Gizmodo is not Engadget's sister site. The only connection they have is Peter Rojas created Gizmodo, then sold it to Gawker Media. Then Peter Rojas went and created Engadget for Weblogs INC, which was bought buy AOL. Now Peter Rojas is at GDGT with Ryan Block. TUAW is Engadget's sister site though.

My fault. I figured that when AOL bought Engadget, Gizmodo was a part of the deal. I've heard Ryan Block at times refer to it that way but lol. I never read Gizmodo but it would explain the Gawker ads.

My contract is up this summer and I'll def. be picking this one up.

Best feature of all...lost that polished chrome bezel! Always looked cheap.

It's thinner. That's cool.

Was hoping for a screen the size of the EVO coming out but oh well.

Better battery. Sweet.

Front facing camera: I'm sure it'll be cool the first two times I use it before never using it again.

Glad they changed the design. It's been three years people. It was time for something new.

has anyone thought that maybe since this is a prototype apple needs to have the lines there for quick access to the battery since they are still testing everything, but the final product will have the same non-user replaceable battery???

that makes sense.

This design leaves me conflicted. I told myself that I wouldn't want a new iphone unless it had a larger, higher resolution screen. Well, I got half of that, and Apple still has the best screen usability and browser experience. However, the EVO 4G has a wonderful screen (I've held and used an HD2), and I like Android (I actually have a nexus one right now). I don't care about the front-facing camera, although the flash is nice.

As for the design, I'm conflicted. I like the metal rim and the "gaps." However, the back is confusing. In one aspect, the design is attractive because it reflects the minimalism of the apple tv or the mac mini. In another, the design has a rigidity that has no concessions to ergonomics. The rounded edges that are concessions to ergonomics can also be beautiful, and I still prefer the first gen iPhone design the most. It seems that they are too scared of signal issues to go back to that (or perhaps they feel a regression is bad in principle). The HTC legend has proved you can go aluminum and have good signal quality.

Sure they would. Secret stuff gets lost at bars all the time.

As I just posted, the real devices would be the field right now for testing. And some would have camouflage silicon covers like this one did, to make it look like a 3GS.

Read here about the original model iPhone secret tests:

Again, there were 200 field testers for the original model. Those here who say production models would not be given out, are historically incorrect.

I could buy that - especially so close to launch. With the release predicted two months away, they will probably start production late May / early June which leaves little time for last minute testing.

Case Back Material

Not only does the new 4G case backing improve reception, but it will also bring multi-touch to the back of the phone. There was an Apple patent filed a while back relating to such technology. I think this will be implemented in the iPhone 4G...imagine forwarding or scrubbing through voicemail while the phone is up to your ear with gestures on the back...

Ive's Twitter post is a bit odd. If the iPhone was revealed and it was notan Apple-based leak, I don't think someone as high up as Ives would make a post like that. It's almost like a confirmation from Ives that the device is the upcoming iPhone.

Someone's getting fired.

I wonder who the poor sap is that lost that phone and if he/she bothered going to work the next day.

YAWNNNNNN

The same ol same ol from Apple.

If not for their fan boys that thing would have been history already.

While I own a 21 inch iMac, 24 inch iMac and a 15 inch MacBook Pro I just don't see the big deal about the iPhone, I have a Pam Pre Plus and it does more then the iPhone does. True multi-tasking not some contorted system Apple made up. I just could never take such a big step backwards in my phone to go to an iPhone.

How many years has this Apple design of the iPhone been around now? 4 going on 5? Boring!

This year marks the fourth iPhone, and this design is drastically different than any one ever released. Why the hell would they totally revamp the design of the best selling phone of all time?

A few thoughts.

  1. The lines are purely for prototyping and won't exist in final
  2. The design will likely change
  3. Why is there no roation lock like on the iPad. Seems odd?
  4. Does look Macbook and iPad like - Similarity there.
  5. Why are there no connect to iTunes screenshots? :D

I like the new design, I'm sure that it is still being tweaked though.

I like the sounds of a 16% larger battery.

Steve canceling the iphone 4g in 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1

I wish there was an iPhone 4G, but sadly neither AT&T nor Verizon have any plans to put up an LTE tower any time soon.

Ugh, looks like an Android phone. Don't bow down to the whiners Apple!

Right, hopefully they'll bow down to the market demand, which is simply put, better hardware in what was the best phone on the market.

Apple has to surpass, what Android/HTC/WebOS/Palm/etc. has been unleashing.

Okay so now we have the iPhone 4G.

Now where are the 4G networks ?

With Sprint.

Ugly as ish but still thinner than the 3GS.

I was betting they will make it as thin as the PodTouch while keeping the nice form factor. Now that thing is borderline disastrously designed.

But notice he has only 3 tweets - the latest from 3 days ago. Could easily be someone else posing as him.

Do you really think the real Ive would post such a public comment like that ?

That's the same thing as saying it is real and someone's in trouble.

This phone is either fake or a controlled leak by Apple. And knowing how the iPhone is up against real competition right now it could go either way.

I don't think the design aesthetic is that far off the mark from Apples Desktops, so not a large stretch. To my eyes neither the new nor the old design is spectacularly good nor spectacularly bad.

The specs mostly make sense except for the screen resolution. Not sure what they are basing this guess on. It would make no sense at all to double the screen resolution (quadruple the pixels), when the DPI is already high enough. I might believe 720x480, but 960x640? It is a complete waste at this size. With the same size screen, I actually expect resolution is exactly the same, the downsides outweigh minimal benefits of increasing resolution.

agree with 1 and 2, 4

3 - dont see that being a big issue

5 - interesting.

That's highly unethical from Giz, it's either astroturf of the highest order, or plain theft.

Or it's a hoax, but frankly with the amount of ad traffic they just got, I think they're past caring now.

Something does not add up here, first of all i do believe it is a genuine iPhone and i also believe its has the 4th gen hardware but there is no reason on earth for anyone other than jobs him self to have a final design prototype let alone be able to take it of site, just look at the iPad, absolutely no one was aloud near it before launch.

clearly what we have here is a hardware testing prototype, the design of it is some what irrelevant other than its internal space for components and button placement.

Apple are one of the most secretive companies in the world,no way would they let a final design product into the wild so early, this is nothing more than a hardware test unit, the design will bare no link to the final released product.

This actually is thinner than the current iPhone.... Read the article.

I have read the article thanks - and I have eyes, so I can see from the pics that it is marginally thinner. You also have eyes, so re-read my post and you will note I hoped it would be 'much thinner', as the iPod touch is.
