Shocked that there aren't already One Billion Replies to this thread :)

Some food for thought, all reasoned speculation:

-The number of people at Apple currently allowed to physically handle a close-to-production version of the new iPhone likely numbers <100. Lots of people work on it, not many likely get to hold the whole enchilada in their hands at this stage >2 months prior to release.

-Of those, the number allowed to remove one from the Apple campus is probably <10.

-These are extremely senior people at Apple obviously, and so undoubtedly appreciate the significance of what they're carrying. IOW, the chances of one of them truly forgetting it somewhere is basically nil.

All of which leads me to believe it's either a fake, or a plant on Apple's part.

Given everything I see, I think it's a plant on Apple's part.

My $.02

OK so gizmodo had it for 2 weeks how did engadget get it? And why were they stating it was found in a bar in two different places?

Don't think engadget ever had it - they just got hold of some pics - maybe by the person who supplied it to gizmodo. Maybe they gave the pics to a few sites and sought the best price for the actual unit and Giz coughed up the dollars

I would love to be a fly on the wall in SJ's office right about now. I bet he is throwing a freakin' fit right now.

Why? The iPad hype is gone, apple doesn't appear to have anything between now and WWDC coming out. They need something new to hype and the next product to be refreshed is the iPhone. This is free advertising of their products, which since at this point would be a prototype, may not even be the final product.

:confused:It just doesn't seem to be legit, look how smooth apple designs are. To make it square and boxy not smooth I don't like it at all. I like the 3GS body compared to this. Maybe its a rough body before they start smoothing out all the edges.

The wife and I have already decided to leave Sprint this year and go with the iPhone, despite AT&T's rep. Seeing the new design (if real) of the iPhone makes the decision that much easier. I love the new look, seams or no seams. I ain't buying the thing to show it off to people - I'm buying it for the quality and the OS.

Are you kidding? The front facing camera would be worth it alone.....That is "IF" it actually happens this time.....
I agree, I'll take two when this comes out. The things I want most in the next iPhone hardware.

1) Better battery life
2) Front facing camera
3) Higher resolution screen

There are a number of other software features I would want.

Those Gizmodo pics really sold me on the design. I just hope the seems are done away with in the final product. But I'm liking the overall design! And I'm super excited about the front facing camera!

Let see how everybody that said that if this is the real deal they are not getting this "Hideous" "Non-Apple design" phone!!

I call it as I see it and I see this phone is a step backward int he design and non-apple design. If this is the final version, apple failed in the design aspect for this phone.

This has all the hallmarks of an important legal case. I'm very interested to see how this plays out.

How do you figure? The person(s) who approached Gizmodo either presented themselves as individual(s) who could be reasonably believed to be Apple employees, or they didn't. If they didn't, Gizmodo bought property known to be stolen. I don't see it being much more than usual.

I agree 100%. Had this been real and Apple DID want it kept secret there would be no photos of it right now. Apple would have already served a C&D on Gizmodo.

Unless Apple wanted it out in the wild.

My guess is that it was from Apple HQ. Any person who had access to test this outside of Apple would not be sitting at a bar getting drunk and leaving the device there.

Sure they would. Secret stuff gets lost at bars all the time.

As I just posted, the real devices would be the field right now for testing. And some would have camouflage silicon covers like this one did, to make it look like a 3GS.

Read here about the original model iPhone secret tests:

For the actual testing, technicians frequented all the places where consumers go: office buildings, subway platforms, stairwells, elevators, crowded bars, sprawling suburban malls and congested city streets. They also showed up incognito at Apple and AT&T stores.

Again, there were 200 field testers for the original model. Those here who say production models would not be given out, are historically incorrect.

I thought about it. I'd bet he'd reply, since he's been so talkative. (I like new Steve!)

The email should go like this:

Steve,

Does Gizmodo actually have the new, magical, revolutionary iPhone?

Want to bet on what the one word answer would be?

Isn't is funny, a ship that leaks from the top.

if these are real images of the next iPhone, then wouldn't we see a cease and desist order from apple already? Maybe their lawyers are drafting something now. if apple doesn't send one, then i'm not 100% sure this is the new iPhone we'll see in June.
