To a 9 year old, yes.

Hey, try jailbreaking with redsn0w, there are guides on the web. You can add the background then, and although the icons animations are a little slower, it works fine over all. I've got multi-tasking on my 2G iPod Touch using this tool, too.

You can get winterboard. :)

Upgrade went fine on my 2nd gen. 8g, but I don't see any differences. Aren't we suppose to be able to create folders of apps ? If so, how ?

Thanks in advance ;)

I thought that you couldn't upgrade the 8gig Touch?

Never mind, my machine just updated to iTunes 9.2 and now shows that I can update my 3rd gen, 8gig Touch. :)

i liked the OS4 but unfortunately it wouldnt interface with my car's ipod uPAC control module. well, i would have had to buy another piece of hardware to get it to be compatible. I reverted back. i had the 2nd gen anyway. most of the cool upgrades didnt even happen on this device.

I'm on the fence on whether or not to upgrade. I'm on 3.1.3 and it works fine. No big deal about the multitasking as mine in mainly used for music. My concern is the speed. Can anyone confirm if 4.0 is faster or slower?

This is what concerns me for the most part.

Im going to keep my 3.x OS for now (although will be missing the iBooks for pdfs and books)
but when newer apps and updates start asking me for iOS4 it's gonna be HELL if the ipod suddenly goes slow and buggy....

i think i'll hold the update until they do some adjustments in .x revisions to address specific 2nd ipod issues....anyone agree in this course of action?!!?!?!

I've had iOS4 running on my 3rd gen, 8 gig Touch now for 24 hours and it runs just as fast as it always did and I can see no difference in wifi at all. If anything, it's better. I had iBooks on my iPad and definitely wanted it for my Touch. I spent a couple hours today at the local hospital reading a book while waiting on my wife visiting a friend. What is really nice is that the same books are allowed on both devices and I can now continue reading on the bigger iPad at home. If I bothered to sync both, it would even have my same bookmarks.

I'm always amazed at naysayers, especially those that haven't even tried it yet.

For all the people with battery problems: The answer is to restore but DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP. Restore and then sync. It fixes the battery problem, but you have to go through and reestablish all your app prefs.

I found this on another post, good luck!

NYTimes app crashes after iOS 4 on 2G 8GB

Since updating to iOS4, my NY Times app crashes every time after I read a story and then go back to the table of contents.
Clearly a bug fix is needed here. How come this kind of thing is not detected in the beta testing?:(

My NY Times was crashing a lot too... I just deleted it and re-downloaded and now it works fine.

Anybody notice shotty wifi after the update? I always have full connection at home, after the iOS 4 update I've had shotty wifi throughout my house. Nothing has changed to my airport and everything else works fine (360 and Macbook). Now I have one or two bars on the iPod wifi connection...

i'm really disappointed with this, that i found out after the update. So, if even this feature is not included, this firmware update ads nothing but iads to this **it.
also, scrooling looks to be crashing, is not smooth as before.

----edit---

also, i've just noticed now, but, anyone ele feels that the ipod button on the dock looks low-resolution?

iAds aren't actually the only thing added. Your mail was improved, you can make folders, you can make playlists, and now spell checking is incorporated into the native apps. For me, folders is enough to upgrade. And after a day of rigorous personal testing, my whole device seems to be running smoother. You obviously don't see this though.

Why don't you go jailbreak and brick your device.

I was following another post where a guy went to the Genius bar and they said that you should restore without backing it up.

Warning Don't install iOS4 on iPod Touch G2

Three words: DONT DO IT! The new features aren't worth it. It kills your battery and is not ready for prime time. I installed it on two different Touches and it's flakey at best. I had to waste time downgrading to 3.1.2 since Apple prevents you from going back to 3.1.3! Thanx Apple! Really appreciate it. I like the adding insult to injury technique for building customer loyalty.

absolutely correct. iOS 4 on an iPod Touch 2G is very slow! If you still have 3.1.3 I would keep it, as Apple will not even let us iPT 2G folks downgrade even though performance is terrible in many apps!

quite pissed at Apple about this...4.1, or 4.0.1 better have some fixes for the poor performance on a device they say is supported!

There seem to be very different experiences. My 2G Touch is definitely sluggish after the upgrade, and it crashes regularly - Safari in particular. The home screen is so sluggish that the whizzing icons animation often doesn't happen because it stops updating the screen. The new features just about make it worthwhile, as will apps using the new iSO 4 features, but I hope there's an update soon.
