I honestly have no problem with the design or anything, it just seems unlikely Apple didn't take it down if this is real. I'm sure a rep at HQ visits blog sites and this would have been taken down already. Don't get your hopes up, Apple is doing this on purpose.

"Let's give them an old prototype while we finish up on the real thing, this should keep them talking until our next leak"

Brilliant. :)

Could be a 3G-S prototype!

Why do people think this is a G4 iPhone. It could be a 3G-S prototype!

Was'nt there a report about a guy killing himself over a lost prototype iphone. Could this be it!!!

Timing, mircoSim, the fact that it was in the iPad pic. Need I go on?

If it is true, it is not bad. I had been complaining bout the size and thickness of my Iphone 3G but never thought Iphone will make a smaller one. Despite Iphone 3g is difficult to handle with one hand and fit in the front pocket, I was amazed with HD2 screen size. I hope iphone 4g will have better or similar quality of Iphone 3g. Why not dual flash??? Maybe that will be 2011 where they want you to buy again heehhe. Another thing .. how is the back glass resistant to drop???

I would imagine like the MagicMouse is ;)

I love apple products, i think they are one of the best designed out there. But as for this, IM sorry ut its ugly. Make me hope they have something better. But then again, apple makes us fall in love with all their products. lol

There is no reason to think that this will be the final design.

Gizmodo doesn't think that this is a prototype and they list several reasons behind their reasoning - one being that it had 4.0 firmware on it before it was wiped.

I think the seams are there on purpose to 'hint' at a replaceable battery, thus luring all the tech-heads that read these forums (without scaring away the average Joe who does NOT read these leaks)... Then in June the final product is released seamless-unibody and Boom! ...You're screwed! :D

Of course you can refrain from buying then but at that point they've already kept you from buying the competition and you've become so excited about it that you don't care anymore...

Is there anyone here than doesn't think it's OK to take possession of this item and tear it open. This doesn't belong to them, and it should have been returned. I'm sure Apple knew where it belonged. How about checking were it was first found. I can't believe that grown-ups are doing the finders keepers bit. Is it really impossible for us to wait for information that Apple is willing to share legitimately?

This is low-life to me...

... this must be a dummy case. Fingers crossed!

Read the article and look at the pictures dude, why would they disguise it in a black plastic 3G/3GS case if this wasn't the real thing?

500x_case1.jpg

one thing that is still bothering me is why no internal pictures ?

where are the close up's of the CPU ect,
i have only two thought on this

A: Apple found out they have the phone, spoke with giz and said you can to the external but no main board or we will get our leagteam involved

b: its a fake and Giz know tis and are milking it for all its worth before it get blown out.

either way Apple get Win Win

Lol at the people who are like "Someone is SOOOOO fireeedd!"

This was a delibrate leak I think... and here are my reasons...

A. its close to june when the expected 4th gen iphone will be announced.
B. The design is something apple dont normaly do, it looks (like allot of people are mentioning) un-apple ish... I believe that this design is a very early one and this has been leaked on purpose to get feedback from people like us.

So heres my feedback apple.

Like the front, like the back... but the sides suck. Look pretty lame and the volume buttons look pretty crap.

I would like to see a back that is simular to the ipad in other words... aluminium plez plez

If you think Apple intentionally leaked an early design to get feedback, you have not followed Apple at all the past 15 years.

There is no way Steve Jobs wants an unfinished design out there, NO WAY AT ALL!

He's an obssesive perfectionist, and keeps things super secret. I think there is 0% this is an intentional leak, especially if its unfinished. Why would Steve want the first view of his beautiful new iPhone to be of an incomplete model, it makes no sense. He loves showing it for the first time, in all its glory, at his events, and Apple has never released hardware early like this, never intentionally.

Wow, this looks real.
I don't believe the "found in a bar" story, but there are obvious reasons to fudge that (e.g., may have actually been stolen in a bar).

:) not as wide, thinner
:) front facing camera
:) bigger battery == longer life and/or more computational power
:) camera improvements: flash, lens, physical button maybe
:) screen resolution. I love that they can't see the pixels. The Giz article guesses 960x460, but I assume they meant 960x640 (resolution doubled in both directions)

 What's up with the seams? They seem ugly and just a way for crud to work its way into the phone. Guess it's worth it for a replacable battery.

 I'm hoping the back is glass/ceramic -- that is, something other than plastic.

I hope this new back isn't like the plastic on the 3G iPod (Touch Wheel) or the plastic found on the Magic Mouse ... because scratches like a B****

Agreed. Looks like I'm skipping this gen

Gee, should I buy based on form. Or function. Form or function. Form or....

I've got it. I think I'll buy based on what the phone can DO, not what it looks like. :)

More to the point, I think we should consider apple's strategies (tactics?) in trying to assess this "find". Consider the possibilities:

1) it's a real, lost 4G iPhone. Unlikely scenario, to be sure, but possible.

2) it's a fake. There're a lot of historical precedents, so possible.

3). It's real but an intentional leak by apple. Yes, apple's historically uber-secretive, but thats only because it's felt that strategy served its business interests. I wonder, how would "misplacing" this phone advance apple's business interests. To let buyers know whats coming months before the product is released, as a competitive move? Or maybe misdirection, to obscure what's really coming, for some reason? When a leak serves apple's interests more than secrecy, trust me, there will be a controlled leak. So this is a real possibility too.

I'd like to hear your thoughhts on the benefits of a controlled leak. Think creatively, even conspiratorially. Corporations do.

"We're bloody saved everybody, the iPhone's getting FLASH!!!"""

"Oh, for the.... Yes, of course.... So, we're all still pretty much fu...."

I agree. This phone looks like a Samsung from 4 years ago. This couldn't have possibly been a controlled leak. Why? To turn people off and have them make a premature decision and buy a different phone? Sure, it looks more "professional" looking, but Apple doesn't go for the professional look. They build sleek looking products, the ones that will sell millions to the 15-35 year-old crowd, not 40 year-old businessmen.

I've got it. I think I'll buy based on what the phone can DO, not what it looks like. :)

True for you, but not the masses. Most people just say "OMG, now I can check my Facebook all the time!" and buy it.

Why Havent They Turned It On?? Just Wondering!

Funny how the say its the New iPhone 4G and that they found it in some Bar in California, BUT, Why havent they turned it on? Why havent they shown pictures on the supposedly new iPhone 4G on? Until they do that, I believe its a fake, PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!!!:D

This has to be the greatest focus group study of all time. Drop a phone in a bar and wait for all the free feedback. We don't have to offer anyone any incentive to participate. Sweet!

If this were real we would be seeing a video of the software and the screen. Lets see it working people!!

Finally, a modern design!

The 3G design was getting so stale I could smell it from miles away.
I was going to get a Nexus one as my next phone, but this coupled with OS 4 has convinced me to stay with Apple.

+1

but i there aren't too many seems to worry about i think...i think its an attractive phone still. i could careless about replacing the battery. my original iphone hasn't needed its battery removed and my current 3g i got when it was released hasn't needed its battery removed either.

a other than plastic back case is a must.

The new design might look funky, but Apple will have no problems selling smartphones to people who can't read more than two paragraphs! :p

Let's make a poll.

The ones believing this is the real phone must promise to buy this one and this one only.
The others will be allowed to buy whatever comes out (either it's this one or something else).

Or don't buy it at all.

:)

Seriously: If it is thinner, if it is not rounded on the back, if the buttons are made of metal, it's all a step in the right direction. But the front-facing camera makes me shiver, the smaller SD-card means buying a new one and the design needs some time to get used to, it looks even bigger than before.

Again: IF this is the new one. I doubt it.

Wake me up when they release iPhone nano.
