I don't believe this "bar" story for a second. This has to be Apple wanting to get the info out there earlier than normal to counter the gaining momentum of their competitors, who are putting out new phones on a very regular basis.

I have to say this update seems like a small one. I feel almost no pull to upgrade from my 3GS.

Literally LOL.....

Why wouldn't you get a huge reward for contacting Apple and saying I have something you be interested in.

I know there would also be the possibility that they send in the black ops to tear up your apartment while you sleep and have you rubbed out. :)

What has the person in the bar gained from all this? Gizmodo the highest bidder? Buttons compared to what has cost Steve.

If you think Apple intentionally leaked an early design to get feedback, you have not followed Apple at all the past 15 years.

There is no way Steve Jobs wants an unfinished design out there, NO WAY AT ALL!

He's an obssesive perfectionist, and keeps things super secret. I think there is 0% this is an intentional leak, especially if its unfinished. Why would Steve want the first view of his beautiful new iPhone to be of an incomplete model, it makes no sense. He loves showing it for the first time, in all its glory, at his events, and Apple has never released hardware early like this, never intentionally.

Things change! Maybe they no longer want to be predictable?

Looks like an iPod Nano 1st Gen

KoolgiyBlackNano.JPG

first time poster here. :)

I had a nagging feeling it looked like something I had seen before....I realized it is the same form-factor as the 1st Gen iPod Nano, just bigger. The metallic-y looking buttons and back look similar.

So those who think it goes against the Apple design aesthetic are wrong. They're recycling a design from the past.

These leaks really sucks for Apple!

Well, the actual release is supposed to be in June - only couple month away. I doubt this is the final look we are going to see, plus no one still knows how it works as Apple apparently killed this device. It is not like it is entirely new product - we all knew new iPhone is going to have better camera, front facing camera, better screen etc. So in fact this leak is not a pure shocker.

I hope this isn't real. I like everything about it, but I was hoping for a 4.3" screen.

I'm most excited about the potential functionality of the phone. As seam here or there is not a big deal and by the time the phone comes out, who knows, the casing could be cleaned up a little more. Besides a lot of people put cases on their iPhones anyway.

Can't wait until June:D

Especially if both the front and back are made of glass... seems like a great way to sell cases, or more replacement iphones.

Touchscreen phones pose a particularly challenging design problem. With the entire face of the device a screen, there's not a lot you can do with it. It's a screen. And with space at an extreme premium, body curves and roundness are going to be a problem.

This would be the most logical reason for dropping the curvy design. There's no way they can fit all the features everyone wants (flash? larger battery? front-facing camera?) without making it bigger - thus the squarer design.

I'm not a fan of the seams though, but hopefully those will disappear for the final version.

Okay, someone explain the microSIM slot to me. What purpose does it serve? Doesn't the current iPhone have that slot? Why would we want to swap SIMS? Will the iPhone be unlocked?

just looking again definitely wont have a user replaceable battery as they have also added sim tray, would have been no point as they could have put that inside as well with out the need to the tray.

Every time there is a significantly new design for an existing Apple product, there is a bunch of hooplah over it. Because we're looking at blurry cell phone shots and secondhand reports than seeing it in person or with good detailed images.

I like having a new iPhone design, and I'm sure this one will look very nice when released.

I'm in your camp. At first glance I thought "What the...I hope this isn't real." But more I look at it, the more I think "I hope this is real." The original iPhone is still my favorite design, but the chrome band has become dated. This new design - if it's legitimate - has an elegant simplicity with a sense of real solidity, in keeping with Apple's design direction on the MacBook Pro, iMac and iPad.

I guess you could always go HTC's route on the Droid Incredible and try to make things interesting with some gratuitous detailing (like that terrible terraced back). I'm glad Apple is avoiding that path.

Design looks terrible, I think this is just a prototype and not the finished phone we'll get in June/July.

I love it. I have the 3gs and I think the design is un-apple. This new one looks more apple than the current. Looks more like the iMac and ipad than the current iPhone. I am convinced (possibly with a few tweaks) this will be it. Shame I'm tied in to my 3gs for 6 months past it release date. I might even consider buying out!

The time traveling paradox states that this is not possible. He would have killed himself before he lost the iPhone..

Looks like I might be half right! :D

A Chinese engineer committed suicide after he was allegedly roughed-up by company security services when one of the iPhone 4G prototypes entrusted into his care went missing.

Twenty-five-year-old Sun Danyong, a recent engineering graduate, was employed by Foxconn, manufacturer of Apple's iPhone and iPods. According to reports from China Radio International (Google translation), VentureBeat, and others, Sun leapt to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building on July 16th, a few days after the iPhone 4G prototype disappeared.

or like every new apple product, people will say what you're saying, then retract it when they have seen it in person. I'm gonna go with that since it happens every.damn.time.

...am I the only one who think this might be the Zune Phone?

It's using very similar lines, and even has the little screws on the bottom, like the ZuneHD has on the back.

Apparently all the components had "APPLE" stamped on them, and it says iPhone on the back of it (looking at the pictures), so I doubt it.

This kind of response is very familiar. A lot of the comments on this site about the switch from the original aluminum to the rounded black/white plastic were along the same lines.

The bar story is suspect, but maybe not insanely impossible. If anyone remembers the buildup to the launch of the 2G, it was spotted in the wild at a restaurant. The tester even showed it to a guy. This was when we learned about the magnifying glass cursor effect. That too was promptly shouted down as fake before the 2G came out.

I think this is real, but may not be finalized. As for the design I think it looks more "adult" and totally in line with their new products. I'd be happy to have one. I don't think we all need to go bonkers about the design. It's either real or it isn't. We'll find out in two months and have a good chuckle about this.

Also, how do you find someone's phone and go ahead and open it up like that when it clearly doesn't belong to you? :)

So every single person who has an iPhone NOW will need to go to the AT&T store to swap from a regular SIM to a "micro-SIM"?

Yeah, that's happening.

Looks a lot heavier than the old one.

Its only 3 grams heavier than 3G, according to Gizmodo. Compared to the oldest one it should be a lot lighter.

EDIT: Just discovered the 2G and 3Gs both have the same weight, 135 grams. The 3G is slightly ligther. Damn, I was sure the 2G was heavier because of the metal use. Oh well, then the iPhone 4 is the heaviest iPhone yet, haha -- but like I said, only about 3 grams so its hardly any different.
