the folders. Was able to organize all my apps and my 10pages are now down to 4 pages of apps.

Took me almost 3 hours to update but it was worth it! So far had no problems with anything. It took almost 2 hours just to backup all my files.

I updated my 2G Touch and with a jailbreak multitasking and backgrounds are enabled. Not really any noticeable speed changes but the animation does lag a bit when returning to the home screen...

been running iOS4 with the developer release and then the official version.

upgrade took 30 mins max and have to say I think it's running nice. For it's age (Touch 2G) i'd say it handles well.

multi tasking would have been sweet but i've survived without it so not going to complain.

really wish i had an iphone now instead of my htc hd2....grrr!

go jailbreak your ipod if all you wanted was multitasking and backgrounds. Not too difficult for a solution thats been perfected over the past 2 years.

I'm on the fence on whether or not to upgrade. I'm on 3.1.3 and it works fine. No big deal about the multitasking as mine in mainly used for music. My concern is the speed. Can anyone confirm if 4.0 is faster or slower?
