I imagine that the billionth app was downloaded long before the countdown was over. The countdown was a great means to just have a shopping frenzy at a particular time.
So what? Does it really bother you so much? Jealous you didn't win?

According to the rules. none of the entries before the 1 billionth counted. "The winner shall be the person who downloads the billionth app, or the person who submits a non-purchase entry directly after the 999,999,999th app has been downloaded." Sorry to say but there was only one entry that counted

So is the winner the first person to download an app after the billionth download? Or is it a draw from the downloads before the billionth download? The rules contradict itself.

Lets look at them again shell we?

Sweepstakes. Sponsor is the sole judging organization whose decisions as to the operation of the Sweepstakes and the selection of the potential winner are final and binding in all matters related to the Promotion. The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app. The potential winner will be determined by the order of the entries received. In the event that more than one entrant would be a winner based on the simultaneous timing of entries, one entrant will be randomly selected from those entrants as the winner. Each entrant’s chances of winning are dependent upon the number of eligible entries received.

When does the One Trillionth App download contest start?

I just checked my apps folder in iTunes and see that I've downloaded 145 total apps over the past 10 months. Seems like a lot to me, but I'd many people here have A LOT more! :D:);):apple:

CUPERTINO, Calif., April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today announced that customers have downloaded one billion applications from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. Well, his parents have 5 years to spend that 10k of iTunes vouchers.

Lucky bastard

this sucks

The rules for the billionth app promotion were confusing. My co-worker and I were led to believe that anyone who purchases an app or fills out the form online has a chance to win the contest. With the contest now ended Apple claims that a 13-year old downloaded the billionth app and therefore has won the contest. The very circumstance in which he won by downloading the billionth app doesn't match with what the rules state.

-------
How to Enter. There are three ways to enter the Promotion:
• You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by downloading an app from the App Store.
• You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by downloading an app from the App Store using your iPhone or iPod touch.
• Non-purchase method: Go to www.apple.com/itunes/billion-app-countdown/entryform/, fully complete an online entry, including your name, complete mailing address (P.O. Boxes not acceptable), telephone number, and birth date. Once your online entry is complete, hit the “Submit” button to submit an entry. Entry via this method constitutes one (1) entry into the Promotion.

Timing. The Promotion shall run from 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 10, 2009 and ends with the downloading of the 1 billionth app (“Promotion Period”). For purposes of the Promotion, the downloading of the 1 billionth app is considered to be either the downloading of the 1 billionth app from iTunes or the receipt of the non-purchase entry after the download of the 999,999,999th app, whichever comes first. Only entries submitted in this time period will be accepted. Sponsor’s computer is the official time keeping device for this promotion.
--------

The rules clearly state anyone is entered when they download an app from the App Store within April 10th to the downloading of the billionth app. What that leads people to believe is ANYONE can win that entered within that time period. What the rules don't say is the person who downloads the billionth app wins - which is clearly the case with Connor Mulcahey who downloaded the billionth app and won. Also, if someone is allowed to enter the contest via the online form then how does that constitute an app downloaded? I entered the contest at least 20 times via the entry form therefore I did not download apps 20 times. So "technically" Connor didn't really download the billionth app since some of those before him only filled out the online form.

The Official Rules were extremely round about, and for the most part, redundant. Just focus on the only part that matters: point 5 "Sweekstakes". Everything else is fluff and is there to define what a legal billionth entry is.

Yet if you had taken the time to read the rules you would understand how the contest would be won. It was fair, don't worry.

Is this actually a true report?

How is it that people still don't get that this isn't a drawing?? It's the person who downloaded the billionth app. No drawing and not random.

Because not everyone reads EVERY SINGLE line of the rules. What those that thought differently read was that once the contest started every app download (up to 25 per day) was considered an ENTRY in the contest. Well, the typical meaning of ENTRY is that this would give you a chance to win. However, the count was moving so slowly that there is NO WAY that a download would have possibly counted as an "entry" during the first week or so of the contest. In fact, it was probably only about 1 hour or so where the count was close enough to 1,000,000,000 that anyone downloading had a chance.

IOW, lame.

Wow, you're bad at reading the rules.

Nope.

So... I guess that Apple, who said that up to 25 apps per day count as entries into the contest, are ignorant. Please research your side when arguing in the future. It's less embarrassing that way.

And once again, nope. :p

It would be nice if you were correct. However, the person that officially won is the person that downloaded the 1,000,000,000th app.

My attitude here is "Good for Apple, but what's it in it for the consumer?" The answer is not much. App Store/iPhone is a huge success, who cares? This was marketing/PR stunt, not important news. I don't really care how many Apps have been downloaded.

http://www.macneurotic.com

It is HUGE news if you own an iPhone. It means that the app market is more robust than that of ANY other smart phone and therefore we will continue to see the majority of developers and dollars spent developing apps for the device we own. That is absolutely a benefit to me as an iPhone owner.
