After trying ALL NIGHT at Apple.com, I drove to Best Buy at 10:15am and was in and out in 10 minutes. Here are the details I gleaned:

1) They do NOT check for eligibility. You do give them your phone number, but I gathered that was just to call you for the preorder.

2) They do NOT know how much stock they will be receiving on the 24th. They didn't know whether they would get the white model or not, nor did they know how many black they would get.

3) They DID set up an appointment for me to pick it up. I was given the earlier time available (10am) but he said they would call me if the store opens early (which is a possibility, he said, IF they work that out with AT&T).

4) They DO make you put $50 down in the form of a gift card. However, you ARE able to cancel the preorder at any time if you so desire and get your money back on the gift card.

So really, you have NOTHING to lose by preordering with Best Buy. You can continue to try preordering through Apple for added security since BB doesn't know stock levels yet. And if you ARE able to get a preorder to go through, you can then cancel the BB preorder. I'm just going to stick with BB and take my chances, since I'm one of the first at my store and have an early appointment.

I thought about going ahead and preordering the white, but I think it's pretty clear there probably won't be any on launch day, so I went with 32GB black instead.

Yeah, you have an iPhone to lose. What if you do not end up with one, and then worse-case scenario, everywhere else is sold out. You do not get one for weeks.

You must not have read my entire post. I said you can continue to try preordering at Apple.com (or wherever else). For example, I have tried preordering all night at Apple.com without success, so at least this locks something in rather than NOTHING at all. It's a good backup source. ;-)

Just preordered my 32 gb white. We will see what happens. There were quite a few people at my BB, ordering a mix of black and white. I do know one thing, if white isn't available, there will be a lot of upset customers thanks to BB.

And there were multiple reports yesterday, CNET, etc saying BB was preparing for preorders today. There is nothing shady or anything about it, we've known for awhile preorders via BB would start today.

Got tired of Apple.com and I have heard too many conflicting things from AT&T so I went to Best Buy and put in my pre order. I am number 4 so I should be good. I don't anticipate any problems. No fuss, in and out.

Pre-ordered a 3GS last year from BB and the process was smooth. They set-up an appt for me and I had the iPhone at 1pm on release day. So I went back this year and pre-ordered 2 32GB black phones, can't wait for the 24th!

Well, so far Best Buy is looking like the best option right now...

Apple website just keeps having errors. I was finally able to get a 32gb in my shopping cart but then you are not allowed to have it shipped to a different address.... Some people have said that they are just editing the shipping info via their apple login after they get their pre-order confirmation, but thats not exactly a guarantee...

Just called my nearest Best Buy and they have only had one person come in to sign up for a pre-order sounds like a plan for me :)

I gave up trying to pre order online so I did it at Best Buy

I tried pre ordering online with Apple and through AT&T to no avail. I even went to my local AT&T store and there was a huge line going outside the store. There was a Best Buy down the street so I decided to give it a try. There was no line and the guy that took my order said I was the 14th person to pre order and will more than likely get my device on the 24th.

BTW the guy told me that they were told that Best Buy was getting white devices. I was like "yeah right!!!"

I am guessing that there were no people in line because like people have said on here (who have pre-ordered wit Best Buy), it is not guaranteed that you will get one.

this is true, before going into ATT Store I went into BB and the lonley sales guy told me that it is not guaranteed but I probably would get one on the 24th as only 3 people so far have reserved...

I preordered at BestBuy in less than 5 mins.

I got fed up with trying it on line, so I just drove to BestBuy. In and out in less than 5 mins. $50 gift card, 32GB Black pre-ordered. Pick-up on the 24th. They SAID they were selling white ones as well, but I did not argue. Anyways, really painless. 16 people in front of me. They will call and set-up an appointment.

That's because it's in a first come first serve basis. The earlier you pre order the better off you are. I doubt anyone preordering after today will get thier device on the 24th.

That's cool. But I really did not like the AT&T rep getting to my new iPhone before I got to it. I used the ship to house from Apple so I was the first one taking it out of the box.

There are a lot of threads about this already. They are pretty much lying. You are not guaranteed a phone still. You may or may not get one.

I did mine at ATT and delivery to home... but stopped into BB before ATT. The guy said its not guaranteed but he feels there will be no prob. Also i forgot to mention this sales guy said they are getting white on the 24th as well. someone is sending info out. true? probably not.

I plan on pre-ordering at Best Buy. Does the $50 deposit take off from the $200/$300 price?

I am a bit worried, though. If I don't pre-order today, I probably won't be able to until Friday. I pray that I will still be able to pre-order come Friday.

I pre-ordered mine from Best Buy today as well. She promised I would get my phone on the 24th. Only 16 in front of mine.

The $50 is a gift card and can be used at anytime from the second they activate it until whenever. You don't have to use it for the iphone.

I think the guy was speaking the truth. I spoke with Bestbuy mobile manager and I pre-ordered from him. He told me that they will carry iphone 4 in white. I was very skeptical, so I asked, "Is this guarantee on June 24th?" He said, "White ones will be very limited, but since you ordered today. You will most likely get either launch day or by the weekend."

He told me that he spoke with bestbuy cooperate and they confirmed that they will have one at launch. I think white ones are ready to be released by June 24th, but it will be extremely limited. Depending on the size of the store, it will be very limited. It looks like apple is planning on selling white iphones to people on first come and first serve basis. I mean, they were shown in demo floor at WWDC. (Live demo ones)

I pre-ordered from bestbuy as well this morning, but I got there by 12:00 o' clock. They were still taking pre-orders on all models. Bestbuy mobile manager told me these details.

1. You are right. They don't know how many they are going to carry.
2. White ones will be most likely available at launch or very close from the launch day. They just won't have a lot of them. I think apple has them as well, but they are very very low in supplies and they want to just sell them as first come first basis. Iphone 4 white will be very limited, period. I bet most of bestbuy will carry no more than 10 units of white ones.

3. I took my chances just like you did and I ordered 16GB white one. I looked at the iphone order list and I was around 15th in line and I came in almost noon! HEHE. Rep told me that most people pre-ordered black ones because they were so worried that they won't get it on launch day.

I paid 50 dollars for the gift card and I will get it on as soon as it comes. I know it's risky move, but you know what? It's better than doing it online.
