iAds aren't actually the only thing added. Your mail was improved, you can make folders, you can make playlists, and now spell checking is incorporated into the native apps. For me, folders is enough to upgrade. And after a day of rigorous personal testing, my whole device seems to be running smoother. You obviously don't see this though.

Why don't you go jailbreak and brick your device.

actually, i've already tried, both things, brick and jailbreak it, unfortunatly, none worked ; )

how many people have been complaining about iOS4 making their ipod touch 2nd touch slower...

I kinda hate the way they give you something (folders, ibooks, etc) but ruin a bit of the functionality of the ipod, in general making your ipod user experience diminished...all i can think of now is to buy an upgrade soon, depending on whether the new ipod comes with a super cool camera and facetime, if not. blah!!! i'll wait for ipod touch 5! :p

You can downgrade to 3.1.2 http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/, the 3.1.3 firmware file is corrupted.

See my sig.

Is there absolutely NO way to go back to 3.1.3? I have an iPod Touch 2G. I am kicking myself to not sticking with 3.1.3. My iPod is SO much slower since "upgrading" to os 4.0. This sucks.

After reading all 5 pages, I decided NOT to upgrade my Ipod Touch 2G 8Gb to iOS4. Firmware 3.1.2 works fine, I use my iPod mainly as videoplayer (while driving in bus to work), somethimes when my son uses PC I use it as internet browser and somethimes he plays games on iPod..... and that's it.

I restored back to 3.1.2. How do I jailbreak now? I tried using blackra1n and I keep getting errors with the program itself and needing to close.

EDIT: Nevermind. Got it to work! :)

I wish I had come here before I upgraded!

You can still downgrade...

so far I haven't been able to downgrade. I've got a 2g updated to 4.0 and it's almost unusable in my car.

Tried the 2.2.1 and 3.1.2 firmware downgrades from the felixbruns site, and it wouldn't work. Either I got error 20 on 2.2.1 and 3.1.2 said it was unauthorized. My ipod is not jailbroken and I didn't save the signature files before I upgraded.

is there a way to go back still???? Please point me in the right direction, as I hate to throw this thing but getting close.....

Thanks,

Mark

Hmmmm... Thats odd. A restore in DFU mode might help but you would still be in iOS4.

I was able to get it going again in os4 after the various error messages, but nothing works going down in versions. Between Safari 5 crashing all the time, and now this, losing faith in Apple big time. Both upgrades that prevent going backwards...this is much too much like the windows world

Ipod is now restoring after trying the process in DFU mode. It appears to be showing 2.2.1! It even gave a notice that some of my app's are incompatible with my version of OS, so encouraging. It'll probably take another hour or so before everything is synced and I can start rebuilding the thing, but if it works in my car again, all will be well.

For others trying this, my touch is 2g, mb model 32gb. Not jailbroken, updated from 2.2.1 straight to 4.0. I didn't get copies of the files needed for signatures etc so didn't think this could work, but for now.....

Cautiously optimistic thank you!

I am in the exact same situation.

Went from 2.2.1 to 4.0 and it not only negatively affected my ipod, but now my iHome radio is not supported.

I am trying to downgrade to 3.1.3, but not having much luck.

I was seriously considering an iPad, but that is not going to happen now.

It will be a cold day before I buy another Apple product.

yeah...

i had an itouch 2nd gen 8 gig until i replaced it cuz it messed up.
so at the apple store they replaced it with an 8 gig itouch 3rd gen.
and i was rly hyped up abt multitasking and eerything i couldnt do on my 2g itouch,
only to realise that the 3rd gen 8 gig is pretty much the same,
therefore no multitasking, i was really dissapointed.

but it doesnt feel slower, and i like the new doc!!

:p

Come on guys, go ahead and upgrade it.

Yes, it's a little slower, and battery life a little shorter. But as a developer I want everyone to update to it so I can use UIGestureRecognizer in my apps ;-).

I'm holding off on upgrading my iPod Touch 2G, because I need to test iPhone apps against 3.1.3.

Be careful if you decide to upgrade. iTunes will not let you downgrade. It won't even let you go from 4.0.1 to 4.0. iTunes phones home to Apple to verify your iOS software image before it will install it, and if Apple has deemed that they don't want you to install something, you won't be able to.

I couldn't get mine to go from 4.0 to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 but thinking that's because I'd never purchased those updates. I went 2.2.1 straight to 4.0.

Now that I've successfully downgraded back to 2.2.1, the touch works perfectly in my car again, which was my main objective. A few of the free apps no longer work as they require 3 or higher, but I'm not touching this thing. Still pissed about the time wasted, but at least I have my tunes again on the road :D
