This thread is so full of hatred!

:)
Nothing wrong with someone expressing their disappointment with this software upgrade. Those of us with a 2G Touch want to know what others are experiencing with the new software. iOS 4 works great on my iPhone 4 but looks like it's not working as well on a 2G Touch so I'll wait to upgrade the software on mine.

Just saying; hatred at iOS4 and Apple.

It's buggy and slow and the battery life is much worse, but there's a few things that are worth it. Namely, folders (I have everything in just one screen instead of ten), the new look for albums, and the playlist maker thing. Screen rotation lock would be good.
If I were you I'd wait for the update that is supposed to fix this update.

I believe battery life decrease is due to a new feature. The wifi will stay on while the iPod is in sleep mode (more than just at the interval set to check mail) to receive push notifications.

I just turn wifi off when I don't need it, and I haven't noticed any worse battery life. Mine is even jailbroken, so I do multitasking and have a custom background.

It is slow sometimes, but I assumed that is from the jailbreak running multitasking and backgrounds.

I originally heard that 2nd gen wasn't upgradeable to iOS4. Some people have done it, some haven't. Since iOS4 uses so much space, I would think the less gigs you have, the slower it's going to make the iTouch. Makes logical sense, right? I have less than a gig available on the 2nd gen, so I'm not going to upgrade. The people I know that did upgrade successfully, had at least 4gb free space. I tried it, but iTunes got stuck on "Backing up", so I gave up. I let my son play w/ the 8gb, I have my 32gb 3rd gen.

I dont think it's not upgradeable unless something changed. Not really, use of storage doesn't make devices slower... does it?

I have a 2g Touch 8gb and immediately after updating to iOS 4 it froze. I searched the internet for days to find a way to fix it but nothing worked. I could re-charge it ok and iTunes could see it but it was stuck in a sort of restore/ unknown error loop. This week I sent it back to Apple to fix or replace.

Fee?

In Apples letter they say
Problem Description: System-wide Issues - Frozen - Apple Logo

Our initial diagnosis indicates that because your product replacement will likely be covered by the warranty, an AppleCare Protection Plan, or another Apple repair program, there should be no charge to you.

multitasking works pretty well on a JB 2g

are you sure about that? ipod touch 2G has only 128MB memory. when it does multitasking, at some point, apps run very slower, and froze too. so you have constantly to clear memory by using free memory pro, or memory swap. but that's not enough. overall performance is not really what I expected. it is slower than 3.1.3. I don't agree with you. it's not running great. my iphone 3Gs seems to run fair though.

Ok, just wondering.

It doesn't seem like I'd get very much by updating a 2nd gen touch. Did anyone do it? Curious to see what new features we would get exactly.

I upgraded to iOS 4 but now my iPod seems to run a little slower, maps wont display my current location(registered with skyhook wireless), no backgrounds, no multitasking, and the battery doesn't last too long(might be because of persistent WiFi)

I might decide to downgrade to 3.1.3.

There are two solutions that might work: doing a full restore (you'll lose all your saves and such), or turning off push notifications. You should probably try turning off push notification first though.

Wish I never upgraded

Everything is slow now. I used to have no lag at all and now it takes 15 sec (timed) just to open 'settings'.

I've got it in airplane mode and with wifi off but it seems to inconsistently take forever to open up apps. I did the complete restore (not from back up) and reloaded everything. Not better.

This has been a big dissappointment. If the chip can't handle it then don't allow 2nd generation iPod Touch to upgrade to it. Hopefully there will be a patch - or at least the opportunity to downgrade the OS.

I did. That didn't help. But then I noticed that my Wi-Fi was greyed out and unavailable for some reason. I couldn't turn it on or off.

I did a soft reset and the Wi-Fi reappeared. It's running a lot faster now - but still not as fast as before the new OS.

after setting up my iPod touch 2G as a new device and not using a backup, it is actually much faster. Works just about as fast as 3.1.3.

I need to retract my previous post on this thread...my Touch is now mostly all good.:)

So, you have AppleCare? I wonder what Apple would have said if you didn't.

I had to do full restore when I upgraded cuz of error 34 when I tried to sync. All playlists were gone and I couldn't add any manually. After the pain of full restore, I could add playlists again, but always got message that my iPod was interrupted ... and did I want to cancel, delete back-up or continue? I always chose cancel and thought I could deal w that since everything else was great (no wifi probs or battery issues). Then yesterday error 34 again and all playlists gone; this time I could add new ones. I have Time Machine now, but don't know where to look for playlists file. I'd appreciate any assistance in locating them.
