App store problems seem to be fixed, but I'm unable to log in to https://appleid.apple.com. Doing so gives me an "An unknown error has occurred." error message. I tried two different Apple IDs with multiple browsers, devices and ISPs.

Apple has had more outages now that Cook is in charge. Steve would approve of their new "it just doesn't work campaign. :/

I'm in the U.S.. and still getting this in the Updates tab of App Store:

I got in no problem on my iPad.

Still not working for me. I tried a third Apple ID on my iPhone using cell data and I'm still getting the "An unknown error has occurred." error message on login.

I had someone in my office try his account and he got the same error.

Raises questions about whether I want my cloud future tied to Apple...

What makes you think this won't happen with another top cloud provider? Apple has a very good reliability reputation. Today was a bad day of course, as long as it doesn't happen again, I'm sure they'll prove to be a great provider.

No one has 100% up time. In the years I've been using Apple products they don't seem any worse to me than anyone else in regards to system downtime. I have paid (business class) services from other companies including MS among others and they are down from time to time, too.

Now I'm waiting for the "this would have never happened if Steve was still around" argument.

It would have happened when He was around, and heads would have rolled. Physically. Literally. (Or they would have been harangued enough, they would have wished they were never born)

Actually, such a delay, including the patchy manner in which it comes back online (including a few who might have NEVER been adversely affected), is PRECISELY the nature of a DNS error. Once corrected, the change takes awhile to get updated in DNS records around the world (called "propagation"), and that simply happens at its own speed. The issue itself might have been fixed fairly quickly.

Actually the internets seem to be getting better at propagation. In the 'olde days', it could take days, but the last DNS tweak I did literally took hours. I was surprised. It happened before I expected it to, it was that fast.

App Store and iTunes Among Apple Services Experiencing Downtime [Fixed]

Storage still seems to be slightly messed up. iCloud drive and storage is working, but data for apps is showing up under the App's process name instead of their actual name and the App icon is missing.

So for example, the Documents 5 app by Readdle is showing up under Documents & Data as "CommonDocuments" with a blank icon. Some of the apps have very different names from their process names which makes it very difficult to figure out what's what in the Manage Storage area.

As I said, it would be back up and running in just a few hours. All that whining that some people did was unnecessary.....but typical of course. :p

I think the question was more about finding out if the problems was apples or the individual unit and not whining

Good point!

came on to ask for help with the "cannot connect to itunes store" and saw this, glad it wasnt just me

System Stat page shows all green! I'm awaiting Apple's follow up statement. Talk about embarrassing.
I had issues today like many of us, and I'm not picking nits with any of you. The first thing I did was check downdetector's web site, and it's not just Apple - below is just a few minutes ago... Both of my field office are down - phones and data.

Time to grab a brewsky...

When we do a mission critical task we use the buddy system to prevent stupid problems. Perhaps when doing DNS adjustments of any kind, which propagates worldwide almost instantly and resolves slowly, a buddy system is justified.

Rocketman

I used to work in the network side of the IT dept. for a large company and that is exactly what we did. We would build the config file for a router or switch and get several people to critique it before applying the change. People are going to make mistakes and due diligence needs to be exercised to minimize mistakes and their effects.

Seems like one important part in all of that is "minimize", since even with all kinds of precautions and checks the potential of an issue can never be fully eliminated.

That's right. After checking, double-checking, and getting other people to check the work; we usually didn't make the changes until after everyone went home. We then tested as well as possible so if errors slipped through we could mitigate before resumption of business.

appstore and itunes are back in germany. the outage lasted about ten hours. very, very unprofessional for a company that charges you real $$$$

Really pee'd off with this.

Had to sign after the 8.2 upgrade (why?) and was told I needed to generate an app-specific password. Of course, the appleID page is still not working.

This is why trusting all your work, photos and data to the iCloud is already showing to be a bad idea! Its certainly not "just working" for me.

I never store data online. That's suicide. No control over security, being reliant on someone else's service to access data when you need it, it's a disaster waiting to happen at the time when you need it most.
