Anyone who thinks this new iPhone is ugly may want to check out the new Droid Incredible for a little perspective:

*shudder*
My eyes, my eyes, they hurt real bad... :)

Personally I don't like it. Get rid of those seams and maybe, but the ceramic back looks tacky IMO - though maybe that's due to the poor quality images.

I'm also pretty pissed off that my current SIM won't be able to fit in. There goes the easy (read: no ****ing around with O2) upgrade. Damn.

Was Mr Ive on holiday when it was designed?

My guess is that they are using a temporary design (the article says it was disguised as an iPhone 3G) so that it won't draw attention in public. They are probably testing it in "in the wild" to test reception, field-worthiness, etc.

I'm sure the final product will be up to Ive's and Job's A+ standards.

If you think Apple intentionally leaked an early design to get feedback, you have not followed Apple at all the past 15 years.

There is no way Steve Jobs wants an unfinished design out there, NO WAY AT ALL!

He's an obssesive perfectionist, and keeps things super secret. I think there is 0% this is an intentional leak, especially if its unfinished. Why would Steve want the first view of his beautiful new iPhone to be of an incomplete model, it makes no sense. He loves showing it for the first time, in all its glory, at his events, and Apple has never released hardware early like this, never intentionally.

Your opinion I dont agree with it though I think what I have said is right and thats my opinion, i am neither right or wrong and the same goes for you.

And no I havnt spent the last 15 years of my life following apple. 1stly that would be 75% of my life wasted from a early age and secondly I dont follow anything.

oh one more thing, a perfectionist doesnt let anyone use a "none finished" version of anything in that case... I am a perfectionist with my art I do not let anyone see it before Its complete etc etc.

If Steve is the perfect perfectionist, he wouldnt trust anyone other than himself with a prototype to take outside of labs.

I just enjoy apple products and many other gadgets and products.

To the people that think it's ugly, you're either trolling or are blind or have some weird taste. The seams are weird, probably only because we could never picture it actually happening and don't have it infront of us to check out for ourselves, but the phone itself looks slick as hell overall and matches up with other mac products.

Hey, a better camera with a flash, now even more people can watch even more of concerts though their cell phone screens hoping to snap that perfect shot in the dark. Goody.

Ya, and the pictures will still look like this because a tiny cell phone flash has the range of about 3 feet tops. Meaning, it'll just be sucking your battery down like always.

A better design would be figuring out how to get a 128,000ISO sensor in there so you never need flash anyway, even in the dark.

Just sayin'

I don't believe this "bar" story for a second. This has to be Apple wanting to get the info out there earlier than normal to counter the gaining momentum of their competitors, who are putting out new phones on a very regular basis.

I have to say this update seems like a small one. I feel almost no pull to upgrade from my 3GS.

If Apple wanted to get info out there prior to release, they could have pre-announced the new iPhone like they did the original iPhone and iPad. Apple doesn't need to send someone to a bar to "drop" the phone hoping that it would be picked up by someone who knows what they're looking at and send it to the media. Come on!

Also, how can you judge whether you want to upgrade from your 3GS when the product and the actual specifications have not even been released yet? Sounds like you're getting a little ahead of yourself.

I'll definitely wait for this to upgrade my phone. Personally, I couldn't care less about what it looks like because it is a freaking iPhone and I'll be the coolest cat for having it anyway. ;)

I believe the case design is almost production ready, but I doubt there will be seams as all of Apple's mobile products are or have moved to non-user replaceable batteries. Why would Apple change this now, especially with a bigger battery in the phone?

I think this design, minus the seams is pretty slick and sleek. I hope to god this is the soon to be announced 4th gen iPhone.

It is legit. no one's getting fired because Steve has been doing these planned releases for some time now and the phone will be great. It's looking like it will be worthy of it's step up title.

Sorry, I stil don't believe it. If this really is the next gen iPhone then Apple lost their touch and we are all in serious trouble. That thing is disgusting looking!

There is no way Apple intends on releasing this device. This has to be a red herring.

This kind of response is very familiar. A lot of the comments on this site about the switch from the original aluminum to the rounded black/white plastic were along the same lines.

good reason to leak...

Apple would be wise to entice potential buyers now, since if customers purchase a competitors phone, they'll likely be out of the market for a year or more. By letting this info out now, it makes anyone teetering on the edge of buying a new smart phone to hold off and wait for the new iphone.

Wow. Point taken.

Looks like it must have a great camera, though, since they'll apparently transplant an entire human eyeball into each phone.

Gizmodo says the logic is board is much smaller, but does not mention the chips they found inside. CPU/GPU, cell transceiver, WiFi, GPS... I wonder what is new in that area. WiFi at 5GHz, there goes the clean spectrum at 5GHz :) ? Which company is supplying the cell phone transceiver and processor? Are they using iPad style custom CPU or off-the-shelf parts? etc. etc. If none of these details are available, it is quite possible Gizmodo is withholding that info to stay on Apple's good graces or maybe this leak was "intentional" on Apple's part anyways.

so some of you aren't upgrading from 3gs to this because you think it's ugly?
since when do people care about looks before functionality?
it's still an iphone, it's still just a giant touch screen.
most people use cases anyway, so you won't really be able to tell.

Haven't read all of the replies but...

...am I the only one who think this might be the Zune Phone?

It's using very similar lines, and even has the little screws on the bottom, like the ZuneHD has on the back.

The more I look at it, the more I like the design. Very sharp yet smooth, it also has that distinct Apple quality build and finish.

I'm in your camp. At first glance I thought "What the...I hope this isn't real." But more I look at it, the more I think "I hope this is real." The original iPhone is still my favorite design, but the chrome band has become dated. This new design - if it's legitimate - has an elegant simplicity with a sense of real solidity, in keeping with Apple's design direction on the MacBook Pro, iMac and iPad.

Touchscreen phones pose a particularly challenging design problem. With the entire face of the device a screen, there's not a lot you can do with it. It's a screen. And with space at an extreme premium, body curves and roundness are going to be a problem.

I guess you could always go HTC's route on the Droid Incredible and try to make things interesting with some gratuitous detailing (like that terrible terraced back). I'm glad Apple is avoiding that path.

For those who don't live in the area here's a quick map showing the area it was found and proximity to Cupertino. It's about 20 miles or 30 minutes away.

Felt like sharing some of my thoughts.

The more I look at it, the more I like the design. Very sharp yet smooth, it also has that distinct Apple quality build and finish. The only thing I would change in exterior design is probably make the aluminium side sit flush, and maybe make the home button a rounded square. This design looks inspired by Sony (some phones and MP3 players).

Also I am not sure if this phone is actually going to be ahead enough in technology, phones with 8MP cameras are becoming normal. Flash on a phone was standard 5 years ago. OLED screens are becoming standard etc. All this and Apple are only releasing in summer. I hope they are bringing some bigger surprises too... Otherwise the iPhone could just end up following the same route that the Macintosh computers are currently taking.

P.S Let's hope they have proper bluetooth!

The iPhone doesn't need to have the best and latest/greatest technology. It needs to just be "good enough" because the OS and app store will cinch the deal. And why on earth would I want an 8 MP camera on my phone? If I want to take high quality photos to print and frame, I will use my SLR. Do you know how long it takes to send an 8 MP photo via email or MMS? For the purpose of sending snaps to friends through your phone, 1 MP is more than enough.
